I knew it was going to be tough, I knew I would cry, but I'm a total wreck :sobbing: He's in my arms right now and he's really really close to dying. I can feel him, he's leaving... and I just don't wanna let go :sobbing:

Black and white cat. Really beautiful. He's only 10yo, but he's got diabetes. and it would cost like thousands of bucks to cure him and buy the medicine for the rest of his life. And we can't afford it  So I'm just trying to help him not suffer until it's over.

I have 5 cats who are just as much a family to me as my sisters etc and will be distraught when they go.

We briefly had 6 cats when we took in a stray a few years ago, but she died from Leukaemia and i balled my eyes out (amidst comments from others that i really was 'human' after all)

Animals give unconditional love, they don't ask for money, good looks, big breasts/penis and lifes luxuries.

Food, shelter and love is all they want and it's only natural to feel down when they die/are close to death, they can be more worthy than humans.

Just make the final times happy ones.

I cried heaps when my dog was put down but didn't weep a tear when my Grand Dad died, it's all about how close you are to them...

I recently lost a pet...so I share and emphathize with how you are feeling.
Make your pet comfortable and don't be afraid to have your vet end your cats suffering a little early...it is the greatest final gift you could give your pet.
Best wishes....

yes. this is extremely true.
recently i have a cousin who died. i was very close to him. the thing is that i'm in australia and i was in class when he died. my mom called my friend to tell me the news cuz i had turned off my phone. when liz (my friend) came to me she told me that my mom called and had "some bad news for you". my first thought was "oh god, no. please dont let it be amber or her darling puppies". of course, i was just as crushed when she told me that my cuz had died. later when we talked i told her what my first thought was and a few of my friends were like wtf and told me "veronica, but that cant be as bad as losing a human". but its the same really. they dont get it. nobody else will get it unless they are as big as animal love as i am.

and Xavic, i'm terribly sorry for your loss. it must hurt like hell and well, it hurts.

:bigcry: Oh my god I feel soo sorry for you! I just don't want to think about my 10 year old labrador girl Sacha dying. She means soo much to me and comforts me when I'm upset. I just don't know what I would do without her :bigcry:

I can still get teary-eyed about Griffin, and we lost her in December. (of course, thinking about her can still make me laugh or smile, too :) ) I don't know if it's that they're dependent on us, or that we allow ourselves to drop our guard with them in a way we can't/don't with people.

I wish your little friend a peaceful end, and I wish you the strength to help him get there. He's a lucky kitty to have someone who loves him so much.

IS ur cat getting put down? don't worry.. cry a lot, u feel a lot better afterwards...... i recently "lost" my 1 y/o cat who was really special to me, i would talk to him and sleep in the same bed with him. By lost i mean, he ran away, while my mum was taking him to the vet for a booster, he's really shy and nervous around new places and he got scared and ran away. We put up signs and looked for forever for him but we still can't find him. He's been gone since the 23rd of Feb, and i'm still grieving. I never knew losing a pet would be that hard either.. But consider yourself lucky if ur cat gets put down, because you know his fate... i wonder a LOT about whether my cat is alive or not, happy or not.. .etc...... u and ur cat will be in my prayers

Thanks to everyone for their nice words of support. I don't usually talk about things too personnal here, but I think I needed your support. Pistache was put to sleep about half an hour ago and even if I thought I wasn't gonna be able to handle it, I stayed with him until it was over. My mom and sis were with me and we kissed him and petted him to sleep. He went peacefully and I hope he'll have as much fun up there as he did here. I'll miss him forever and I know I'll cry a lot in the next days (I'm bawling right now ;) ), but I know he won't suffer anymore.

Thanks especially to bionic71. What you said about that final gift made me think a lot and I think that's what we did. We gave him a final gift, a final thanks for all the love he gave us over the years. Thanks again to everyone. I'll goodrep you guys in the next days... Now I just wanna cry  But thank you :)

I'm so sorry! I just went through this, also, and it feels as though your heart is completely ripped out!

Like bionic said, you gave your cat the final gift of dying peacefully instead of suffering. To me that is the most selfless thing you can do. Your cat died knowing you adored him and I'm sure your being there as he made his transition was very comforting.

I try to think of all the great times I had with Darian and I'm thankful for the 14 years I had with him.

Peace be with you Xavik

My cat was 19 years old, had been run over by a car 3 times during her life, and had cancer. The cancer was making her suffer, so I had to put her to sleep. I couldn't stand to hear meow in pain. I cried like a big baby, so I understand.

I'll think good thoughts for you!

 My sympathy to you and your family. I used to have a great cat, and
he had diabetes too. In fact, after he was diagnosed, I went the insulin
route--had to give him daily injections. I hated it at first, but kitty and I
got used to it after a while. He lived 7 more years, but he tended to have
a lot of health problems. I loved him so much, I haven't been able to have
another cat since, and thats about 10 years now. Thomas was about 10
when he died as well (don't really know his true age, since he was an
abandoned pussy cat, and the vet was guessing). I still miss him....

PS--I put my baby to sleep, too...I must have cried a bucket of tears.

Hey Xavik, my condolences... I know how it feels, I had to put my last cat to sleep as well. But it's the best thing you can do for the poor animal when they can't really be cured unless you pay a fortune (and then you are not sure they will make it).
Big  to you.
