Teacher Charged With Molesting Student Nearly 100 Times

POSTED: 6:47 am EDT April 25, 2005
UPDATED: 11:32 am EDT April 25, 2005

COCOA, Fla. -- Hundreds of students and teachers at Endeavour Elementary School in Brevard County are walking on campus Monday for the first time since learning of disturbing allegations against an instructor.

Cocoa police arrested a veteran teacher over the weekend and charged him with molesting a student nearly 100 times.

Daniel Cliatt, 29, is accused of a crime so heinous, for his first appearance deputies dressed him in a bulletproof vest. Wearing the vest with his hands shackled in front of him, Cliatt appeared before a judge for the first time Sunday, when he answered the judge's questions.

Cliatt is accused of raping a 13-year-old repeatedly after school, at school, every day for months.

Cocoa police say the 29-year-old, 360-pound sixth grade teacher started by showing the boy pornography, then moved to sex acts, almost 100 of them. That didn't stop until, police say, another teacher walked into Cliatt's classroom Friday after school.
"At first, she walked in and didn't know what she was seeing. But she ran out and grabbed a supervisor," explained Detective Barbara Matthews, Cocoa Police Department.

Cliatt has been a teacher at Endeavour Elementary School for five years and he's worked there for 10. The school district is already planning a termination hearing.

"We have been very, very cooperative. We've spent a lot of time with the Cocoa Police Department in order to assist them in this investigation," said Sara Stern, Brevard County School District.

Cliatt is a 2000 graduate of Rollins College. He's been at Endeavour Elementary School for 10 years, first as a teacher's assistant, then as a second grade teacher. He most recently taught the sixth grade. Cliatt was in charge of 20 students.

According to the Brevard County School District, Cliatt passed every FBI and FDLE background check.

God, how disgusting! I am a college instructor, and I would never dream of having a relationship with my students, and they are adults!

What do pedophiles get out of sexually molesting children? I don't understand that.

I don't get why people molest little kids either, it can't be that hard to find someone over 18 who is willing. It can't be really about the sex, it's something more mentally wrong with him.

Of course it isn't about the sex when it comes to sexual assaults. Rapists aren't raping to bust a nut. It's about control and hurting someone because you can.

I'm sensitive to people who have been molested but that doesn't excuse them molesting others. Like, if I was beaten everyday by both of my parents, could I just randomly slap someone upside the head because of this? No.

These type of stories seem to become national when a boy is involved. I guess this society expects that a girl will eventually have heterosexual sex so if she's raped, no biggie, she was gonna do it anyway. But with a boy... since homosexuality is often seen as a taboo... the rape is somehow more damaging. Rape is rape, last time I checked. Nothing against the victim in this case, just noticing a disturbing trend.

Now that I've got all of that out of the way, I hope they hang the fucker by his balls. :fiery:

Of course it isn't about the sex when it comes to sexual assaults.

I was under the impression that pedophiles tended to be sexually attracted to children specifically, in which case it would be about sex. Of course, my impression could be mistaken, and now that I've written it out I do question it's application to *all* molestors of children. However, by definition a pedophile is sexually attracted to children, so I can't be all wrong.

Are all teachers perverts?

yes, but one can be a pedophile and never act on it. but forcing yourself onto someone else must involve something more than just sex... control/power issues. or whatever. i think that's what cari was trying to say??

it's not really my field, so what the fuck do i know? i've never had to force myself on someone.

i had sex with a 15 year old girl when i was 20... what does that make me? some people think it makes me a pedo... i say they have no idea what they are talking about.

As a teacher myself this sort of crime both angers and saddens me. The blatant abuse of authority is beyond disturbing.

And no Bacardi...all teachers are not perverts.

Becs, I was going to address the difference between pedophiles and sexual sadists but I realize that most people view them as the same thing, so I left it alone.

What I'm saying is, in some cultures, sex with children is deemed ok and not criminal but in our society, most would think it was wrong.

The difference, if you can call it that, is a preference to have sex with children. Not meaning to trivialize it, because it physically makes me ill, but it's like men who prefer to boink blondes.

Sexual sadists, predators, etc. are turned on by the violence involved in taking away something their prey deem valuable. Most would agree that one's body is the most sacred possession.

Now where the line crosses, only a psychologist/psychiatrist would know but then again these same people once thought homosexuals were mentally ill.

"Children are our future. It is our duties as parents and educators to arm them with the very best that we can to ensure them success in the future and in their lives."

This statement is lifted straight from the school website in his profile....."ensure a childs success" he states...he has potentialy ruined that young boys life.
However he is categorized....he fits the definition of manipulative sexual pedophile as far as I am concerned.
He should be buggered senseless into the next century.

How dare you not have a relationship with your students? If he is 18, it is ok. BAck in the day, i knew plenty of students who bagged their teachers.........

Hey rokkstar, i disagree. Are you kidding me? People dont give a shit if its ia a boy, they care if it is a girl. A boy is supposed to just "get ova it" but a girl can be much more fragile. Plus if a girl is harmed it can disrupt her reproductive capabilities, etc etc. Clearly either i am out of touch with societal attitudes, or your statement is just wrong. Boys just have to "getover it" girls are not the same thing. Ive seen stories and movies and books about female abuse... to name some how about No More Wire Hangers Movie, books by Maya Angelou, and tons more. Boy abuse cases in the past got much less attention. mabye thats changed recently.

I have to wonder though, why the kid let this happen "over 100 times." It must have been a very meek 13-year old.

Don't know what country you're in, can only guess by the flag. But why is the whole Catholic molestation so big? Because mostly boys were involved. The boy to girl ratio is really uneven.

Michael Jackson's case... little boys are involved and that fact makes it "sicker". If it was little girls people would say "well at least he likes the female gender".

If a boy/man is victimized, it somehow damages his manhood. He has been "punked out", "made a bitch", etc. We expect this type of thing to happen to women because women are the perennial victims in society. They are "weaker" so this kind of thing should happen to them. When it happens to a boy/man and the attacker is another boy/man, it's unexpected and above all, unnatural because, you know, homosexuality is unnatural ;). People can't seem to separate homosexuality from same sex pedophilia for this very reason.

Call it a very bad judgement then...cuz' it's like if I were to compare you with a 15 year old when you were twenty, it wouldn't be a fair comparison because at age twenty you were much more developed mentally and physically than the 15 year old.

well, i'm a female so there wasn't much difference between us physically. she actually looked older than i did

mentally, yes, but had she been a year older, it would've been perfectly legal in my state. which i will never understand, as there isn't that much different between a 16 year old and a 15 year old.
