View Full Version : Conchita crashes early

Martinez lost &-6 6-3 to Kristina Brandi in New Zealand. Obviously not a good start to 2002, but this could be REALLY bad because usually Conchi's year follows her early Aussie circuit results. She needs a real bounce back quickly

----and Selima Sfar has upset defending champ Meilin Tu 6-3 6-2. Come on and keep winning Selima, inshallah

With Anna K and Conchita Martinez on court, today was a sellout, with all 3,400 seats filled.

And then there was one. (Seed left in the top half.) If Anna gets by Amy, she has a nice shot at the finals.

I like the comment Selima made. She said she left Tunisia to train because literally there was no one for her to play against.

Happy New Year Sir Stewart

I wonder how the Tunisian public reacts to Selima.
I understand Tunisia is a moderate Islamic state, but does she get death threats from fundamentalists like that female runner from Algeria used to? I just hope she's appreciated in her homeland!

I imagine she is, even if it's not "officially" or publicly.

But here Selima has a real shot at the semis. Sfar, sgood.

I'd guess that she receives a lot of press. Tunisia is miles ahead of other Arab nations on women's rights.

Poor Celeste!

Jan 1st, 2002, 10:33 PM
You can blame my mum's friend. She was staying in the same Auckland Hotel as Conchita. It was breakfast time and she was approaching the buffet when this woman tried to barge in front of her. My mum's friend nudged her out of the way kind of elbowing her in the side to stop her pushing in and then looked up and realised she had pushed aside Conchita Martinez hehehe. So i dunno, maybe Conchita was bruised, hence why she lost.

(sob, acting devastated)....Poor me? LOL! Poor Conchita. Well, I can't get upset about it. If I got upset every time she lost I'd be in the nuthouse for the terminally depressed. She hasn't played in months, so I didn't expect great things.

If there's one thing I know about this crazy tennis system, it's one thing......Conchita will rise again!

Of course, Celeste. As always, you take your chin up to new heights, one advantage of Conhita's losing. We call it resilience, where I come from. We'll have to do something bout poor Conchita, though. Tell you what, lets get together some nights to exchange ideas..... assuming of course, you've kicked Randy out!

Jan 2nd, 2002, 01:46 AM
Randy? Who the f.uck is Randy? My husband is Ronnie! We have an "open" marriage, though he's been the only one who has been taking advantage since Ronnie Jr. came into our lives. Creep!

I told you I'd do it all for Conchita! Where and when, sweetie!

I hope Conchita knows the work I do for her!

Jan 2nd, 2002, 04:07 AM
damn.
now she won't get a seed at Oz unless 3 people ahead of her withdraw.
Hope she gets a good draw.
anybody know when she's playing next?

Jan 2nd, 2002, 05:37 AM
of course, I can't admit to knowing what's -his-name's name! Bad for the ego. Sure, we'll explore all possibilities tonight for Conchita, including doing Tonya Harding numbers on the top 10!

Can't believe Conchita lost! Do better nice time Conchita!

I hope she retires before she falls out of the top-100

I wish her more luck in her next matches.

Call me strange, but the maybe the best thing for Martinez WOULD be not being seeded, then drawing a seed and upsetting her. VERY possible knowing Conchita and with many seeds being out of sorts this early in the year. An upset over a seed means bonus points and lots of confidence.

Jan 3rd, 2002, 01:31 AM
Conchita does seem to play her best tennis when she's the underdog, so I'm a little ambivalent about whether she's seeded or not, it's just I really don't want her to draw like a Serena or Venus or Lindsay because she doesn't seem to be at the level now to pull an upset over them. Maybe Martina Hingis will be playing scrappy and rusty, that would give her some confidence!

Well, I've made it known I'll do all those things you like for Conchita, but just what ARE these things you like? I can take a guess, but Celeste works better with tangible assignments! I don't approve of course of a Tonya Harding incident, but maybe Conchita can host a little Spanish shin-dig the weekend after next and offer lots of wine and other intoxicating things so that many will be hung over and botch their first rounds!
