Well all credit to both players, Serena is just too much of a player for Pierce these days, Mary's poor movement can only take her so far. Besides whenever in trouble all Serena needs to do is to tell her serve, hey buddy get your ass on court, cause mine is already here, and the story comes to an end pretty soon thereafter. At least Pierce didnt get too discouraged after not having taken advantage of her break points opportunities and made the 2nd set a respectable one.

13 ACES!! 53 WINNERS!! KEEE-RIST!!
Me thinks the Serena of old is returning. :bounce:

This is one aspect of Serena's game that has been missing for almost 2 years— Her ability to ace her way to a win. I would love to hear LDV's take on this aspect of Rena's game.
Seriously though, when Serena was at peak condition (end of 2001-mid 2003) 13 aces was a frequent stat that we all took for granted. Only now, am I realizing how much this played in Serena's past successes. Serena plays high-stakes tennis (as she did today), and when she does, it pays off big-time! What other player in history (I'd like to know) has done this as often? Were there any (ace queens) in the past, because none come to mind? In fact, that's going to be part of my new signature..."Serena: Queen Of Aces". :worship:

Mary must've played out of her mind today to get those great stats of hers. And I applaud http://deephousepage.com/smilies/clap.gif and bow :worship: to her fighting spirit out there today. She has definitely earned my respect.

The statistics on the website are ridiculous, do you really believe them? Razzano also had almost 50 winners in 2 sets against Sugyiama. This is more than a lot of players in 5 sets (have a look at Nadal's stats in the finals of Miami), it's just impossible!!

My take on it.

I never denied Serena's ability to hit aces. What I denied is the wisdom of thinking that any player can count on winning match after match with just aces and unreturnable serves.

As it turns out when it counted the most today, with 3 match points in the second set tiebreak against Farina-Elia, Serena did not produce an ace or unreturnable serve.

Not having watched the match that is all I will say.

Mary had her last great performance in 2000.
She is #27 in rankings today and 30 years old. Hasn't won anything for 5 years. Hasn't beaten a top 10 player on clay in the last 5 years.

Serena would have dispatched players like her some years ago. Sadly Serena's and Venus' best days are over. Their bodies can't bear their power game. Venus definitely never will win a slam again. And even with Serena there is a lot of doubt: Will there ever be a slam again where a young Russian chokes away a match and two Belgians don't compete? I don't think so ...

NOthing to be proud of, (by Mary's standards) but Mary did win a tournament on grass last year.. she has also had top ten wins on clay (Myskina at the Family Circle Cup in 2004 or 2003).
While I am not saying that Mary was in the zone yesterday, but she did play really well, so this counts as a good win for Serena. Over the hill or not, Mary is one of the biggest names on the tour, and a win over her on her fav surface is a good win. Please Cali, give it a rest!

Be quiet LDV if you didn't see those drop volleys, lob! and volleys in thight situations. By the way, S.Williams must have the best passing shot on the tour, just watching matches against N.Petrova in OZ this year and against Daniela in Dubai. Thos crosscourt passes were awesome, needs a lot of athletic ability!

I really don't understand this power game thing, V&S don't really hit any harder than many other nowadays, for example Daniela clearly hit harder in that Dubai match. Ana I. N.Petrova, Svetlana, Sania's forehand ;) etc. hit harder!
Like Serena's said she doesn't think she even hits that hard

My take on it.

I never denied Serena's ability to hit aces. What I denied is the wisdom of thinking that any player can count on winning match after match with just aces and unreturnable serves.

As it turns out when it counted the most today, with 3 match points in the second set tiebreak against Farina-Elia, Serena did not produce an ace or unreturnable serve.

Not having watched the match that is all I will say.

Of course you didn't watch it....otherwise you'd know that Serena already had an ankle-sprain by then......so she could barely move, let alone serve..

You know why the russian choked it? Because now she was EXPECTED to win. She had the higher ranking, etc.....it's easy to come out and perform when you are freshfaced and new, but obviously when you're the prey, rather than the hunter...it becomes another matter.

Belgians, Belgians....they have issues of their own to deal with....clock is ticking for both of them, one still has to win the first of anything and the other has to start reaching finals again, soooo...

it's easy to say they'll never win another slam. hell, people have been telling us that the Williams wont win a(nother) slam since before they went through puberty.

11 slams say they're wrong  btw Serena won the last slam played. mmmhmmm, a lot of doubt that she still has it.
