Reebok Announces End of Roddick Contract

Reebok announced today that they are not continuing their endorsement arrangement with Andy Roddick when the current contract expires at the end of this month.

This announcement was not unexpected. Trade sources tell Daily Tennis that Roddick’s representatives are seeking a huge amount of money for his endorsement. So much, in fact, that both Reebok and Nike are not likely to step forward and pay the requested amount.

Now that Reebok has decided not to proceed with Roddick, it will likely be in a position to negotiate an endorsement contract with Venus Williams, whose endorsement contract with Reebok expired last year.

Speculation about Roddick’s contract is now centering on Lacoste as the likely suitor.

Reebok International Ltd. on Friday dropped tennis star Andy Roddick of Austin as a spokesman for its athletic shoes, apparel and accessories.

The Reebok-Roddick relationship dates back to May 2000. But effective May 1, Roddick no longer will endorse Reebok products.

"Throughout our relationship, Andy has always been a loyal ambassador for the brand and has continuously proven himself to be a player capable of bringing intense energy and excitement back into the sport of tennis, with a talent and charisma to forever change the game," Reebok (NYSE: RBK), based in Canton, Mass., says in a statement.

"As our contract came to a close, and after carefully considering what is in the best interest of our business, Reebok has elected to not continue this partnership."

A representative of Washington, D.C.-based SFX Sports Group Inc., which manages Roddick's career, couldn't be reached for comment.

no, she still wears their clothers because she likes it, she has some kind of deal with them but as far as having her own line like she did back in 99 2000 i dont think so. Maybe with the new deal she can have her own stuff into court and not something Vaidisova will wear too!

hmm, maybe that explains so why Venus hasn't been very adventurous with her tennis wardrobe this year if her contract has run out with Reebok. I hope she stays with them, they can be quite inventive and unique with their style.

Those williams girls are something else...talking about loyality to their employees. The have had Kerri Brookes, Their Lawyer, coaches, Carlos..everyone around them they hang onto....truly amazing when they trust someone they do not let go of them. I am not surprise that Venus will still wear Reeboks even if she does not get another contract with them.

I kinda like her gold outfit dress from 2000. It was really nice on her and tight. It made her look flexible and gracious on court. I think it Maria's current one piece was influenced by that dress. No need to jump on me, it is just an observation.

What's going on at Reebok? They're now devoid of all their stars. Other than Andy Roddick and Venus Williams, the company used to have Patrick Rafter, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Michael Chang on their books. Those are some very huge, internationally-popular players right there. With Rafter, Sanchez Vicario and Chang retired, you'd think the company would be doing well enough to pay for Roddick and Williams to endorse their products. The amount of exposure those two gave Reebok over the last seven years was unimagineable.

Reebok used both of them, now that Venus and Andy are struggling they want to throw them away like yesterday's trash.
