View Full Version : Venus and Serena: never acknowledge opponents for loss

The sisters make me sick. All their post interviews after they have lost blame something else other than oppenents' play. They've always said they were raised well but too bad they weren't instilled humility and other characteristics of a true champion.

Until I see a match where
1-A player hits more winners than Venus
and
2-Hits more UFE than Venus

and still beats her, then and only then will some actually beat her. The fact is, in her losses she still hits more winners and more errors than the "victor", so she is basically beating herself.

i agree for the most part they will not acknowledge their opponents, but very few of the top ten will(lindsay/molik are pretty good)

venus does acknowledge her opponents more than serena. I would say in 95% of serena's losses she has blamed something other than her opponents play on her loss

The sisters usually don't credit OR discredit their opponents.

They mearly assess the loss from their standpoint. Focusing on their OWN errors, play and missed opportunities, they never say their opponents played bad at all....they just concentrate on themselves.

The day they lie I think these posts will be justified. The day Venus or Serena says "I made all the mistakes, a bunch of errors" when they DIDN't then the post would have a point, but truth is, everttime they say those things, they are correct.

At least they dont directly put down other players, like what some other top players do
All they do is talk about their own games. They usually do say the opponent played well. That's what you'd see if you actually read the interviews instead of reading negative media articles.

 I like you Dallas, but that is pure BS. Venus gets beaten by her opponent because they make less errors, and can play consistantly. That does not mean Venus beats herself, and you are not giving credit to her opponents or their games.

the most idiotic quote I have ever read....ever.... the fact is that when someone losses a match, they did not beat themselves. It is not possible in the realm of sport. You play like shit and you lose that still means you got beat by your opponent!!!!

does any one ever say that Jcap beat herself when she loses. no , they just say she got her ass kicked and played like crap. venus and serena have started a dangerous trend in tennis to not give full credit and just say they beat themselves or that they were not even on the tennis court. Venus has been using the " i beat myself" since she came back last january.

frankly it is frustrating to hear the same story week after week when Venus loses to an opponent ranked lower than her or higher for that matter

Exactly, Venus is self-destructing therefore she is beating herself. No one ever said letting Venus self-destruct was not a smart move, but when that happens there's not much you can say about their opponents except that they were good enough to keep the ball in play.

Venus' natural game is to be aggressive and go for her shots, when she isn't aggressive and looking to move forward she makes alot of errors which is what she did yesterday. Though yesterday she played one of the worst matches I've ever seen her play.

GoDominique
Apr 15th, 2005, 05:23 PM
You know, there are different ways to "keep the ball in play".

And Golovin is pretty darn good at it. She hits deep and long, mixed with quite a few winners and also nice passing-shots.

And with that she BEATS Venus fair and square, because Venus is just not able to outhit her. She is not good enough, period.

Knizzle
Apr 15th, 2005, 05:25 PM
By returning a lot of balls. Call Aranxta she'll explain it to you.

Your opponent still has to make that mistake on their OWN. You aren't making them make a UFE you're hoping they make one. Giving them another chance to, but not MAKING them. Do you understand that?

No, if you're good enough you're making them. Because you'll have scouted them out, you'll know what their weaknesses are, you know what kind of balls they're most susceptible to, and by counter-punching in such a way that you're not JUST retrieving but actively probing your opponent's mental and technical weaknesses, you are MAKING their game disintegrate.

Dear, tennis players are human beings, not machines.
Therefore, all players who play aggressive will have unforced errors.

Unforced errors are a part of Venus' game, it has always been like that.
It's just about the W/UE ratio.

Besides, nowadays if you play certain shots you can be pretty confident that Venus won't be able to return them. :tape:

The counterpunching player might just be having an off day - a step slow, maybe, or making uncharacteristic errors of her own. Not playing her game (which is 'making the power player make errors') as well as she could.

Yes of course I realize this GoDom, play the FH wait for errors, it's definitely a great play against Venus now cause her FH is a mess, but the same things were tried against Venus from 1999-2003 and they didn't work. Even last week you saw it in the Venus vs LD match. LD was hitting to the FH in the first set and a half and she wasn't getting any errors from there and since she couldn't get UFE's she had nothing to do, but wait until Venus started making mistakes. My question to you and others is why couldn't LD MAKE Venus make those mistakes in the entire match?? If a player can be made to make mistakes by there opponent just by keeping the ball in play towards their weakness why did Venus win anything with her pitiful FH??

:worship: And anyway, when I think of some of the things that have been said about said players, Venus and Serena "dominating" isn't good, tag teaming to take one of them out, their father dictates who wins, etc, I don't care what they say or don't about their opponents.

I was making the point that when you have a classic power player vs strategist/counterpuncher match-up, it's just not true to claim that the power player dictates the outcome. When the strategist/counterpuncher beats the power player, people tend to overly focus on the power player's errors, without considering exactly how the counterpuncher goaded her into making them. However, when the power player beats the counterpuncher, you hardly ever hear about the ways in which the counterpuncher might have been off her game.

The difference today is that people KNOW Venus is vulnerable.

Yes, if Venus plays well she's still hard to beat, but nowadays her opponents don't panic or give up if it happens, they know their chance will come.
Golovin knew that if she keeps playing her game, she has a good chance to win.

It's just too easy to say that Venus beats herself. Actually it's an insult to her intelligence because how can you beat yourself week in week out without doing anything about it?

Knizzle
Apr 15th, 2005, 05:47 PM
You're playing with words. "Giving another chance" to a player is called being consistant, and if you construct well your points, hit deep balls, yada yada yada, your opponent will be more likely to hit errors, forced or unforced. Please don't tell me Venus making mistakes just happened randomly, without any reason. When you play against someone who's good, you feel the need to hit better shots, you're more tight, so you make more mistakes.

I mean, it's not a coincidence Venus is being erratic against a player ranked in the top 40 and would win easily if she would play against someone ranked 700. You play bad because the person in front of you forces you to play bad.

This will sound arrogant and rude and you can say what you want, but Golovin is not good enough to pressure Venus into making mistakes, Davenport?? yes of course, but not Golovin. Seriously.

It's a combinaison of factors, maybe Venus did play a crappy match, but it doesn't change the fact that Golovin was also partly responsible for Venus erratic play.

I wasn't saying Tati didn't do anything, like I said she kept the ball to the FH and got the errors she needed which was smart, maybe if she was hitting to the BH things would have been different, but Venus wasn't making too many BH's either. :o

But all I was saying is that those unforced errors aren't coming out of nowhere, they are the consequences of playing against someone who's good enough. If Venus would play against someone ranked 1000, she wouldn't do so many unforced errors because she would play differently knowing her opponent is not that good.

Exactly! The better the opponent, the more risks the player will have to take. And a riskier game means more UEs!

Because they are right..half of the time they loose its because of their unforced errors. The Williams Sisters are the best players on the tour at their best...they proved that from 2000-2003...when they were 100% tennis. Now that they have other things going for the them, they dont play or practice as much as they use to...so their game has stepped down from where they were the previous years. To me the other players on the tour are more solid and consistent because they play more, but they still do not have the talent the Venus and Serena has....I will go to the grave on that!

It's the only way they seem to get some joy in their miserable unfulfilled lives. Well they can gloat over the WS losses as much as they want, because they and their real fans couldn't care less about that. They are living it up as two beautiful well rounded women who are in the prime of their lives, and still are a threat to the women's tour. Why do you think you guys can't stop talking about them, and why people act like they won a slam or something whenever they beat a WS, it only confirms the truth that they are still the measure in women's tennis today.

Yes, Venus is in a little slump but she is improving and her day will come again, as for Serena she is still a major threat out there, with the stress on major :p.

To say that the WS don't give credit to their opponents is the same as saying that Nysaga has green dots reputation .

I don't know if this has been posted yet (I didn't read all of the posts) but there was an interview with Venus a while ago (maybe 3-4+ years ago) where she basically said that there were only a handful of loses in her career where she was outplayed. The only loss I remember her talking about was to Van Roost in the late 90's I think. So basically all of her other loses she was not outplayed.

Does anyone else remember this???

"I wasn't sure how Serena would react after that loss, but Serena Williams was the epitome of grace and class after that absolute atrocious treatment she recieved in that semifinal. There's not too many players who would have showed that much class and courage after a match like that."

-Mary Carillo after 2003 French Open semifinal

"She congratulated me and gave me a couple kisses at the net."

-Jennifer Capriati after defeating Serena Williams at 2004 French Open quarterfinal.

"Serena said great job at the net and gave me a pat on the back. I'm sure it was hard from her being defending champion and all."

-Lindsay Davenport after defeating Serena Williams in 2000 US Open.

"I think she took the loss great and I thought it was nice for her to congratulate me after the trophy ceremony. She was very talkative today even before the match. But that's just her you know.

Lindsay Davenport after defeating Serena Williams at 2004 JP Morgan Chase.

"I don't remember exactly what she said but she gave me some words of encouragement and congratulated me."

The sisters make me sick. All their post interviews after they have lost blame something else other than oppenents' play. They've always said they were raised well but too bad they weren't instilled humility and other characteristics of a true champion.Hey nysaga! Look over there...!! http://deephousepage.com/smilies/kickbut.gif

She even had great things to say just last week about Silvia Farina Elia after she had to retire in that match.

Surprised this thread hasn't been closed yet.
