View Full Version : Did Pam just say that Justine was a SUPRISE RG WINNER?

I love Pam, but that just makes no sense.

Justine is arguably the best clay court player out there.

 I wouldn't knwo if she said that. ;)
It was Ju's first GS, she had a rather tough draw, so maybe that's why Pam calls it a surprise . I was surprised Ju won a GS  ;)

I remember all the commentators saying Kim was the favourite just before the final, and I also remember jumping up and down shouting at them because to me, Justine was the CLEAR favourite. Given the total superiority of her clay court game, and all.

Justine was so far from a surprise winner, that year she and Serena were head and shoulders above the rest of the girls going into the tournament. I predicted her win from the start, anyway. :)

yea i understand Henin is good on clay, but base purely on quantitative grounds on their h2h, and the fact Kim is no slouch on clay either, she would have been my pick just by an inch. maybe it was my heart and not my head speaking

In some ways she was shap. I wouldn't have picked anyone but Serena to win RG.

 I knew a thread would be started about this. She said Iva & Mary were surprise winners.... then she paused and said that the FO was Justine's first major.

The imbalanced h2h was mostly due to the fact that Kim owned Justine early in their careers... but Justine had begun to clearly turn that round before RG, so I was pretty sure the mental block was no longer there. And I did always think that the mental aspect was the major factor preventing Justine from overtaking Kim decisively.

Woo, I was so right! Shoulda so put some money on some bets that year.

Serena was BIG favourite back then, then Venus, Kim, Justine came only 4th, so I agree, Justine was a surprise winner! :D

Justine's win was the greatest surprise ;) :D

Before that year, Justine was known as a choker...so Pam saying that wouldn't be a surprise in reference to Justine at that time.

Kim was by far the favourite in my books, she was higher ranked and had a better H2H.

Justine was a surprise winner because she beat Serena who was invincible at the time.

Surprise winner or clear favorite, who cares she won it that the only thing that matters :smoke:

i think it was clear that justine would be the winner. i mean, despite the incident in the semis, she was the one who had been playing better tennis. kim was playing really horribly throughout. i love kim, but she was playing badly.

and besides, justine had broken serena's unbeaten run at tournaments at charleston and she won it pretty easily (considering that it was serena) and she had beaten kim saving 3 matchpoints at berlin.

maybe she might not have been the overwhelming fave to get to the final but i think it was obvious she would win. especially after kim began developing choking issues.

that said, kim, girl, u better win RG this year.

Before RG she had won Charleston and Berlin, and had beaten Serena, Kim, Amelie and Monica. To say that she was a surprise winner is ridiculous.

Agreed, what a ridiculous statement. Majoli and Pierce were surprises. But after the clay court season she had had in 2003 and the confident wave she was riding, Henin-Hardenne was the second favorite behind Serena for the French Open, IMO.

Kim was by far the favourite in my books, she was higher ranked and had a better H2H.

But Henin-Hardenne had beaten her in their most recent meeting - the Berlin final and had proven to be better on clay. Not sure how Clijsters could have been considered a heavy favorite or favorite at all. Even, at best. But it doesn't really matter much now.

Mary wasn't the surprise winner. Justine did beat Serena at Family
Circle in 2003; but she was clearly at about 4th on the favorites
list- people doubted she could beat Serena at a GS after early 3 set matches from Patty and Jelena Kostanic, where as Serena and
Kim blew their early rounds.

Like I said earlier. Pam didn't say that Justine was a surprise winner. After she said that Iva and Mary were surprises she paused and then said that it's was Justine's first slam!
