View Full Version : Consecutive slam finals - sign of greatness!

Most members here in GM agree that slams are the most important tournaments by far. Reaching a slam final is the dream of all tennis players. What else can be a better sign of greatness than making multiple slams finals in a row?

Let's have a look who are the record women in the open era.

1) Graf with 13 consecutive slam finals (87-90)*
2) Navi with 11 (85/87)

3) Court with 6 (69/71)
3) Evert with 6 (84/85)
3) Seles with 6 (91/93)
6) Hingis with 5 (97/98)
7) Mandlikova with 4 (80/81)
7) Sanchez with 4 (94/95)
7) S. Williams with 4 (02/03)
7) V. Williams with 4 (02/03)

*all-time record (incl. amateur era)

You think Seles would have beaten Graf or Novi at Wimbledon 93 ... ?

What makes you think so?
That Seles reached the semis or better in Wimbledon exactly ONCE during her 17-year-long career?

No, because most of the time Graf wins finals and epecially slam finals. Problem in 90/92 was that she missed 6 of 10 slam finals.
As soon as she made slam finals again she of course won the bulk of them.
Had nothing to do with Seles.
We must not forget that Graf was 3-1 H2H in Seles two most successful years (91 & 92). And 5-2 when Seles was #1 in the WTA rankings.

In 75-83 Navi played about 80 tournaments in obscure U.S. towns against mostly U.S. journeywomen and won about 65 of them. She played almost every week to earn some bucks.
We can't compare those tourney with tier1 tournaments of today or of the 90ies. Just have a look at Navi's opponents in those backwater tournaments. You won't recognize many names .....

very true, but i don't think we can compare the people most played in the 90s to the top level of today, it's too hard to judge generation to generation

No wait.

According to Cali, Graf was in a slump between about '90-'93. Then when Seles was stabbed, Graf magically regained the "form" she once had after Seles was stabbed. HMMM..

What happened in 1983 Cali? Why did the tournaments suddenly go from being in 'obscure US towns' to suddenly being legitimate?

I guess all of Graf's wins in the 80's dont count either? Your logic jumps here, there, back, forth, up down, wherever..

As said earlier, if people took you seriously I'd be concerned, but seeing as people (aside from your best girlfriend LDV) regard you as a joke, its just amusing :)

So these "US Journeywomen" and the 'nobodies' (according to our resident fool Calimero) Martina played and beat in tournaments outside the slams that year include such nobodies as:

Chris Evert - Top 5 of all time
Margaret Court - Top 5 of all time
Virgina Wade - Wimbledon champion
Evonne Goolagong - multiple slam winner, arguable Top 10 of all time
Maria Bueno - another multiple slam winner
Nancy Richie-Gunther - another grand slam winner..

There were some 'journeywomen' of course, but the early rounds were just as tough as the early rounds are on the top players these days.

Calimero is just into posting propaganda, all motivated by an intense insecurity and fear that a large % of tennis followers rate Martina Navratilova as a better tennis player than Steffi Graf. Its eating away at him.
