View Full Version : Serena doesn't acknowledge her opponents?

Quite the contrary...This says otherwise...read and weep haters...:)

"I wasn't sure how Serena would react after that loss, but Serena Williams was the epitome of grace and class after that absolute atrocious treatment she recieved in that semifinal. There's not too many players who would have showed that much class and courage after a match like that."

-Mary Carillo after 2003 French Open semifinal

"She congratulated me and gave me a couple kisses at the net."

-Jennifer Capriati after defeating Serena Williams at 2004 French Open quarterfinal.

"Serena said great job at the net and gave me a pat on the back. I'm sure it was hard from her being defending champion and all."

-Lindsay Davenport after defeating Serena Williams in 2000 US Open.

"I think she took the loss great and I thought it was nice for her to congratulate me after the trophy ceremony. She was very talkative today even before the match. But that's just her you know.

Lindsay Davenport after defeating Serena Williams at 2004 JP Morgan Chase.

"I don't remember exactly what she said but she gave me some words of encouragement and congratulated me."

Patty Schnyder after defeating Serena Williams in 2002 FCC

Yup. People always focus on what Serena does during the match, which might not always be classy (fist pumping opponents mistakes, grunting REALLY loud, screaming, smashing racquets, yelling at linesmen). But when it's "game, set, match" she's all smiles no matter what the outcome.

I agree. There is nothing wrong with showing some passion/determination/fighting spirit during the match. and i have to say at wimbledon 2004 i admired the way she treated maria after the match - the hug and all smiles.
i just don't like how later she comes out with statements such as 'i wasn't there'.

SVSK is trying to fool us with those quotations. For every one he show shere, we can show at least three in which Serena dismisses, ignores or disrespects her opponent. Her aftermatch press conferences are filled with excuses :"Oh that wasn't me out there",which prompted once her rival to say :"well at least I was there!" or "AH.I got a pulled groin",etc,etc,etc,etc.etc.etc.etc.etc.................. ...
Also,SVSK is being disingeneous with these quotations. They are out of context or he is totally misreading them,For instance, about the last one, when Schnyder beat Serena in 2002,the quotation is LITERALY true ,but not the meaning.Serena told Schnyder "Well you might as well win the whole thinh now".By which she meant that after by some weird reason Patty had beaten her,the Best Possible Player Ever in the world, then she might as well win the whole tournament, which Patty actually didn't Iva Majoli did

Yeah, Serena is very graceful after a loss and a win, the last time I can remember that she didn't look too happy (this is understandable) was at the US Open 2004, but that's totally understandable considering what happened. AND At the YEC after the final when Maria was like lying down (LOL) Serena walked all of the way over onto the other side smiling and shook her hand and congratulated her, etc. Also, at Wimbledon she was very nice to Sharapova, lol, but that was before the rivalry started!

Surely if you want to defend Serena you can come up with something better, because those quotes don't prove shit. Seems like you need to come up with something that proves she doesn't other than your obvious dislike for her. No matter what she says or does, you and her detractors will find something wrong with it. WRONG alot of these knocks have come from lame a$$, piss poor half a$$ written articles with half quotes from press confrences. An example? 2002 YEC final against Kim Clijsters, someone posts some retarded article on the board, everyone gets pissed off because Serena mentions the word "tired", forget the fact that she congratulated Kim about 5 times in one freaking sentence, and that the only reason why tired even came up was because A REPORTER ASKED HER IF SHE WAS TIRED.

How long have YOU been watching tennis?? And, I never knocked Serena for it. Q. Have you come here with that focus?

SERENA WILLIAMS: Well, I don't think I was focused enough tonight. I think I could have zeroed in on a few more shots. I think I made way too many errors today. I don't like to use that as an excuse. Monica Seles, whenever she lays off for a while, she comes back and wins and keeps winning. I try, when I'm off for a while, I think about her. If she can do it, I think I can do it, too.

http://www.asapsports.com/tennis/2002hdepot/110802VW.html

Q. You said on television that Monica was your favorite player growing up and you talk about not wanting to lose. That was a quality that she really had when she was No. 1. I assume that's something you remember from watching her?

VENUS WILLIAMS: Sure, I remember all those matches in the French Open when she was down 6-love and the tie breaker with Steffi and, of course, when she played Capriati. I remember all those things. She's my favorite player. Of course, when we play now, I'm rooting for me.

Q. Did you start grunting because of Monica?

VENUS WILLIAMS: I started grunting because of Monica. I never grunted before that, and now I can't stop. You know, I started doing things like her. She was revolutionary. She took the game to another level and makes everyone realize it.

Q. Who is the best grunter in the United States?

VENUS WILLIAMS: I think definitely Monica. I don't actually hear when I'm playing. I don't really hear anything. I think she's definitely got a rhythm going. I can't keep up with her on that part sometimes, though.

You still want to talk of Serena and Venus' lack of respect for opponents and greats of the game? This was fun. Bye. :wavey:

aren't you all missing the point though. No one cares what she says at the net, the problem is what she tells the media, or lack of what she tells to the media.

I'm sure the opponents care more about what she tells them directly, rather than what she tells the media.

I'm sorry, but Serena showed the MOST class after that ATROCIOUS Quarterfinal at the US Open last year. I'm sure Hingis or somebody would have said "That's why I lost." Not serena.

And I like how some people bash the Sisters, when MOST of the players on tour are never really that nice. Mashona Washington said about Maria: She's good, but she's got no OMG shots!: That's not the nicest thing to say. Capriati practically blamed the Media Coverage of her UO Quarterfinal for her loss in the SF.

thats not the only thing. players like Capriati, Henin, Dementieva and Mauresmo have said things directly negative about them, and they only respond with complimentary things, but im sure the fans of these players dont see that.

Exactly, and Venus and Serena stated they don't have to act like the Capriatis, Henins, or Momos because unlike those players, Venus and Serena don't have any problems with them.

im sure they don't, but thats not the point of all the bashing, the bashing comes from the people seeing what she tells the media.

I think it's just if I'd have been healthy, I think I would have won, a hundred percent.

Also commented on Justine's high standard of play and said she played some of her "best tennis".

So she was 100%, or ANYTHING close to that?

oh yeah, she was TOTALLY 100%

Not taking anything away from Justine, because she DID win the match, Serena didn't lose it, but for you to think Serena was anything above 70% is :cuckoo:

EDIT: and before you make some derisive comment, founded in your misunderstanding of my post, when I say Serena didn't lose the match, I mean, it wasn't about her errors or spotty play. Justine had more winners, and although Serena didn't have a backhand for most of the match, Justine played well off of the ground and THAT won the match, but for you to deny the role of Serena's impairments (if not full-fledged injuries) is NUTS and even more "in denial" than you say Serena allegedly is.

Nobody plays at 100 %...Henin could also played better, I say she was at 68.4567 %

well ok, you can have that, but if Justine was @ 68%, Serena was nowhere above 50.

If Justine was FIT and ONLY at 68%, Serena (with a taped thumb and calf- both are KINDA important in tennis) would be around 45%

OH WAIT...she SAID that :o
