Mariah Carey is Officially Back
Mariah Carey's career has declined since 2001 when her movie Glitter, and the soundtrack for it, bombed. Nobody saw it, nobody bought it, and reviews for both were awful.
Virgin paid her over $20 million to leave the label. Read that again. They PAID her $20 million NOT to record anymore for them.
She signed with Universal and her last album reached platinum status, decent but lower than what should be expected for a proven superstar.
But her latest album, The Emancipation of Mimi, released Tuesday, will bring Carey back into that superstar status that she has longed for since the '90s.
According to HITS, a music tracking service, Carey is on pace to debut at number one next week, ending 50 Cent's 6-week reign atop the Billboard chart.
She is on pace to sell over 300,000 copies, surpassing the amount her last album in 2002 sold in its first week.

Hits Daily Double:
Carey Poised to Take Over Fitty’s Throne, While Mudvayne Runs Interference.

Mariah Carey is about to end the six-week reign of 50 Cent. The Island Def Jam diva is on her way to a first-week total north of 300k, with a shot at 350k—and yes, that’s more than we initially projected.

An upward adjustment is also in order for scary Epic band Mudvayne, which is looking like it could hit 150k, with 30-40% of that coming from the DualDisc version of the release. Is it in line for the #2 slot nationally, passing a declining Fitty? Could be.

Well done Mariah :bounce:

Wow, this is good. Mariah hasn't had a #1 album since "Butterfly" in '97. Maybe this time around she'll get her 16th #1 pop single.

It's her best debut week ever...

Mariah Carey's 'Mimi' to debut over 'Rainbow' // 10:16 PM EST

Go ahead and call it a comeback. Mariah Carey is on course to land her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 since 1997 -- and with her biggest opening week ever.

First-day sales of Carey's new "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island/IDJMG) suggest that her eighth studio album could surpass 350,000 units, easily placing it at No. 1 on the big chart.

With a busy promotional schedule during release week -- including visits to "Good Morning America," "TRL," "Live With Regis and Kelly" and "Late Show With David Letterman" -- chart prognosticators suggest Carey's number may rise even higher.

Her last No. 1, "Butterfly" (Columbia/Sony Music), bowed with 235,000 in 1997. Her 1999 set "Rainbow" (Columbia/Sony Music) holds the record for the singer's biggest opening week, having bowed at No. 2 with 323,000 units.

I am glad for Mariah. However, I watch the billboard charts ALL the time and there is something important to watch. When a big star releases an album it always goes to #1 or atleast very close to it. The real testament to the album is where will this album be on the charts in 5 weeks. When word of mouth gets out about it, it will either remain strong in the top 5 or so or will be way down out of the top 10. Look at J-Lo's album, hugely pimped, debuted #2 and then never heard from again. On the other hand you had Kelly Clarkson, who debuted #3 with little press but until the last 2 weeks, remained in the top 10 since her November release! Word of mouth and radio play will tell the tale.

The album should appeal to everyone. Like someone had said, they even like to the floor :scared: And someone else said It's like that it their worst song, I agree, its equal worst with To the Floor.

We belong together jumped to number 4 after 2 days on TRL, and theres so many future hits within this CD. I don't see why it shouldnt do well. Come on Mariah :p

bp, I think "We Belong Together" has a shot of knocking off "Candy Shop". I'm sick of hearing 50's speech impediment-having ass and I'm sick of seeing Olivia's jawline in the video. :o

It's Like That was meant to be a "smash hit" but only reached 16, and she's already had all this hype, just think what a Number 1 single would do....

Maybe Say Something could do it too, even though I don't like it that much. Olivia :scared:....

I totally agree. Candy Shop seriously has the most simple, unintelligant lyrics, I've ever heard. Surely Mariah will take his spot. This song is so catchy. It really sticks your head. So does Candy Shop, but for opposite reasons

I really don't like "It's Like That" that much, mainly because in the beginning it sounds like "How We Do". How many clicks and claps can the public take? I'm kinda :retard: @ them releasing that first. But I think releasing a slow song first is suicide, see "Through The Rain". I guess they didn't have a choice but to release "It's Like That" because I can't imagine any other song in its place.

"Say Somethin'" is way too strong of a song to be released first but I'm sure if it had been, it would have been #1. They should release that as the third single... then "Circles".

The American charts are so different to the UK ones. Firstly the highest entry someone gets is almost always in the first week whereas a debut at number 1 is VERY rare, it happens almost every couple of weeks here.

You think they don't release their best songs first? Mariah's said herself she'd have released say something first.

The last two albums, I don't think they released the hottest songs first.

The formula for Mariah is pretty simple and many artists have the same formula:

A hot song to get the public in the stores and then the strongest ballad, a midtempo song (if it's slow, remix it so it's faster) and then a slow song to top it off.

For example, with Daydream: Fantasy, Fantasy Remix, One Sweet Day, Always Be My Baby, Always Be My Baby Remix, Forever.

Butterfly: Honey, Honey Remix, Butterfly, My All/My All - Stay Awhile/Breakdown, The Roof.

"It's Like That" is one of those in between songs... it's not as bad as "To the Floor" but definitely weaker than 80% of the album.

I think LA Reid said that Mariah will release five singles from the album. After We Belong Together will be Say Something.

Shake it Off, Stay the Night, Get Your Number and Circles are all worthy of being a single. If I had to guess, I would think Get Your Number and Shake it Off will be singles 4 and 5.

OMG! I just realized a cool Kelly Clarkson - Mariah Carey connection! When Kelly's debut album Thankful was released, everyone predicted it would bow in at #2 or #3 because 50 Cent was releasing his CD - DVD combination! Kelly shocked everyone by holding him down to #2 and her album coming in at #1! Now Mariah has a chance to smack 50 Cent down! GO DIVA'S!

I saw this on VH1 and she sounded her usual self. Trey couldn't hit the high notes that well but he did not do bad. I thought Mariah sounded great. Her first song was It's Like That and it was very festive. She had dancers and everything. She then sung a song with John Legend and that was good. It ended with, "I'll Be There".

Performer and songwriter Mariah Carey explodes back onto the U.S. charts as her brand new Island Def Jam album, THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, featuring the singles "It's Like That" and "We Belong Together," nets the greatest first week sales of her career - at 403,755 units - and earns a #1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

"Working with Mariah has been a dream for me since day one," said Antonio "L.A." Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group. "Mariah is a labor of love, and to witness this album's overwhelming acceptance in its first week out is truly inspirational. Congratulations to the entire IDJ team for their tremendous support on this campaign thus far. I couldn't be more thrilled for Mariah's success and for the future of what we believe is one of her greatest albums ever."

The videos for "We Belong Together" and "It's Like That" are both in XXL rotation on VH1. "We Belong Together" - currently in Big 10 Rotation on MTV and Heavy Rotation on BET - provides the stunning conclusion to "It's Like That" - both videos were shot contiguously by famed Hollywood director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon, After the Sunset; Ratner last worked with Mariah in 1999 on the video for her #1 Pop/#1 R&B smash, "Heartbreaker").

Around the world, Mariah continues to be the focus of attention - beginning with the supreme honor of a #1 debut with THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI on Japan's International Albums chart. The "It's Like That" video premiered to more than 81 million viewers in a single day, pushing the single to the #1 most played song on Japanese radio for three straight weeks. On her recent promotion tour of Japan, Mariah's two television appearances had a total audience of 50+ million viewers and her performance of "We Belong Together" on Utaban netted an additional 20 million viewers.

At the same time THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI was the highest debut on the European Top 100 Albums Chart at # 4, including a # 4 debut in France and a # 7 debut in the U.K.

Wall-to-wall television exposure of Mariah in her hometown of New York City accompanied the release week of the album. On April 12th (the in-store date), Good Morning America launched its live outdoor concert season by closing West 44th Street outside their studios, as Mariah took the stage for a live performance of 5 songs with Times Square as her backdrop. She continued her sweep of the city with an MTV TRL appearance and a Best Buy in-store signing where over 3000 fans crowded the streets to get a glimpse of the superstar. Five nights later, VH1 premiered the 8th annual "Save The Music: A Concert To Benefit The VH1 Save The Music Foundation," taped at the Beacon Theatre in New York earlier that week, starring Mariah, Alicia Keys, Rob Thomas, John Legend, and others.

Mariah finished the week in New York with appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Live with Regis & Kelly and a BET 106 & Park performance on April 19. Stay tuned for The View on April 29, then Mariah heads to Los Angeles for appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (May 11th) and The Ellen DeGeneres Show (May 13th). Mariah will also perform on The Oprah Winfrey Show (her "Wildest Dreams" season finale) and will be the subject of a one-hour E! Entertainment special. In addition to an hour-long profile on CNN's People In the News series, hosted by Paula Zahn, Mariah's activities are covered on Entertainment Tonight, The Insider, Access Hollywood, Extra, E!, CNN, Inside Edition, AP TV, Reuters TV, plus continuous news coverage at the local and regional level.

Online this month, MSN premiered the "We Belong Together" video, and exclusively sold the digital single for two weeks prior to album release. MSN will also feature an exclusive interview and behind-the-scenes footage from the star-studded album release party in New York on April 21. Mariah and Island Def Jam Music Group Chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid will welcome the hottest names in music, film and sports, including Jay-Z, Kanye West, Sean Combs, Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Stephon Marbury, Vince Carter, and others. In addition, AOL Music launched a listening party for the album with commentary on each track from Mariah and "We Belong Together" went on to be the number one song on AOL Music last week with 1.5 million streams.

THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, Mariah's 10th studio album, is the long-awaited follow-up to 2002's RIAA platinum Charmbracelet, her IDJ debut, which hit #2 R&B and #3 Pop, and contained the #1 Dance Music hit, "Through the Rain." Heralding the new album's release, the New York Times ran unprecedented features two days in a row. In his Critic's Choice selection, Jon Pareles devoted a lengthy review to the album, summing up "Mariah... makes herself a 21st-century pop contender." The next day, Lola Ogunnaike's interview with Mariah provided the background for an equally lengthy retrospective feature, "A Superstar Returns With Another New Self."

Carey's Comeback Album Opens At No. 1

http://www.billboard.com/billboard/photos/artists/mariah-carey8.gif
Notching the best opening sales week of her career with her eighth studio album, "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island/IDJMG), Mariah Carey finally unseats 50 Cent from the top post on The Billboard 200. "Mimi" moved 404,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, putting her well ahead of 50 Cent's long-reigning "The Massacre," as well as new albums by Mudvayne and Garbage.

Carey last reached The Billboard 200 summit in 1997 with "Butterfly" (Columbia), which started with 235,000 copies and has sold 3.7 million to date.

Hailed in advertisements as "the return of the voice," Carey's latest is considered by many to be a comeback for the once untouchable superstar. In 2002, her Island debut "Charmbracelet" managed a No. 3 opening with 241,000 copies and has so far sold 1.1 million. That set followed a brief stint at Virgin that was marked by the much-maligned all-Carey soundtrack to the universally panned film "Glitter."

Mudvayne scores the best sales week of its career with "Lost and Found" (Epic), which moved 152,000 copies to open at No. 2. The band's fourth album features its biggest airplay hit, "Happy?" which is No. 2 this week on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks list. The new set follows 2002's "The End of All Things to Come," which opened at No. 17 with sales of 79,000 copies; it has sold 680,000 to date.

After six weeks on top, "The Massacre" (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) falls to No. 3 on a 15% sales slip to 140,000 copies.

One slot lower, Garbage earns the first top 10 album of its career with "Bleed Like Me" (Geffen), an improvement over the No. 13 opening for 2001's "beautifulgarbage" (Almo Sounds/Interscope. Despite the disparity in chart positions, first week sales of 75,000 for "Bleed" are not that far ahead of the 73,000 copies initially moved by "beautifulgarbage," which has sold 385,000 to date.

Faith Evans' "The First Lady" (Capitol) drops 2-5 on a 60% decline to 63,000 units, while the 18th installment of the "NOW That's What I Call Music!" series dips 4-6 on a 20% fall to 61,000 and Beck's "Guero" (Interscope) slides 3-7 on a 28% drop to 58,000 copies.

In its 30th week in the top 10, Green Day's "American Idiot" (Reprise) falls 7-8 on a 3% dip to 57,000. Gwen Stefani's "Love, Angel, Music, Baby" (Interscope) re-enters the top tier with a 15-9 move on an 18% boost to sales of 56,600 copies. The Killers' "Hot Fuss" (Island) also rebounds, moving 11-10 on a 2% gain to 55,000.

Video of the year honors at last week's CMT Music Awards for "Days Go By," and a performance the song on NBC's "Today" prompted a 67% sales surge to 25,000 copies for Keith Urban's "Be Here." The Capitol Nashville set climbs 59-27.

But making the chart's most notable move is Slipknot's "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)" (Roadrunner/IDJMG). The chart's greatest sales gainer rockets 151-29 on a 261% increase to 24,000 copies thanks to the release of a special edition that features eight new bonus tracks.

Overall U.S. album sales were up about 1% over the previous week at 9.8 million units, but down about 25.5% from the same week in 2004. Sales for 2005 are about 10% lower than 2004 at 165 million units.
