View Full Version : Should We Have A Longer Grass Season?

I think yes for 3 reasons:

would shorten the hard court stretch, even by a couple of weeks, and thus hopefully have some effect in reducing injuries caused by an unforgiving surface

encouarge more creativity from players at all levels of the game, as it's difficult to win on grass by doing the same thing over and over again. Even the big girls start to serve and volley at wimbledon

and most importantly it would shake yup the rankings no end. I can think of a good dozen brits, (and several other players) who could of gone from journeywoman on the challenger circuit to top 100 players with a bit mroe grass court matches.

in fairness, the grass season has actually been extended by a week this year. The itf have put in a 10k in Oxford during the first week of the french open. hurrah.

oh and there are 3 events coming up in japan (one 25k and two 50k's) which are being played on artificial grass, so i guess they kinda count too.

LOL@ adding a 10k to make the grass season a bit longer :rolls:
got to remember Felixstowe is back as a 25k this yr too  ;)

It would be good to see more grass matches, get rid of WWT :o  (for part time mickey mouse/prima donna players)
move Wimbledon back 2-3 weeks.

that way you wouldnt need to kill off any US tourns

absolutely. cut down the hardcourt season. grass at 6 or 7 weeks would do everyones body some good, but we're too cheap to pay for that. :o

Definately. Rather have the Wimbly or grass courts of old. No slowing down or make the balls heavier. Grass should remain grass, and it gives a fairer ranking. Esp. in men's tennis in the past no lack of fast courts specialists in the top 20. Same goes for Indoors mainly be played on carpet. Even wouldn't mind indoor tournaments on a wooden surface.

yes please, the grass season is too short !!

Pdm1987
Apr 15th, 2005, 08:18 PM
yes it should be longer serve and volley might be more widely used then :)

maybe a petition should be created and sent to the WTA, wouldn't work, but something is better than nothing

Either NO grass anymore or an exntended season (which I would like), but I see Wimbledon being the only tournament on grass in a few years and this is just not acceptable!

But the current solution is so bad. :( But it'S hard to find venues, too.

They keep talking about separating Wimbledon and RG, but nothing ever happens!

I would like to see the hard court season shortened too - to prevent injuries.

Yes, I agree.

The schedule makes very little sense as it is.

While we're at it, let's also get rid of all of the out-of-season clay-court tournaments that crop up like weeds around the calendar. Let the Grand Slams dictate the surface season, with the YEC being the culmination of the indoor/carpet season. Move the AO to the end of the spring hard-court season, rather than being in the middle of it. Give the whole calendar some symmetry, rather than giving it the impression of barely-controlled chaos.

I think they should add a masters series event on grass, lengthen the season, and even it up.... there are so many clay events........

and, yes, ban WTT. It is worse than exhibition tennis.

Apr 15th, 2005, 11:31 PM
I agree, but the problem is America is a larger tennis market than England. For example, look at how much money the summer hard court stretch offers. But I agree there should be 1 - 2 more weeks of grass and there should DEFINITATELY be one tier 1 grass tournament.

There could be a grass event in the states at the Hall of Fame, or in Houston a tournie in Ireland, and in Halle, Germany.

PaulieM
Apr 15th, 2005, 11:47 PM
yes they should make the grass season longer

Andy T
Apr 16th, 2005, 06:32 AM
Yes! Maybe if Indian Wells disappears (or becomes a one week event) there will be some space created for an extra week between RG and Wimbledon. I think another key advantage of extending the Grass Court season is quite simply to give the women more time and incentive to adjust their game (and thereby develop it) to grass. A tier one on grass would be a great idea but even another tier two to go along with Eastbourne - would be good.

Should We Have A Longer Grass Season?

But if you let the grass grow much longer, the ball won't bounce on it.

Prizeidiot
Apr 16th, 2005, 06:55 AM
Yep, easier on the bones, matches are faster, so less fatigue. Plus all the tradition. Grass is a fantastic surface and there should be more of it. And make the courts faster. No one can consistently serve volley even on grass anymore without getting destroyed.

Apr 16th, 2005, 06:59 AM
Hell yes. We need more Grass court tournaments.

Monica_Rules

Definatly should be longer by a week or 2 at least!

jonny84
Apr 16th, 2005, 12:33 PM
Definitley - the grass court season is only for four weeks.

I think add at least one more week in between the French and Wimbledon - maybe even create a Tier I grass court event in between Birmingham and Eastbourne - somewhere in Europe maybe.

Nope, its a horrible surface. Ace and volley fest, boring tennis.

*puts into computer*

Computer say no

Actually, I think it's about time they did something about it. Adding 1 or 2 weeks would be a bloomin' good idea because it gives a lot more players a chance to practice on a surface they rarely get a hance to play on at the top level. Two whole weeks to practice between Clay and Grass. Wow. With this Rocher you are spoiling us! :D

Two witty remarks in one post from me. Must be a good day! Any comedy from me is usually a bonus :P

A longer grass season would be great! Grass is such a fun surface to see players play on because it just looks so cool with the green grass and the ball zipping across the courts. Grass looks so civilized and just :bounce:

UMM but it wouldn't be. Very few players no how to volley, let alone hit aces. If anything, the women of today need to learn how to play on grass.

but that would mean two weeks of tournies has to go........which ones should they be? thats a tough decision to have to make

lindsay and venus play stanford

they usually do well on grass

i think getting rid of paris indoors and antwerp would be better.

2 players dont make the whole tour
the tour is bigger than anyone.
and those two wont be around for more than a couple of yrs at max.

The Only time the tour is in Sleep Mode is after Wimbledon
when there is a dead week or so with a Tier V in Europe.

Also last 2-3 yrs there's been an extra week between Wimbledon and US Open due to Calendar alignment. (will change again soon)

But if you let the grass grow much longer, the ball won't bounce on it.

A longer-grass season as opposed to a longer grass-season!:haha:

I'm all in favour of a longer grasscourt-season, as it's ridiculous that the French Open and Wimbledon are so close together, and on the two most dissimilar surfaces they play on.

However, to achieve this, they must bring the French Open forward rather than moving Wimbledon back. The dates of Wimbledon (the fortnight always includes 26th June - 3rd July) are sacrosanct - as much a part of the tradition of Wimbledon as the grass-courts, the ivy, the strawberries, the royalty and the predominately-white clothing-rule!

I would suggest axing the American green-clay leg of the tour (Amelia Island and Charleston) in order to bring the French Open forward, and having two more weeks of grasscourt-tournaments when the French Open is now.
