Her record for a Top 5 player is pretty :o

Olympics 2000 lost to Venus Williams. No surprise. No one could beat Venus at that stage.

Acapulco 2001 lost to Amanda Coetzer. A good chance but Amanda loved Acapulco and was also playing well then.

Moscow 2001 lost to Jelena Dokic. Dokic was in great form at the end of 01 but after thrashing Hingis Elena missed a great chance for a title.

s-Hertogenbosch 2002 lost to Eleni Daniilidou. 2002 was a forgettable year for Elena so her only final being on grass was a surprise. Eleni was having/had the tournament of her life though.

Amelia Island 2003 beat Lindsay Davenport. Great tournament and easily the best career tournament win. Davenport was on fire there but so was Elena.

Bali 2003 beat Chanda Rubin. Favourite for tournament and was in too good of form to lose to Chanda.

Shanghai 2003 beat Chanda Rubin. See Bali.

Miami 2004 lost to Serena Williams. Awful. Everything was off and didn't make Serena move out of 1st gear.

French Open 2004 lost to Anastasia Myskina. Worst final of a slam since the millenium. Elena had lost before a ball had hit the court.

US Open 2004 lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova. Totally dominant for Sveta. Elena's run really put pay to her chances. Never really looked relaxed there.

Hasselt 2004 beat Elena Bovina. Survived after pressure. Elena's fighting skills were the reason she won.

Moscow 2004 lost to Anastasia Myskina. Totally collasped after losing 1st set.

Charleston 2005 lost to Justine Henin Hardenne. Chances yet again not taken.

Not impressive. I think Elena's big problem is her belief. It just isn't there in the really big matches.

I was thinking the same thing, Dementieva just can not win. What is wrong with the girl.

Oh Yeah! It's that pathic serve. Go work on you serve Elena. You have wonderful ground strokes.

It's not hte serve. She just can't "get up" for big finals like this.

Lena has won 4 tournaments in the last 2 years. She's in the top 5.
She's doing okay.

Well itís pretty obvious that most will say her serve. Especially in todayís game when the serve is of utmost importance, itís not just a way of starting the next point, like it was a few years back. Many players now rely on her serve, just like the men, to get herself out of trouble. Elena canít do this.Iím amazed sheís done so well with her serve the way it is. Or else it says that the rest arenít as good as they seem. Or else she would be getting pulverised more times.

I agree with what you say, she's doing okay.:) But I'm sure Elena said herself she wanted to be #1. And being just okay won't achieve this goal.

she's like the modern version of mary joe fernandez. reaches lots of finals but usually ends up the runner up

I agree with what you say, she's doing okay.:) But I'm sure Elena said herself she wanted to be #1. And being just okay won't achieve this goal. The way to get to #1 is to defend her red clay points, and have a huge Wimbledon, with Lindsay and Maria not defending their points.
It's difficult, but not impossible.

You stick by your player, good for you.:)

But I don't see it happening.

She's doing okay. Doing ok is not good enough. She's almost 24...time to step it up, and win that tier1 and grand slam title.. Too many good teenagers coming up behind her. The pressure is on. She's such a great player. Groundstrokes are outstanding, especially forehand...and her retrieving skills are excellent. Serve needs work, but she's getting there. Now its a matter of mental strength and desire.

Its quite frustrating. There needs to be a change in her mental game.

It just seems to crumble oh so slightly at key times, and that can be enough for her to lose her way.

Maybe a new coach may help?

IMHO she needs to grow up while it's still not too late. I actually was astonished when I heard her cry "Out! Mommy, it was out!" on a questionable call during this year AO.
Olga as a coach is ok, IMO. But to my knowledge she's been expending too much energy fighting bugs in Lena's head and Mommy Vera.

I like her but her serve is :o . Hopefully she will improve and win a GS one day. That would be uber kuyos. :)

Elena's a good player with a good game but maybe she just lacks that killer instinct?

They call that Tim Henman syndrome :P

Oh shit, I didn't just say that did I...?

Elena is too passive at times, engaging in neutral baseline rallies waiting for her opponent to make a move.

it's the serve. really. At some point in a big tournament she's gonna meet a player who can hold serve more consistently than her. The girls serve too big nowadays.

Yeah it is the serve. You can't rely purely on your ground game for every single match. Too many big serving babes out there. The dfs are really too much and from what I've seen today she's using that fluff second serve again.

I agree

She needs to be MAD!!
She seems always happy
Never with that Sharapova Face: "I will hit that ball right on your ASS!!"
She has to more agressive

Sometimes, when she gets mad, like in USO, she do well
After that wrong call that took Momo for TB in the last set, Lena was ON FIRE
The TB was 7-1 for her, and even she said: "I dont know, I was mad after that wrong line call"

She has to be angry often, then she will win
Look what she does with Sveta now everytime that they face each other!!
She just need take a person that she do not like in finals or a wrong line call again

Is not the server, she already show us what she can do whitou a server....
