That is not confirmed yet.
I guess today during QF on Eurosport, we might get confirmation!
It was announced yesterday during Venus-Tanya match!
Official reason - shoulder injury!

BTW, I got the info from saab95! :worship:

That is very unusual, any reasons Lady?

On the tennisreporters website, it has another artcile that talks about Dementieva saying she does not think Sharapova will play for Russia. But as it is a members article and could not read it, I am not sure if it is based on the current tie in Italy or forever.

Russia could be a Fed Cup leader, however the tension and competitiveness at the very elite is crazy between them. Hopefully Nastya is not injured and she is doing it for rest.

rumours
If it's true so I think it's because of her poor results recently

I think her shoulder injury was mentioned as an official reason!
The guy that is in Fed Cup comitee is Russian ES comentator so he surely will comment on that, during today's match!
(In fact, I think he'll talk about that more, then about actual match ;) )

This what the tennisreporters have said.

Dementieva doesn't expect Sharapova to play for Russia
BTW: Dementieva told TR.net on Thursday that she doesn't expect Maria Sharapova to ever play Fed Cup for Russia. Sharapova declined to play for the Russian team that will face Italy next week, saying she was worn down. Dementieva is on the squad with Anastasia Myskina (who she said is having "personal problems"), Elena Bovina and Dinara Safina.
"I didn't think that she's ever going to play for Russia," Dementieva said. "I never thought she'd play for Russia. But I don't think it's about [not wanting to play on the same team with] Myskina."

Thanks for the info.

Poor Nastya, a bum shoulder and personal problems. A break is what she needs, maybe after RG she could take a break?

Glad to know Elena and Nastya are still close.

Yep and glad to see that Elena is spreading that fact around...what is it with tennis players "accidently" telling private stuff? I think it was Petrova who told everyone last year that Nastya was in a new relationship and now Elena  ;)

However...no matter if this rumour is true or not, I wish Nastya all the best

It's already is duscussed as a given fact on Russian forum, so it's almost 100% true.

Here I prefer til I have some source! ;)

I'd like to give credit to Elena and Nastya's friendship and say that Elena probably defended Nastya's current form by providing an 'extra' detail. If she'd specfically revealed what the personal problems were, that would have been wrong.

And to be honest, with a girl like Nastya, you can believe that off court events may have a greater impact on her than someone like Elena. Nastya is very emotional.

This is not too bad for the team, with Myskina's recent form.

Very likely, yes. She already had a small tear last year and it certainly is even worse now, plus her shoulderblade thing...not good at all

What's interesting is that Tarpischev wouldn't let Lena D. play last year.
And Lena has to carry this team past Italy.

Yeah Vera does seem to be a strange choice - she's a good player but you would have thought some other of the many Russians would have been head hunted before.

Lemonskin.

Safina, Kirilenko too

I think the Lenas will be playing. They've both won Fed Cup matches, and they played doubles together recently.

Wow, Elena D is definitely in charge. Tarpischev needs her now more than she needs him. What a funny thing life can be :)

Good luck Elena (and Russia).

i think this is a good move by nastya because she should not be playing with this injury, and even if she did in the slump she is now there are no guarantees she would win anyway....rest up, fix the shoulder/personal problems and come back stronger than ever!

Poor Myskina.

Russia could lose this tie now. I don't understand why they would select Douchevina over Petrova, Likhovtseva, or Linetskaya.

Does this mean she is not playing the French? The FO is still a long way away.
Russia has an incredibly deep team.
They don't bring Myskina, Sharapova and Kuznetsova, who are defending majors this year.
But Lena D. is #5. And Lena B. is top 15.

What is interesting is that last year Tarpischev kept loyal to the team that got Russia through the first round and kept faith with them for the rest of the tournament.

That meant no lena d or maria s, despite their great form last year. He got lucky that Myskina and for most of the year Vera Z & Svetlana played really well and they won the trophy. :)

But this Russian team, though probably good enough (thanks to the 2 Lenas) to beat Italy, is nowhere near as strong as last year; and at least 2 player off being Russia's best team (imo: Lena D; Lena B; with Sharapova; & Kuznetsova/Myskina depending on form).

What has really suprised me is that many of the back up choices Petrova/Zvonerava/Linetskaya/Kirilenko/Likhovtseva are also missing  making the team look really weak and short of depth.

If Tarpischev decides to be loyal to this team I can't see anyway that Russia will retain the Fed Cup with the strong looking French/American teams in the tournament.

Well, it's only a month away, and a "shoulder injury" sounds serious.

Anastasia has a rotator cuff problem. But she doesn't want surgery.
I wouldn't be surprised if she trains up to RG, and skips all the red clay tournaments before it.
She only won one match on clay before RG last year.

This is really disappointing news, someone I think Nastya's pulling out is more than just shoulder problems, maybe Elena is right... but who knows.
But now it's up to Elena to lead the Russian team against the Italians :yeah:
