Mary made the following classifications:

Big Bangers
Sharapova
V. Williams
S. Williams

All Court
Davenport
Mauresmo
Clijsters
Henin

What do you think? Davenport as All Court :tape:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Interview from Tennis-X

X: In Indian Wells you talked about what a player needs to become No. 1 nowadays. It seems like there is a "big banger" camp and an "all-court" camp -- I want to run the names of the players likely to be in the race for the year-end No. 1, and I want to see what camp you put them in.

MP: Okay.

X: (Lindsay) Davenport.

MP: (Exhales, pauses) Hmmmmmm....that's a tough one...yeah, because she's not afraid to come into the net, but she doesn't come in a lot, so...that's tough. She's just good all-around...

X: What about (Amelie) Mauresmo?

MP: Mauresmoooooooo...yeah, all-around.

X: (Maria) Sharapova?

MP: Sharapova's a big banger.

X: Venus (Williams)?

MP: More a big banger.

X: Serena:

MP: A big banger.

X: How about the two Belgians?

MP: Kimmmmmm, and Justine I would say, all-around.

Davenport should obvious be in the first category.
I wonder where Elena D would fall.

It seems Lindsay only got into the all court game group by having touch and good volleys... I'd say Lindsay is both! :D

Sharapova a big banger!? Nice. My favourite part of the interview ---->

Personally, when 'big banger' is a category I'll forgive the limitations of labels.

so Davenport doesnt come in a lot, but shes all court...
Venus and Serena (to a lesser extent) come in loads nowadays and they're bangers...

thank god i like Mary Pierce :hearts:

She had a tough time putting Lindsay in there. Lindsay plays a lot of doubles and so has great touch at the net so yes she has an all-cour game. Venus too i'd say would fall in that category. Serena and Maria don't come to the net and thats understandable because their net game isn't all that great . :)

Serena goes to the net quite a lot in general :wavey:

!<blocparty>!
Apr 18th, 2005, 07:21 PM
Maria should be up there in the big bangers :) The others all have all court playing abilities, but dont employ them that much. Lindsay and Venus are both very capable at the net but have good enough basline games not to need to be up there every other point. Serena can't really volley well, at all.

Venus is an all court player.....all court being just as comfortable at the net as the baseline...

Lindsay is one of the founders of big babe tennis

I wasn't impressed w/Justine's volleys in the FC final. While she won a good % of her net forays, her volleys weren't very crisp.

I think Amelie has the best volleys, and Venus has the best net game.

DA FOREHAND keep dreaming please, Henin has wonderful volleys, but Venus cannot handle anything below her waist -- she comes to net to hit a smash or shake hands, and if she's at the net and doing neither of those, she's usually getting passed or awkardly attempting and failing to hit a ball at her feet.

Anyway I disagree with the whole Davenport thing, but I suppose Mary would know, wouldn't she?

Hmm..? I wonder how she defines 'big-banger'?
Anyway, I hope most WTA players agree with her, because I've seen both Venus and Serena's net game improve greatly as of late. So when they decide to venture to the net more often, their opponents won't be prepared. Maybe this (mis)characterization is why Mary losses to them whenever they meet? http://deephousepage.com/smilies/scratchchin.gif

I'm surprised at this comment. Although Justine had a few high volleys (which she dealt with "crisply"), the majority of her volleys were tough, lunging shots - many of which were hit at or below net level - the toughest shots in tennis other than half-volleys. Justine's technique is as good or better than any current player on the WTA tour: it's a joy watching a player actually hitting an approach shot with the intent to approach!

Let's see....second tournament in eight months, winning 24 out of 32 net points in a final...not too shabby.

whose matches have you been watching? Your statement is just plain false. Venus is an excellent volleyer of high balls. But anything down low is trouble for her. If Venus had a good low volley, she could be a serve and volleyer. But she doesn't (very few women do), and she isn't. She is a baseliner.

I agree. This statment assumes that a big banger hasn't carefully thought out where, when, and how much to bang during the course of a rally. There is hitting hard, and there is hitting harder, and only thoughtful player can apply this strategy successfully.

OTOH, many tennis enthusiasts enjoy the all court player, as they can see a wide variety of shot selection, often during a single point.

I agree! When I first read this I didn't even think there was a "bad" one until people started getting mad about it. But in my opinion, they are both really good and I agree with Mary. The sisters are big bangers, no doubt about it, and look what they accomplished by it. Like 6 or 7 grand slams each. They are good at the all court stuff too, but their sheer power overshadows everything. THat is damn good if you ask me. But on the other side of it, all court is good too because it means they are well rounded and can adapt to anything. Justine would definately go into that category. Either way, there is no "bad"....only good!!

Yup Amelie has the best technique at net and very very good approach shots. Venus on the other hand may not have the technique but her volleys are pretty good, granted she doesnt have Lisa Raymonds hands but her stab volleys arent too shabby and her net game is very efficient very few if any can get anything past her at net because of her reach and great court coverage and reaction timing. Her backhand swinging volleys and high bh volleys are sweet, shes so solid off that wing. Yeah Henin may have soft hands but her volleys dont even come close to Mauresmo's, heck I'd say Venus has a much better net game.

I dont think Clijsters is all court either. She does play a lot of doubles but in singles she hardly ever attacks the net. Henin and Mauresmo's volleys are overrated IMO, just bc they have one handed BHs it looks better but they make a lot of errors at the net volleying. But hardly any of the top 10 have net skills, I'd say the only ones are Dementieva and Mauresmo.

dementieva, well, the only time i saw her get to the net that many times was at the USO semis against capster last year.

and what does having a one handed bh have to do with this?

and her volleys are gonna get better cuz she wants to win wimbledon.

Justine' volley's at the FCC were not as crisp as they had been, even prior to her peak during IW of '04. You have to watch her volleys from the USOpen against Safina and Capriati. she managed so many spectacular shots!

Volley's are some of the hardest shots to add after he long lay off... she needs a few more tournaments until she'll have better approach shots and in turn, better and more effective volleys

I disagree. It's not all about tecnique; it's about reaction time, anticipation, and guts.

It's one thing to have a 75 mph. groundstroke coming when you're at the baseline: quite another when you're at the net, watching an opponent take a big ol' backswing
from the service line...

So touch around the net makes you less of a big banger? Venus is much more effective at the net than Lindsay, all day everyday and twice on sunday.
