Venus Williams, Venus Williams and Venus Williams! If ever she were a darkhorse for a tournament this is it..she will be ranked outside the top 12 and will have played only 1 tournament on red clay before the tournament at istanbul

No on expects her to win here but no one expected myskina to do so either last year. I hope she draws lindsey in the 4th round- lindsey on red clay would be the perfect match up to give her some confidence early on in the tournament..

Come on venus- you can do it...:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I would definately pick Kim Clijsters as the favourite to win the title but there are other players like Maria Sharapova and Justine Henin-Hardenne that are READY to take the title too...

As my DARKHORSE I would pick both Mary Pierce and Elena Dementieva...They really know how to play on clay...it just depends on how they will "bring it together"...

My prediction :

4-Finals :

Elena Dementieva beats Venus Williams 7:5 6:4
Kim Clijsters beats Amelie Mauresmo 7:6 4:6 6:3
Justine Henin-Hardenne beats Serena Williams 6:3 3:6 7:5
Mary Pierce beats Maria Sharapova 7:6 7:5

Semifinals:

Kim Clijsters beats Elena Dementieva 2:6 7:5 6:1
Justine Henin-Hardenne beats Mary Pierce 6:7 7:5 6:2

Final:

Kim Clijsters beats Justine Henin-Hardenne 7:6 6:2

I have seen Justine play many a final and I am not sure that a lot of players are capable of beating her in important finals.

In the semi final she has had enormous fights, but in the final she beat the crap out of the opposition. She hasn't lost a final in more than 2,5 years of tournaments that are higher than a TII. And it wasn't always Kim she has beaten (Serena, ...). She seems to bring something special in a final. Just look at what happened to Mauresmo at the Olympics. I don't know how she does it, but she just plays better in a final. I wonder how many players would have beaten her in her first slam win at RG in 2003. Kim didn't stand a chance against her. She just blew her off court.

Many name seeded players as darkhorses for the 2nd week, i mean aren't these 16 seeded players expected to reach the second week? how come they have been considered darkhorses?

I don't know whether you'd consider her a dark horse for the second week (is it dark horse to reach the second week, or dark horse to do well in the second week?). If not then Maria Kirilenko.

I don't often put money on sporting events, but I'd put money on Justine if she were in the final. She just doesn't lose finals very often and I just can't see her losing the RG final in particular. She may lose in any other round but don't see it happening in the final.

I see Kim Clijsters as the favorite to win the French Open. She just is on another level above everyone else right now. If she continues to play the way she played at Indian Wells and Miami, there is no doubt in my mind that she will win the French Open. I have a couple of darkhorses. Nicole Vaidisova, Jelena Jankovic, and Tatiana Golovin. I would have added Ivanovic but her movement isn't there yet. These players need to be in the same draw as Myskina, Molik, Mauresmo, Venus, or Lindsay to make it far into the second week of the French Open. They have that Myskina-esque game. They can just hit and run for hours at a time and not miss a shot and still produce winners. Variety will endanger them on the courts BUT there's not that much variety in the women's game in the top 50 right now so they really have a good chance to do something there.

Justine is a great player, especially on clay, but isn't it a little premature to talk about how she would play in the final before the read clay season has even started, let alone the tournament itself?

Nicole Vaidisova is my second week darkhorse.

Not bad picks, but I might say Ana Ivanicovic or is it with a k?(sorry) has better chances of going further if she keeps her form of late, these two both seem on the rise and their potential seems unlimited, should they reach it to its fullest we might see future top 5 players in them.
