View Full Version : Strange Dementieva Comments...

"She was playing unbelievable today. In the second set, you know, I just missed a great chance to make it 5-4 for me on my serve," Dementieva said.

"Justine, she plays even better than she was before her illness," she added.

Didn't Dementieva say that about Kim, too? I don't think this is true. Justine and Kim probably don't even think this yet. They both believe there is room for improvement, and there is. I just found it odd how she made this comment about both Kim and Justine.

i don't think it's true either, you know how players will just say random stuff sometimes after a match.

At least this is a very pleasing and classy comment of a player in defeat.

I hope her "best-friend" can learn from her.

Elena, you just make me love you more!

dont know about justine because i havent seen her play yet upon her return to the tour this year but it looked to me that kim was playing at least as well as she was before the injury if not better, which makes it even more exciting to see what else she has to show us once she is fully back into the tour and back into the rhythm.

I think Elena meant to say that they are playing better now, than when they were injured. Elena didn't explain it well Illness same thing as being sick, hurt, samething to Elena.

Great Job today Elena!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:worship: :worship: :worship: :worship:

As far as Kim, I actually do think she is playing better than before. I think she feels like it's a blessing to play again, along with the fact that she is starting from the bottom again, which takes off the pressure. It shows in her game. Like after being down 4-0 to Davenport, I really don't think the Kim before injury would have fought back so well. I think now she realised "Hey, Davenport is #1 right now and she just beat Sharapova 6-0 and 6-0, and here I am just coming back from injury, so just play my game and see how it goes." Just a completely different outlook.

Now when Kim gets back to the top and is expected to win again, which now people will already expect her to do well, we will see if the outlook remains and how long she plays without pressure.

Well it was true that she blew chance after chance but it's not true that Justine is playing better than before....Justine had so many double faults (two) and ue's in the game that Dementieva won to tie the score 4-4 all. Everytime Dementieva would get a lead on Justine's serve she would follow it up with a ue or 2...Then in the 2nd set she was double fault queen. If Elena played half the points when in a lead in a game better she would've won. Even on Elena's own serve when she was in a lead like 40-15 she would then double fault and hit a ue...Justine played well but I wouldn't say great.

If it would make me feel better, I'd say my opponent was playing amazing. Whether it's true or not is irrelevant for her as long as she believes it, than it's all good for Elena! Too bad she lost that final. It may have been nerves. Her record in finals isn't too good is it?

Well if I was on the comeback trail or in my first final she's the one I would want to be playing against. :tape:  :tape:

Well...in Justine's case. I think there may be some sort of truth.
Elena played her exhibition back in December. Justine was very
wonky and kept on hitting the frame on her returns. Zero confidence
back in December.

Maybe she likes Justine. That Gold Diamond encrusted
Rolex wrist watch she got as a gift from Justine at the exhibition
may have done the trick. :)

...wait...was it Justine who bought the watch from her own pockets or was it a promotional gift from tournament organisers?

Anyway, I don't really agree with Elena. Justine struggled a bit leading up to the finals, plus clay is her strongest surface, so I don't think Justine was playing "better" than pre-illness.

well, of course she said that. i mean, losing to a player who's been out that long and on only her 2nd tournie back is pretty embarrassing.

but with kim, its true, kim is better now. great serving and much improved forehand.

i hope elena finally wins a big one this year. not a GS but a tier 1. moscow, hopefully.

Maybe she got a discount from the sponsors; but everyone who
went will tell you that the hosts announced that this year's
presents to the players will be from Justine personally
and then she gave Elena, Sveta and Dechy those watches in
boxes during the finale of the exhibition.

We had a big laugh over at H2HQ in how if Justine knew
she would get her ass kicked by her best buddy Dechy,
and lose to Elena she may have purchased SWATCH
watches instead to give away. :p

Well then, I guess it's good in a way that Justine won in Charleston...that big fat pay cheque she got from winning the tournament will at least cover a fair bit of the cost from having to buy those watches :)

I think those comments stem more from respect at Justine. If she did play THAT well on the big points, then in my mind too, she played unbelievably. To have that mental fortitude and hit THOSE kinds of shots BP down, etc. is amazing. Especially in your second tournament.

Plus I do think Elena likes Justine. Must be the French Connection. Or maybe Elena fancies Pierre Yves? ;)

Elena can't even pay a simple compliment without having her motives questioned.

I'm surprsied no one has called her any names yet.

maybe so but it was still better quality than those butt-ugly Williams grand slam finals.

Justine was not at her best ever. She was excellent at some times but patchy in others. There were times Elena could have taken hold of the match and dominated, but she fluffed them.

Justine served hard and played some excellent shots, but she's not back at her old level (yet). I think she was lucky to get past Davenport. I fear Elena is covering for her loss of a match she could easily have won.

Its not strange. She just got her ass kicked by a player who has been off the tour for how long now? And with a strength sapping virus. How embarassing is that?

How many finals has she lost now? She said that to save face.

Actually, if you watch her semi-final interview you will see that she said Justine is playing better now even BEFORE the match. She said that JHH is physically stronger and more powerful than she was.....so fuck off.

I thought it was a pretty good match and even though Justine hasn't quite gotten back to being as good as she was, she still seems as mentally tough as she was before. I don't know what Dementieva was trying to say, maybe she was making excuses for losing, but neither Kim nor Justine is quite back yet.

Kim seems to be more mentally focused but the true test IMO will be when she plays Serena and/or Justine, but especially Serena since she has always choked against her and Justine is also just back to the tour like Kim. Her game still needs some fine-tuning, IMO, but to win both March tourneys and not be all back yet says a lot.

I was really impressed with Justine because she has had some really tough matches since her comeback against all kinds of people, but to win this tourney after all that and still not be at your best just makes the WTA future seem more exciting.

Now, if the Venus that I love and adore would just get her shit together what a wonderful world of tennis for me.

Elena smiled and laughed during the final. During her bad luck net shots which fell back on her side; at her own errors and mishits.
you simply can not do that during a final. You need to be an animal every minute out there. Ask Capriati.

Elena was just really showing a lot of respect for Juju. Off course Justine was not playing better than before, but it's a great comment from Elena! She's really a very very kind girl!

Elena always laughs or smiles or screams at her shots. I think there is nothing wrong with that, she is just an emotional player and that makes her even more entertaining. It might even help her take a bit of pressure off her back.

I saw both Kimmie and Justine in person down in Miami and I think they both looked very good. :hearts:

Justine was very rusty, and got tired playing Maria but she seem to have determination and great spirit. Especially after getting beaten 1-6 in the first set and falling way behind in the second. Kimmie had shaken off the rust pretty well and was moving great.

I'm really happy to see both these girls back and playing. They will improve in the coming weeks and will eventually be back where they belong . . . at the TOP.  And those pretend players [the Russkies] will all fall to the bottom, where they belong (except for Maria).
