Tevin Campell - Get Ready

I think you mean I'm Ready. :) Yeah, that's a killer album. Kinda up there with Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel album, imo.

I think Jon B's They don't know radio remix is one of the best songs of alltime let alone the '92 to '98 era.

I liked MC Lyte's missy elliot remix of Cold Rock a Party record off the top of my head.

Come to think of it, I may just be the only person outside of a radio station that has the actual single of the radio remix, and I got it by pure luck.

IMO, the mid-late 80s and the rest of the 90s were the height of RnB. It was classy. I don't like to use that word, since it's a tired old cliche, but I really think RnB songs back then carried better tunes and productions than the ones today, which are more of a mix between Dance and RnB or Hip-Hop and RnB.

Hmm, if I had to choose from the top of my head, I reckon: TLC, the Fugees, After 7, Boyz to Men, Keith Sweat, Bones Thugs n' Harmony, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Groove Theory, 3T, Babyface, Tony Rich Project, Monica, etc., etc. All those classic artists had some of the best songs of the past decade or so :worship:

I don't know how to explain it, but I really liked how bands/artists like Boyz to Men and After 7 were the big RnB names. Of course, I'm not saying that the RnB artists today are no good, but they just don't have the kind of 'mellow', 'mild' type of songs that really defined 80s/90s style RnB. From where I stand, the RnB songs today are more focused on mixing itself with either dance or hip-hop. It's great for night-club atmospheres, but they get kinda boring when I listen to them constantly on radio or music shows.

Back then, RnB was focused on things such as voice harmony and more mild melodies. IMO, the RnB songs today have nothing over the slow jam classics such as 'Till you do me right', 'Breathe Again', 'Tell Me', etc.

Good point, Musashino, but there is old school quality R&B that’s out now. Unfortunately it is not as popular as the current hip hop/R&B but it is definitely out there (Jill Scott, Amel Larrieux, Kem, for example).

I’m a more recent fan of After 7’s. All I knew back then was “Can’t Stop” and “Heat of the Moment” but last year I got their Greatest Hits and discovered all their great songs like “Til You Do Me Right”. :)

Thanks Jamz :)

I should check out those artists you listed. 'Mellow' and 'RnB' seem like a really rare combination these days. It's amazing when I look back to the early 90s and look at what's out today, the difference is HUGE! I know it's been a decade or so, but still, I wish Boyz to Men type of artists were the ones dominating the chart, not Usher.

And I :worship: "Till you do me right". It's one of my favourite older-style (old school?) RnB songs. It defined the best of RnB slow jams - it had a mild tempo, great lyrics, awesome vocal harmony, and yet not one bit about that song is boring. It's one of those rare songs that I could listen to for ages without ever getting sick of it. Call me crazy, but I think After 7 should be inducted into a Music Hall of Fame of some sort just for conducting such a great song :worship:

Thanks for the recommendations you sent in the PM :) I'll be looking forward to any other recommendations you've got.

Just to give you an idea of what kind of RnB songs I like, here is a list of some of my favourite old-school RnB songs (I've got plenty more, but I can't think properly now):

"Till you do me right" - After 7.
"One Sweet Day" - Mariah Carey/Boyz to Men.
"I'll make love to you" - Boyz to Men.
"Tell Me" - Groove Theory.
"Breathe Again" - Toni Braxton.
"High" - Toni Braxton.
"Don't take it personal" - Monica.
"I don't ever want to see you again" - Uncle Sam.
"Diggin on You" - TLC (actually, I liked all of TLC's hits :worship: ).

And many more...

En Vogue - My Lovin' / Don't let Go
TLC - Red Light Special ( and loads more TLC tracks)

Fugees - Killing me Softly (Song of 1996)
Toni Braxton - Another Sad Love Song
Blackstreet - No Diggity
R Kelly - Bump 'n' Grind

Snoop & Dr. Dre - Ain't nuthin but a G thing ( almost forgot to mention this one :o )

Better than today? Yes! Better than R&B from the 80's and 70's? Not even close! :p Unless yawl think Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton and Brandy are better than Chaka Khan, Stephanie Mills and Patti Labelle. Don't get me wrong I like (and own) a lot of the R&B yawl are talking about and a lot of these songs (Mary, Brandy, After 7) are great to hear on the radio while I'm driving but it isn't quite on the classic level of the R&B from the 80's and 70's.

A year ago I would’ve known the difference but speaking today, I completely agree with you! The really lacking part of 90’s and 00’s R&B is the classic R&B ballad. They just don’t hold a candle to Earth Wind & Fire’s “Reasons” or Chaka Khan’s “Through The Fire” or The Stylistics’ “Break Up To Make Up”, for example.

What I never understood with the R&B singers—Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Faith Evans, Brandy, Monica and Aaliyah—was why one couldn’t like all of them. I always got the feeling among R&B fans that you had to choose a camp and support only that singer. If you like Brandy then you couldn’t like Monica. If you like Mary then you couldn’t like Faith. That’s so ridiculous.

You're right. Cause I was a HUGE Brandy fan, and only tolerated Monica. A lot of fans of Whitney don't like Mariah, and vice versa. The rivalries are fun though you gotta admit.

Does anyone remember
MoKenStef -He's Mine
Kut Close- I like
Lisa Stansfield -Been around the world/ All woman
Zhane hey Mr. DJ
Jesse Powell - You / if I
Tony Terri- ...???drawing a blank
Now those are some RNB classic

These aren't obscure, and the Tony Terry song you are probably thinking of it "When I'm with You" it's a true classic.

The rvialries are fun, I guess, but I was looking at it more from the perspective that R&B fans were content to just have 1 black female superstar, that R&B wasn't worthy of having more than one.

They aren't obscure at all. Leaning towards the obscure (from '92-'98) would be something like "I Got A Thang For Ya!" by Lo-Key (snippet here) (http://sg1.allmusic.com/cg/smp.dll?link=yx153rnsv32v5ok829h56c8&r=20.asx).

I don't think about the Simply Red guy.....I shouldn't say that. I like several of Simply Red's songs but my problem with them is more about how they are treated. When people act like they are so innovative....or when they think they are the originators of "If you don't know me by now" :fiery:

Remy Shand was alright. I was given his album and thought a few cuts were good, but the overall album not that great.

I agree with you about Justin's singing but Usher is hyped just as much as the new Michael Jackson and vocally Usher is not that good either. His voice is stronger than Justin's but by no means is Usher the great R&B singer of our times. John Legend, Maxwell and Musiq Soulchild, for starters, blow him away but then the argument could be that Usher is a Pop/R&B singer.

John Legend, Maxwell and Musiq are true R&B. Usher is more of an entertainer like MJ. Usher has great vocals though in my opinion. They just aren't as soulful as the others you mentioned. I think the first three have more of a musicianship background, whereas Usher just sings and dances.

Don't worry. Brandy will not walk away from the industry :). She did the right thing by walking away from those fuckers at Atlantic  . She is currently in the studios working on her follow-up album (with a record company yet un-named) and also developing her yet untitled show which will air on FOX (and will reunite her with some of her Moesha costars). p.s. For those who keep saying Atlantic dumped Brandy...I am quoting her from an interview, and she said, "I felt the time was right for me to walk away. They wanted different things and I wanted something different as well." In the same interview she said that Atlantic didn't want to release the singles she wannted to release. She chose Afrodisiac as her first single. Atlantic wanted Kanye West since he was enjoying success at the time. Move backfired bigtime. Another contentious issue was the fact that they shortlisted some of the best tracks, which remain unreleased. According to Brandy, one such song was a Timbo track called Blackpepper. I really really want to hear it.

I remember hearing about that song. And that it was the best song she recorded, but Atlantic decided not to put it on the album. How dumb is that?? I really thought it was funny how Atlantic released "Talk About Our Love" as a first single, when there were probably 6 other songs that would've made better first singles.

I like Brandy but really is anyone to believe her? This is the same girl who went on Oprah talking about running off and getting married and blah blah blah....all of which was not true and just a way to cover up the fact that she was unmarried and pregnant. I don't believe Brandy lying about her marriage had anything to do with her album sales. If anything these days controversy sells more. The truth is that Talk About Our Love was not that great of a single. Everybody thinks going to a hot producer will automatically produce a hit regardless if it's a mis-match or not. I knew straight out the gate that the lead off single would not produce record sales. Also you cannot go away for a while and then all of the sudden pop back up on the scene unless you are Sade or something.

Personally I think the whole marriage setup was the plan of mommie dearest and a few record execs. Brandy has been under consistent pressure for years to live up to the squeaky clean image her mother and the record company molded her to be. I am pretty sure she did the whole marriage thing to keep her image in tact(the one that was created for her at least.

I like Brandy and still feel that she is one single away from getting back on top. Their is just a uniqueness about her delivery that sounds like noone else. Of course she takes her mojo from Whitney a little, but she creates her own sound with it and I will be buying her next album.

Hot Jam that was the country version wasn't it??

VeeRee also 'Who Is She 2 U' just seemed like a cast off from her last album and is now the lead-off of the new greatest hits album but it again is a quality tune.

Afrodisiac is of da hook, I love that tune, it brings back alot of good memories;) but in the USA she never seems to relaese alot songs off her albums.

It will be interesting to see how well Faith Evans' new album sells

Yep, All-4-One covered JMM’s song.

Faith’s CD is currently #5 in the U.S. and she’s sold roughly 300,000. That’s a success considering that Faith has been out of the loop and by today’s (teen-oriented) standards, she’s a veteran artist.

Yeah i saw that, I have head a few tunes of the new album and they sound cool. She seems alot happier in herself etc. on this record. She seems destined to have an Angie Stone/Jill Scott career, which is all good

Since folks are talking about that hideous group, "All For One". Did you know that they are suing their former management saying they were ripped off? It's kind of sad because now they are working menial jobs after all the success. I hope they get compensated for being cheated because they did have a few good hits.;)

I like all Jon B’s CD though “Pleasures U Like” is the only one I own. What I love about his music is that he is 100% R&B. He doesn’t “water down” his music to try to cross over which as a white R&B singer, you’d think his label would try to capitalize on it. On “Stronger Everyday”, I really like “Everytime” especially the remix with Beenie Man.

Oh yeah, I have "Pleasures U Like" and the only weak song on there is the one they released as a single "Don't Talk" and that song isn't that bad. Jon B is so underrated though. I guess cause he doesn't make pop music like Usher or Justin Timberlake.

It's kind of hard for me to feel for a grown woman who doesn't protect herself by not sleeping with a man just cause he's rich and famous without a condom and i seriously doubt they were in a serious relationship....but we know they weren't married and she should've made his old ass wrap it up not to mention getting a clean bill of health before she slept with him unprotected. *Rocketta shakes head*

I think these are the lyrics your talking about.

Gregory Abbott - Shake you down.

Girl, I've been watching you
From so far across the floor now baby
That's nothing new
I've watched you so many times before now baby
I see that look in your eyes
And what it's telling me
And you know girl that I'm not shy
I'm glad you picked up on my telepathy now baby

You read my mind
Girl I wanna shake you down
I could give you all the loving you need
Come on let me take you down
We'll go all the way to heaven

Oh, I've been missing you
And the way you make me feel inside
What can I do?
I can tell you've got your pride now baby
Come to me, well, well
Let me ease your mind, oh baby
I got the remedy, yes I do
Now give me just a little time

You read my mind
Girl I wanna shake you down
I could give you all the loving you need
Come on let me take you down
We'll go all the way to heaven

Girl, I've been missing you
And you know it's funny
Every time I get to feeling this way
I wish I had you near me, I
I wanna reach out and touch you

I can't stop thinkin' of the things we do
The way you call me baby when I'm holding you
I shake and I shiver when I know you're near
Then you whisper in my ear, oh baby, well, well

You read my mind, (you know you did)
Girl I wanna shake you down
I could give you all the loving you need
Come on let me take you down
We'll go all the way to heaven
I love you then and I always will

How is my wifey today?

Hey Hubby! Well wifey is escaping a lot on the internet this weekend because we have company here and it's a great tool to use as avoidance. ;)

How is your day?

:worship: said it before, CrazySexyCool IS the soundtrack to the 90's. :worship: it is unbelievable how one album can be just so flawless as that album was.

anyway, another song from the 90's which I loved was Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" taken from one of the old Batman movies. I'm not too sure if that song classifys as old school r&b  but everytime I hear it, it still sends shivers through me, it is just so good. :)

Hey Sweetie!

I haven't been able to do anything this weekend since we have company. So if they ever leave I'll be doing some domestic stuff. :tears:

Your night sounds fun though! I guess I'll have to live vicariously through you. Just remember not to cheat on me. ;)

I think it was 3/4 years ago, i love her stuff its cool:)

I have finally decided that I like John Legend, the guy has got real soul - its good to hear a break from the big beats.

And also is anyone else a fan of Nikka Costa, the girl is crazy and I kinda like it

I cant make my mind up bout Jon Legend either. I think he tries too hard to have soul, wheras Eric Benet and Musiq do it effortlessly.

I like John....I think he's probably one of those performers who are better in person. I love love love the last song on the album.

On the topic of TLC, are any of you going to watch "R U The girl with T-Boz and Chilli"? Here's an article on it:
T-Boz & Chilli of TLC, head out across the country to search for that one special girl to come along with them as they embark on the next stage of their careers, on the premiere of the summer dramality series R U THE GIRL WITH T-BOZ & CHILLI, Wednesday, July 27, 8PM ET/PT.

Blending comedy and reality, these playful and endearing girls, set out on a journey filled with emotion, comedy, surprises and special guests, to look for that one lucky and talented girl who just might be the perfect fit. For nine weeks, the girls work closely with the diverse group of aspiring female performers to find the one with the right chemistry who can join them on their next great escapade.

In the live finale, T-Boz & Chilli will pick the winner and she will perform with them for the first time. The winner will also get to record a single with them.

Four-time Grammy Award-winning TLC, comprised of T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli, was formed in Atlanta in 1991. They are the biggest-selling female group of all time, riding a blend of pop, hip-hop and urban soul to superstardom during the '90s with nine top 10 singles on the Billboard Top 100, five of which hit number one, and two number-one albums on the Billboard 200. With more than 33 million albums sold worldwide, TLC have won numerous awards and have a long list of mega hits, including "Waterfalls," "Creep" and "No Scrubs." As TLC was at its peak, tragedy struck when the life of member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was unexpectedly cut short. Now, T-Boz and Chilli are ready for a new beginning for themselves and their fans.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They insist they aren't replacing Left-Eye, which I believe. All I want is TLC to release thier greatest hits and then the girls release solo projects - but if this is a good way to promote the album so be it - some TLC is better than no TLC I guess. What are your thoughts?

what channel is that show coming on? I think they have to do what they have to do to get back into the public eye. I'm all for it if they come out with a slamming album. :yeah:

I don't like the idea of R U That Girl. I heard about this idea a long time ago and thought it really sucked. TLC was about unity, they were not like Destiny's Child and the revolving door.

Both T Boz and Chili promised on their VH1 special that they would not replace Left Eye. I'm very dissapointed in their decision to audition someone to take her place. It will never be the same.

I know both ladies are probably tight on the funds, but did they have to go there? It's their decision, but I just don't agree with it at all. I probably will be watching their trainwreck of a show though.;)
