AMELIA ISLAND, Florida (Reuters) - World number one Lindsay Davenport (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/tennis/nm/sp_nm/wta_amelia_dc/14820893/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Lindsay%20Davenport%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw) dug deep to beat a resurgent Venus Williams (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/tennis/nm/sp_nm/wta_amelia_dc/14820893/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Venus%20Williams%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw) 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semifinals of the Amelia Island Championship Friday. The defending champion and top seed looked on her way out as she was blitzed in the first set but she rallied to secure victory and take her place in the last four.

"She definitely played well in the first set," Davenport said. "I got a bit lucky in the second, I was down 15-40 a couple of times and managed to pull out two sets without really playing that well."

For 25 minutes it was vintage Venus.

Full of confidence after her win over Serena on her way to the semi-finals in Miami last week, Venus left Davenport reeling with a succession of winners.

The fifth seed had completed a rain-delayed win over Polish qualifier Marta Domachowska (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/tennis/nm/sp_nm/wta_amelia_dc/14820893/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Marta%20Domachowska%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw) earlier Friday, but it did not seem to affect her as she romped through the opening set.

As the second set wore on, Venus began to make mistakes and Davenport leveled the match and then broke to lead 3-2 in the decider.

Venus had Davenport at 0-40 on her serve in the eighth game but the world number one held her nerve and served out two games later to seal victory.

"I think I just made mistakes at the wrong time," Venus said. "I feel like I played well, it was one of my best matches this year, everything's getting better."

Congrats Lindsay, you deserve everything that comes your way.

Good luck Vee in your next tourney (FCC?)

It's good for Lindsay that she won without playing well. Considering who's left in the tournament I hope she wins the whole thing. Hopefully she can knock Petrova's awkward ass into the dirt.

Honestly....Venus is slowly but surely improving her game. And whatever she's doing, she needs to keep doing it. If she keeps this up, she'll be a huge favorite by Wimbledon.

Is it just me or has Venus put back on a little muscle? I was looking at her arms today, and they seem slightly bigger. I also think that her forhand is getting better, she just has to work on staying consistent with it.

Yes, her forehand is getting better and I think she's figured out how to counter the players who continually try to go to her forehand to break it down. She hits a forehand dtl and they are forced to hit to her backhand for a winner. She can't sustain the forehand for long rallys though, unfortunately though and sometimes in the match against Lindsay, she lost concentration and allowed Linds to dictate the ball continually to her forehand for a long rally until Venus hit it long or into the net.

Venus needs to just get back into the habit of doing things consistently over time, and at least rising to the occasion when it comes to crunch. As someone mentioned, by Wimby she should be back into 100%

I thought she played a much better match in Antwerp against Mauresmo, but whatever you say, Venus... :tape:
