Five top ten players? That's a weirdly strong Tier III - especially on the eve of Roland Garros. Good for this new event, but I'd be surprised if half of them turn up.

I guarantee that at least a dozen will drop as most ofthem will put Strassbourg as no.1 option...

I doubt that Anna Smashnova will play as Turkey is a moslem country and all Isralies avoid playing on moslem's countires like Dubai, Bali, Qatar...

What do you think?

Not necessarily since Turkey isn't a state that relays on religion. I think the relationships between Turkey and Israel are quite good.
I would love to know where this entry list comes from. If I was Davenport, Myskina, Dementieva or Molik I would prefer Strasbourg over Istanbul because there it's the same climate as in Paris.
I don't see why the two RG finalists of 2004 would play the week before Paris because their schedule is Berlin and very likely Rome which would be 3 weeks in a row before the French Open

Players can have their names on more than one entry list. I believe its like two or three weeks in advance they have to make up their mind as to which tournament they're going to play. That's what those 1s and 2s mean on the official official entry list that the WTA Tour provides.

I don't think its that shocking that some of the top names are playing, only because this is a new event. Usually the debut of a new tournament tries to attract top players. For example Martina Hingis when Doha first appeared as a Tier III event.

I agree with you and am surprised they aren't committed to this tourney. After the others come back and tell them how much they enjoyed the tournament, city, and people, I believe more players will be ready to put Istanbul on their tournament schedule for the next year.
