View Full Version : Do you think Clijsters will really win The French Open?

I'm just asking this b/c she does have a history of choking/getting nervous. She won't probably get nervous until the final (if she gets there) But when she makes it, do you really think she'll win? I'm not sure, but I'm just wondering what other people think, will Kim get nervous?

I think she is the favorite at the moment.

I think it's the best time to grab her 1st GS title. I don't think anyone on tour today would bother her too much on clay and any other surface. Even if she face a better form Justine/Serena, she IMO is the favourite. She can easily reach the SFs/Final.

However, a GS is not a T1 - she will definately get tight and the opponent might just steal it from her. So, she should start seeing a sport phychologist to get herself prepared for the chrunch time.

Its best to wait to see how she plays on clay first as she has only played on hardcourt since coming back.

There's no reason why she can't go far - and she can beat the top players in Sharpaova, Davenport and Dementieva - its just a case of a good draw and being able to carry on her good form while holding her nerves.

Definitely! As much as I don't get excited and I don't expect her to win RG this year, I think the past year has helped her mature a lot and I hope this will allow her to go one step further in a GS final ...

I agree with you, since like 3 out of 4 GS finals she's been to were against Justine, she MIGHT get nervous against her, but she might not. Also, even though she hasn't played on clay yet, she's a better mover on the clay (splits! lol) So, this is probably her better surface, she has a VERY GOOD chance at winning.

another question is, won't she burn out before RG with the heavy schedule she has planned: Warsaw, Berlin, Rome, RG

I think she'll win.... with her year off she has returned more hungry and more mature. Plus, she heads into the European clay season well rested, having skipped FCC and AI. I just dont see anyone right now troubling her, esp. on clay.

There will be many factors that will determine if she wins the french and the main obstaacle will be her draw. I believe she will win the French this year as long as she doesnt have to play Venus, Serena, and Justine. Hell she may win even if she has to play all 3 of them... but the ealier she plays them the worse off she is. I dont see her losing to any of them in the final unless they do to her what the usually do and make her run like hell and get back all her balls on top of things. I think its Kims time to finally win a big one and I think she knows this as well.... the break really was a blessing its allowed her to see her career in a different light and she realizes how bad she really wants to be the best. I think Kim could win any of the next 3 grand slams.

I don't think she'll do as well here. I think USO may be where she does her best. Clay exerts a lot of stress on the body and her wrist will be severly tested on the clay.

I also think that as it is her 1st GS back, she may feel a little tight.

But Kim is certainly capable of winning it, just not the favourite in my opinion.

i thought she'll win it. but looking at her schedule, playing 3 straight weeks with one week of rest isn't going to do good to her wrist. i hope she'll withdraw from warsaw...

She gets to the final, but loses. (not getting nervous, her opponent was just outplaying her...)

it is never too good to get over-confident at her chances, but i think she definitely has the game to win it.

some people might question her nerves, but the time off has really matured her and strengthed her up. so i'm not too overly worried about this aspect

I actually think Clijsters will win the French. She will finally get that breakthrough. The only way I think she might get nervous would be if she played Henin-Hardenne.

Here's the thing. In my opinion, she's playing some of the best tennis of her life (even better than when she was at number one IMO). However, I would first like to see her and Justine play prior to RG, because it would be telling as to how Kim can manage herself against Justine. If she can overcome that obstacle, she'll win it. It's never been a question about her game or her talent, it's always been her head, and that seems to be better than before her layoff.

i truly hope she wins.

she chokes against 2 players. serena and justine. with venus, she's always outplayed. HOWEVER, serena is out injured and she might not be at her best form at RG and may not even go far enough to meet kim. same with justine. with venus, well, venus is venus. she could easily lose early at the rate she's going which would be a blessing for kim.

still, if kim wins, i hope she beats these 3 along the way.

I'd say lets wait to see how she does on clay this year.

Apr 16th, 2005, 07:51 PM
ATM, she does have 5 enemies on every surface she plays on, Justine-Serena-Venus-Wrist-Brain. Serena being injured, brain seems to be holding up, Justine is coming out from injury, her wrist coming out from injury and then there's Venus where they both played a nice match in Hamburg in 2002...

Im guessing and hoping that it would be a Clijsters vs Venus in the Finals.

I will now attempt a semi intelligent response (you know me, I never like to gloat). IF Kimmy gets to the final (I don't think she will and don't see why so many of you are talking her up to be the favourite) I reckon she will win. That year off has changed Kim's mentality, I think she's a lot sharper and a bit meaner and that will swing it compared to 2003, Kimmy's "let's gift it all to Justine year" .............

Kim has a great chance of winning the tournament if she stays fit and healthy. I know it would not be a surprise for me to see a player of the calibre of Kim Clijsters win a major title. After all she has managed to reach a slam final before. And I can’t see it being a surprise if she were to win at Roland Garros, after her displays in Indian Wells and Miami.:)

I agree with the dancing queen and E. Blackadder, the time and her last injury have made her more mature and hungry to win. She is definitly stronger than ever and i can't see her without a GS this year. I dunno if it will be RG or something else but i'm nearly 100% sure she will win a GS this year.
Plus, she had always loved the clay and the crowd (there are always many many belgians + the Frenchs love Kimmie a lot :p ) will support her that's sure so she is THE favourite IMO.

I haven't seen anyone else playing as well as I saw Kim play this year: so accurate, taking the ball so early, hitting impossible angles, getting to EVERYTHING. Amazing, really, after all that time away. So, yes, I think she's got an excellent chance to nab the RG trophy this year.

But I kind of worry about her doing those splits and landing on that left wrist the way she sometimes does. I don't think her surgically-repaired tendons could take that.

Based on what? Her HARDCOURT results? Let's wait to see if she wins anything on clay before moving her to the favorites list. Right now Lindsay, Elena and JHH are the faves based on the clay events.

but at least now she has the experience of winning 7 matches in a row. TWICE!

I think that Kim is one of the main contenders to take the title but you can't count the WS, and Justine out. Even if Kim gets past her mental hurdle she still has to overcome those afore mentioned, because they all have the games to beat her.

It would be great to see her win it though.

Apr 17th, 2005, 01:32 AM
I think she has to be the favorite, but i feel like once you are close to having to retire you appreciate it so much more, and lose the nerves, and as long as it's no justine in the finals it could very well happen, i think she needs to be the favorite based on her play, but whoever wins a clay tier 1 has to be up on the list, i think kim's performances in berlin/rome will help gauge well, doesn't even need to win either, just needs to do well and win 1 or 2 tough matches

I agree. I think she will take this, even if she has to face Henin-Hardenne. It's time for her to step it up and be the best in Belgium and possibly the best in the world. And after the break, she seems refreshed, mature, and confident enough to do so.

I think she'll eventually win it...

She's got a fantastic chance now. She's in form, and it seems that the time off has taken pressure off her. However, she's never had problems winning Tier I's, so I guess we can't really tell until she gets deep in Roland Garros.

IŽd like to see her win but I think the FO 2005 is going to be very, very competetive and she will have a hard time but her experience at GS will get her through. I think sheŽll get to the final, and lose, probably to Serena in ss.

Yeah it will sure be interesting. I mean, she didnt choke in indian wells or miami, but she played both tournaments under no expectations to succeed, she was able to use her ability to the max.

Now that there is expectation, maybe the gremlins might come back. Hopefully for her sake she doesnt choke though because i believe she deserves a slam more than anyone on the tour.

Maybe the best thing for her is to tank warsaw and the 2 euroclay tier ones to erase that expectation, then go into french open expecting nothing.
