Carlos Moya and Amelie Mauresmo will defend their 2004 titles in this year’s Telecom Italia Masters. The Tournament will take place at Rome’s Foro Italico from 1st to 15th May. Men will play in the first week of the Event, women in the second week.
50 out of the first 54 top players in the Indesit ATP ranking will be competing. Leyton Hewitt (toe injury) Taylor Dent (ankle) and Vincent Spadea (shoulder) withdraw from men's tournament. Chanda Rubin withdraw from women's tournament.
More than 100,000 spectators came to watch tennis at the Foro Italico during the 2004 event - a 33% increase on previous year. Despite the rain, tournament organisers announced that the final attendance figure - 102,530 – has been the highest turnout since 2000. The success was put down in part to the policy of reducing ticket prices. "Kids` day" and "Ladies` day" events with free entrance also proved to be a big success. "Despite the ticket prices reductions we have grossed 50,000 euros more than in 2003," said tournament president Angelo Binaghi, "from €1,600,000 to €1,650,000." Corprate sponsorship was down slightly on last year, though losses were reduced despite the additional cost of the Delta Tour of Champions. "We are hoping to break even in 2005," said Mr Binaghi. Most Masters series torunaments, with the exception of Miami, lose money, he pointed out.
Telecom Italia will be the Tournament title sponsor for the third year in a row.

Dementieva, Serena and Molik are not playing in Berlin this week due to injuries, It would be awful to see them pull out of this tournament too.

Serena will play, she has confirmed it, she usually ALWAYs plays this tournament before the french.

She lost last year in the semi's 4-6 4-6 even tho she had clear opportunities in both sets to close them out before Jennifer. Oh well, hopefully she will win this year!
