I dreamed I was playing in a pro-am event, and I was in a round-robin group with Vera Zvonareva and Maria Sharapova! So I could look forward to playing Vera, playing Maria, and watching Maria and Vera play each other! :D
The courts were old creased pieces of cloth on which it was difficult to make out the lines, and the balls were table-tennis balls, although they still bounced like tennis-balls.
I played Vera first, and I went out there hoping she would beat me 6-0 6-0, because there'd be something very wrong with her form if she didn't! :o
But to my embarrassment, I couldn't even get into a rally with Vera. Every point was either a service-winner by her or a double fault by me. But I did win one point at 0-2, when she attempted to serve and volley and I hit a return-winner past her!
I woke up at 0-3, but fortunately I was able to fall asleep and find my dream again.
In the second part of the dream, Maria had a sister called Maria, which was confusing because they were both called Maria Sharapova and they looked the same! For example, it was one Maria who won my fanship en route to the fourth round of Wimbledon 2003 (let's call her Little Maria), but it was the other Maria (Big Maria) who won Wimbledon 2004. But when I enumerated the players in my fanship, I could only find one Maria Sharapova in my list.
Suddenly, the tournament-organiser called Big Maria off court. Little Maria burst into tears, and when Big Maria came back, she was crying too. "Big daddy died," said Big Maria.
The tournament was cancelled as a mark of respect, so I never got to finish my match with Vera, play Maria, or watch Maria and Vera play each other. I did, however, get to shake Vera's hand - a thrill I'll never get to experience ever outside of a dream. "If you don't believe that you can win, then you can't win," said Vera.
