PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A third-grader stuck 19 schoolmates with her mother's diabetes blood-testing needle this week, and one pricked student tested positive for HIV on a preliminary test, officials said.

Health officials said the virus could not have been contracted from the needle stick, and they noted that preliminary tests can yield false positives. The risk to students who were stuck after the possibly infected child depends on factors including the depth of the stick, health officials said.

The 8-year-old stuck her Taylor Elementary schoolmates Wednesday at the school's breakfast, at lunch and in the classroom, using a needle that was about one-third of an inch long, on the end of a device that looks like a pen, school officials said. They were unsure why the girl did it.

She was suspended and will probably be moved to another school, said Paul Vallas, the school district's chief executive.

Most of the students involved were taken to a hospital for testing and treatment, school officials said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of HIV infection after a needle stick is low, with an average of one in 300 cases leading to infection.

right.
on the other hand ,you know, given her age, you can say: "she is only a child so she can't 100 % distinguish good and evil......"

but how about 14,15 etc year old teenagers who get sometimes totally mad? you would not expect such things from a teenager......

Did anyone consider the girl wasn't being violent? She sees her mother pricking herself with the needle all the time, so she doesn't think it's a bad thing. Perhaps she was just playing a game with it....if it took the teacher or anyone in authority that long to find out about it, most kids obviously weren't hurt by it or they would have told sooner...

ditto.

We've all done stupid things at times, even as adults. Just that usually the consequences aren't severe. This girl obviously didn't know about the risk of HIV infections so...

If you consider that adults often do terrible things, maybe we could be milder towards a 8 year old girl...

She's only 8 people stop acting like she is a serial killer. I think she needs to be punished harshly for this incident, but I don't believe she should be stoned. I hope the test for the HIV come back as a false positive. It would be a shame if this childish tirade was the cause of someone being infected.

And Bush is trying to take sex education out of the public schools. With incidents happening like this the kids need to be aware of the possible dangers of needles and having unprotected sex.

either year olds know the difference between good and bad, unless something is wrong with them mentally.

most kids HATE needles, so i'm sure she didn't think it was just a game.

however, it isn't entirely her fault. her mother should have had her needles locked up and should've explained to her why she had to use the needles.

It's scary what kids can do these days. I have a students that's on 7 medications, just to control his emotions. And i have another student that he just hates everything.

dont be naive

8 years is an age to know right between wrong

this girl obviously has other issues going on, but that doesnt excuse this behaviour
