Davenport advances to quarters, but rain delays Williams sisters

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. (AP) - Lindsay Davenport needed just 55 minutes to beat Kveta Peschke 6-2, 6-2, before rain postponed most of the afternoon matches Thursday at the Bausch & Lomb Championships.

No. 5 seed Venus Williams and Marta Domachowska were tied at one set each before the delay. They will finish their match Friday. The winner will face Davenport.

The match between second-seeded Serena Williams and former Bausch & Lomb champion Mary Pierce was also moved back a day to Friday.

Matches scheduled for Thursday evening included third-seeded Anastasia Myskina's against No. 15 Shinobu Asagoe. Rain was forecast in the area for most of the night.

Venus Williams lost the first set 6-3, but came back to take the second set 6-4. The players were tied at 30-30 in the first game of the third set when the rain came.

Davenport broke Peschke twice in her first three service games to take the first set in 30 minutes, before dropping the first two games of the second set.

She then used a variety of forehand and backhand winners, limiting Peschke to just nine total points the rest of the match in winning the final six games of the set.

"Sometimes I do that," Davenport said about her slow start in the second set. "I seem to get not as concentrated in the beginning of that set. But I broke right back and didn't make much of an issue of it."

In the only other match completed Thursday, sixth-seeded Vera Zvonaeva beat ninth-seeded Elena Likhovtseva 6-4, 6-4.

I hope there's no rain tomorrow, but the forecast is for scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. I'm kinda glad these matches get pushed back till tomorrow because I'll be there for the day and night session! But I hope they still play the quarterfinals! I wanna see Lindsay/Venus, if Venus makes it...

I heard the same thing regarding the rain.

I think Venus/Marta will start play at 10:00 AM, then the winner (which I think will be Venus as she will have tonight to retool her game) will probably play Lindsay tomorrow night.

I don't think that's fair. Can't they push the tournament to an extra day?

really...:p

but seriously I'm at the top end of this storm and the wind is treacherous...it was moving my car all over the road. I can just imagine what it's like down there with heavy humidity and light drizzle and that wind.

They may have to if rain disrupts play the next two days.

If they have to play on Monday, this would not affect players like Venus and Lindsay, who will have a first round bye. The only people who would be affected are those who have to play qualifying and first round matches on Monday.

Who's serving at 30 all in the third set? Venus should see this rain delay as an opportunity to clean up her game and dominate the rest of the match.

Hope she can pull herself together and take this match. I want a Vee/ Lindsay qtr final. Maybe the rain is just what she needed to regroup.;)

Davenport Reaches QF on Wet Day at Amelia Island

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - As expected, afternoon rain showers put a damper on third round action at the Bausch & Lomb Championships on Thursday.
Just two singles matches were completed before strong thunderstorms rolled across Florida, sending the players into the lockerroom to wait out a lengthy weather delay.

With overcast skies, world No.1 Lindsay Davenport and No.6 seed Vera Zvonareva were able to reach the quarterfinals before the skies darkened over Amelia Island.

Davenport dropped just four games in a 62 62 victory against Czech qualifier Kveta Peschke. The defending Amelia Island champion is looking for her third title at the event and said her second match of the week was much improved over her on-court appearance this week.

"I felt I made a lot of improvements from Tuesday night and that's what you have to do as the tournament goes on, keep improving what you're not doing your best," Davenport said.

The top seed could next face No.5 Venus Williams, who was tied with Polish qualifier Marta Domachowska, 36 64 when rain forced the two players off the court during the first game of the third set. Their match will resume on Friday.

Zvonareva also moved through to the final eight in straight sets, defeating countrywoman and No.9 seed Elena Likhovtseva, 64 64. Her quarterfinal opponent will be the winner of Thursday's other rain-interrupted match between No.13 seed Ai Sugiyama and Virginie Razzano. Razzano had won the first set 6-4, while Sugiyama was leading 3-1 in a second set tie-break.

Two matches, featuring No.2 seed Serena Williams and No.14 Mary Pierce, along with No.8 Patty Schnyder against No.12 Silvia Farina Elia were postponed until Friday, while two other matches were still on the schedule late in the day to be played.

When action resumes, No.3 seed Anastasia Myskina is still scheduled to face No.15 Shinobu Asagoe on Thursday evening, while No.7 Nadia Petrova is set to face No.11 seed Jelena Jankovic.

yeah, right;)

Hmmm. Venus will have to beat a Polish women during the Pope's funeral procession. Very Interesting. Marta is playing good. She's taking more chances which is why she has more UE. Venus seems to be a little off her game. Marta is playing with the heart and soul of a women who wants to show her care for the deceased pope by using his death as a tool to win. She might even play better tommorrow but we'll see.

Nothing in life is a guranteer but I assure you shes not going to make the same silly errors she made today and now that she knows her oppenents game she wil adjust and most likly win very quickly.

I wonder if Venus was just having an off day, or Domachowska an 'on' day, or if Domachowska was getting fatigued.

From the enormous ammount of Unforced Errors, I'd say Venus was having a terrible day. I don't know anything about Marta's usual #s but I expect that she is also playing sloppy considering there are 100+ UFEs in this match in 2 sets!!!
