Hi all,

I was just curious as to how Ashley Harkleroad hits her forehand. Watching on TV it looks as though she gets quite a bit of topspin on her forehand and has a full western grip. But it's really hard to tell on TV, so for those that have seen her play live. Is she usually aggressive or a counter-puncher and does she get alot of top-spin on her groudies or is it more power? Thanks :)

I've only see her play once, and it was last year against Venus, but she used a lot of tospin.

If Ashley had stayed with tennis, wouldn't she had been just as successful as Maria right now. They are so similar in style and looks. It was just sickening. I guess when she got married, her stock went down with sponsors and media alike.

I really don't think they ought to be compared. Ashley was overhyped imo. She's a solid counterpuncher and had some great wins on clay but her game isn't good enough on fast courts to make her anywhere near as successful as Maria. No weapons and not the best movement would've really prevented her from ever being top 20.

Ashley wasn't extremely aggressive, like Maria. Also, her serve isn't as good, and her ground strokes aren't as hard and forceful.

Ashley hits her forehand with a lot of topspin, somewhat in the manner of Anke Huber. Extreme western. Unless she's changed it recently....

I agree that she was overhyped. They built her up to be the next great American player, but it was just a dissappointment. After her decent FO a few years ago, I thought she'd continue to improve but injuries & the fact that the other young players were much better halted her rise.

She didn't really seem to have any weapons, other than consitency. I don't think u can compare her game to Maria's b/c Maria does everything MUCH better. Ashley's serve was a liability & the player's didn't mind to play her b/c she didn't go for her shots. IF she would go for her shots she might have been/ or might still be successful. She was simply happy to get the ball back & hope for an error.
