Lena is having a strong 2005.
Now she plays her first Fed Cup match since 2003.
And she is the only Russian in the top 10 who is playing.
The tie is in Italy on April 23 & 24.

Myskina withdrew.

Elena might have to carry this Fed Cup team, at least in this first round.

why look at the tournament as a loss in the final.i think elena should look at the previous matches.how she got there.a loss in the final is better than a low profile exit early on.she needs the serve to stand pressure so she won't improve unless she plays finals.i feel she should have attacked jhh at 5-3 and keep in control.

Dinara starts against Schiavone.
Then Lena plays Garbin.
On day 2, Lena plays Schiavone.
If it's 2-2, the Lenas will play doubles.

Russia will win against Italy. With Belgium likely to be stepped on by the US, it's us, Russia and France who are in the driver's seat.

It will be hard to root against Lena in the semis, but I must. Of course, if the USA loses I'll be 100% behind Russia because of Lena D.

Well Schiavone has a bad year, but you're right Ronaldo, Schiavone can have a bad year, but she can get herself loaded up for the Fed Cup, i think Lena can handle her... ;)

To be honest, if Russia (with Lena in team) played with Poland I will root for Russia and Lena.

That's it. Because tennis is an individual sport, I root for my favorite players in all the tournaments and Grand Slams. Sometimes my faves (Martina N., Jim Courier, Todd Martin) are Americans, sometimes (Lena D., Carling Bassett-Seguso, Roger Federer, Ivan Lendl) they aren't.

I feel that David and Fed Cup are an exception. They are like the World Cup and national loyalty trumps all others. So in Fed Cup play I will pull for the U.S. Just my feeling. I can understand why some people support their favorites all the time no matter what.

Just my 2 cents.

But in any case, I hope Argentina can play with Russia. to see Lena!!

Modest Dementieva inspires Russia to Fed Cup win over France
Jerome PugmireCanadian Press

Thursday, September 22, 2005

http://a123.g.akamai.net/f/123/12465/1d/media.canada.com/cp/tennis/20050918/k091814a.jpgElena Dementieva of Russia celebrates her victory after defeating Amelie Mauresmo of France during the Fed Cup final at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris, Sunday. (AP/Michel Euler)http://a123.g.akamai.net/f/123/12465/1d/www.canada.com/images/s.gif

http://a123.g.akamai.net/f/123/12465/1d/www.canada.com/images/s.gifPARIS (AP) - Elena Dementieva refused to take the credit for Russia's Fed Cup win. She should, though.

The eighth-ranked Russian won both of her singles matches and teamed with Dinara Safina to take the deciding doubles match Sunday in the best-of-five series to beat France 3-2.

"It's not Dementieva's victory," Dementieva said. "We win as a team and lose as a team."

Dementieva and Safina beat Mary Pierce and Amelie Mauresmo 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Dementieva beat both in singles, also.

"She carried the team this weekend," Mauresmo said. "She was so solid."

France captain Georges Goven was impressed also.

"I take my hat off to Dementieva," Goven said. "I knew she was a great athlete, but this time she was exceptional, gave everything she had and fought until the end."

Dementieva sank to her knees in celebration after Mauresmo hit a forehand long on match point at Roland Garros. Russia beat two-time champion France 3-2 in the final last year in Moscow.

"I've been waiting so long for this," Dementieva said. "I'm so happy."

Both teams were inconsistent in the final match, with seven breaks of serve in the first set. Pierce and Mauresmo dictated the second set as Russia started to look weary.

Pierce hit one forehand so hard that Safina's racket spun out of her hand, and on the next point the ball smacked the Russian on the thigh.

"I didn't try and hit her on purpose," Pierce said. "Sometimes that happens in tennis, but it was not my goal."

Mauresmo looked nervous throughout the deciding set, increasing the pressure on a tired Pierce to keep France in the match.

"It's hard to analyze straight after a defeat," Mauresmo said. "We played our best but it wasn't good enough. I hope I don't take too long to recover from this."

Pierce then held a love service game to make it 2-2, but a series of loose shots from Mauresmo allowed Russia to break and take a 4-2 lead.

"The Russians are real fighters," Goven said. "They are a united team and are so proud to represent their country."

Earlier Sunday, Mary Pierce came back from 4-1 down in the second set after losing the first to beat 2004 French Open champion Anastasia Myskina 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to even the best-of-five series at 2-2.

Pierce, who lost to Dementieva on Saturday and was nearly dropped for Sunday's reverse singles match, won five straight games and 11 of 13 to get the win.

In the first reverse singles match, Dementieva put Russia ahead by beating Mauresmo 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 - Mauresmo's first Fed Cup singles loss since July 2002, and her third straight to Dementieva.

Neither player could hold serve until Dementieva served to lead 5-3. Both players struggled with consistency.

"I was tired in the third set," Dementieva said. "Amelie was starting to impose herself, so I had to be aggressive and come to the net more."
