2. Black women are the most beautiful women, period.

Time to apply what we all should have learned in critical thinking:

What do all these ladies you mentioned have in common?

*gives you time to think*

give up?

LIGHT SKIN!

Wow, Cosmo, Vogue and all the clones really broke the bank by calling two half-white women (Halle and Alicia) and two light-skinned black women with narrower noses and foot long weave (Tyra and Beyonce) beautiful.

I guess "diversity" means "don't go more than 5 shades darker than the average white person" to many of these magazines. When's the last time you saw a black face on the cover of Cosmopolitan? Glamour? I know Elle currently has Alicia on the cover. Vogue? If you can't remember, there's a good reason why... :tape:

That's precisely why we have magazines like Essence and Latina that realize that beauty comes in more shades than you can count on one hand.

Kind of like why there's a TENNIS magazine. SI and ESPN magazine don't focus enough on tennis.

But I guess genre magazines are only bad when it involves race. Sacré Bleu!

Let me start off by saying that I have absolutely nothing against any race, nothing against the sisters (I like them) and nothing against this magazine...

Maybe the women I mentioned have a lighter shade of skin, but theyre still African American. To start complaining now that they arent black enough... that's just stupid, frankly.

Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Vogue, and all those kinds of magazines... I have no idea whos on the cover of those cause I couldnt give a shit about any of them and I'm a guy.

It's great for magazines like Essence and Latina to celebrate black women, but its a false statement to say that this magazine "realizes that beauty comes in more shades than you can count on one hand" because judging by what I've read in this thread, you arent going to find any white girls of any shade in there.

There are no magazines to my knowledge that ONLY have white women in it though. They're in there but do any of these mags have the guts to put a woman of color on the cover EVERY month for a year? Of course not because they don't think white women will buy it if they see a minority face on it.

Cariaoke
Apr 19th, 2005, 11:13 PM
Ok, so let me get this straight, because racism is supposedly dead since Cosmo and the clones decide that a certain, read non-threatening, black is acceptable to call beautiful and at the time Essence, Jet, Ebony, et al were founded, racism was more open, the latter magazines should halt the presses.

"Well, yeah, they may be light but they're still black." That's like SI having a story about squash and tennis fans saying "see, it's almost like they're talking about tennis".

Like I said before, I guess genre magazines are only a problem when race is involved.

There would be no point to just put black women on the cover of a magazine for a whole year though. And I bet if you look through the history of all these magazines you are criticizing, you will see that there have been more African American cover girls than you think. ;)

Sorry but you're talking to the wrong person. I'm 36 and know what you're saying is inaccurate (putting it nicely ). But WHAT WOULD BE THE POINT of putting a white woman on cover after cover?? I didn't say they were LESS.

I'm saying they are more VALUED in the obviously white magazines because they APPEAR to be less black. Less black = more magazine sales. Why do you think certain women are made lighter when they are put in these same magazines? Every girl gets photoshopped but they make the darker women lighter because it's "more appealing". The too light white girls get a photoshop tan. Pretty soon, every race will be the same shade thanks to this practice.

But to reiterate, I NEVER said they were not black enough.

Don't put words in my mouth, hun. :)

Many good points made though.

This is what I've noticed in non-minority mags when placing a woman of color on the cover (IF ever...):
1) Pick models with lightest skin color possible so that the general public (white) will accept em and buy mag.
2) Alter the dark-skinned models enough so that features appear white, so that general public will buy mag.
3) Make sure to connect model with or to white relative, friend, or boyfriend or so that general public will buy mag. (use 6-degrees of separation if possible).

It's all marketing driven drivel, but it's funny cuz most men don't give a damn. If the woman is beautiful (and wearing tiny pieces of clothing), the mag will sell. :wavey:

Still, thank goodness for mags like Essence where you always find beautiful dark-skinned sistas to oogle. :hearts:

Hmmm...

since Essence is a well-known black magazine... why state the obvious by saying "35 most beautiful BLACK female celebrities".

I see who failed critical thinking. :tape:
Well, there might be people who have never heard of this magazine (i.e. me) so for these people the thread title is misleading. :)

Pretty sad that there's obviously still need for having "black" magazines.

Okay maybe it's not misleading if it was an open poll where you could vote for anyone. :)

In that case, the thread title is only "confusing". :)

Considering that you have never heard of this magazine and somehow feel you have been mislead, you seriously are only projecting onto yourself and answered why there even needs to be a "black" magazine. Your state of constant confusion and ignorance to what is around you is quite sad.

Dear, the magazine is wrong to declare these women "most beautiful" if is openly directed at a group of people only. :)
And why should I care for a mag that has zero relevance for my life?

Sweetie, the magazine is in its right to state that these women are the most beautiful women because that is what they are. Especially considering that any bright person who knows what Essence magazine is all about to begin with wouldn't even question that declaration. You didn't even know about the magazine, what are you even complaining about? You seem to care, the number of posts within in very thread over your confusion, hurt that you didn't know about the magazine and that ignorance caused you to be confused is clearly evident. If not the magazine, the Sisters obviously have some sort of relevance in your life, that's the only thing you don't seem confused about :)

Venus and Serena are tennis players. This thread has three pages. I read the thread. :)
I read rokkstarr's post and explain that not all people know the magazine. I don't see what's wrong with that.
And yeah, another reason for entering this thread was that I was wondering how the Williams sisters made this list when they don't belong there IMO, just like all other tennis players. :)

Why you're so eager to share you ignorance is beyond me. You're rejecting something you know nothing about. The Williams Sisters are beautiful women and that is all they needed to be to appear on Essence's list.

It seems to me that he just has to have SOMEthing to argue about when it concerns the Williams. BTW, GoDominique, you just made the "black magazine" case right here...."And why should I care for a mag that has zero relevance for my life?" That's exactly the way a whole lot of black women feel about magazines like Elle, Vogue, etc. Therefore, we have magazines for us by us and about us with issues that WE can relate to. If not, we'd still have this long lingering question of "IF WE DON'T CREATE IT, THEN WHERE THE HELL ELSE ARE WE GONNA GET IT". It's that simple. Hope I helped clear any confusion there might have been. You're welcome.

I don't know if being black is a requirement BUT if there had been a LEVEL PLAYING FIELD since the inception of women's magazines, Essence and Latina wouldn't be necessary.

It's great for magazines like Essence and Latina to celebrate black women, but its a false statement to say that this magazine "realizes that beauty comes in more shades than you can count on one hand" because judging by what I've read in this thread, you arent going to find any white girls of any shade in there.Interesting how you'd make that statement when there are hundreds of magazines owned by whites that you very seldom, if ever see a black face in. Of course, unless their hands are tied behind their backs. Guess you've probably never thought about that, now have you?

There are no magazines to my knowledge that ONLY have white women in it though. The vast majority of them probably have far more white women than african american women in them, yes, but there arent ONLY WHITE WOMEN in these magazines. You'll still see Beyonce, HAlle Berry, Ashanti, Alicia Keys, etc in all kinds of magazines. Maybe you think that because you're white. In the so called magazines you're referring to, how many articles are about things of interest to the black community are in it. Of course you don't know because you're not black and probably don't pay attention to that tid bit.

You can't tell them their wrong. It's their list. They can say who is the most beautiful if they want to. It's their OPINION. Everyone has one, get your own.
