What the hell happened at the end of that set? I remember seeing Marta win that titanic game to make it 4-3, then I turn away for half a minute and suddenly she's won the first set!

Marta! I can't believe I've been following her since she was in Challengers, playing in the tennis centre down the road from me, and now she's a set up on Venus Williams!

Well Venus just lost the first set.... Im sure she underestimated her oppenent thinking she could tinker with her game ... I would expect a player of her caliber to buckle down and take the next two sets easily. She had troubled matches last year on clay and was able to still win so heres hoping for the best.

Here's what one report says of Venus' match in an article about how easily Lindsay won...

Fifth seed Williams, however, was involved in a real battle with Polish qualifier Marta Domachowska when rain forced the players off in the first game of the third set.

Domachowska played well above her world ranking of 67 as she stunned Williams by taking the first set 6-3, and the American had to battle hard to snatch the second 6-4 and level the match.

Hopefully this is just a very off Venus and not an injured one. Though historically Venus has always played well below par in the beginning of a clay court season. FIGHT VENUS!!!!

I wonder what will happen in this third set. They have already had a three and a half hour break !.

Venus will probably come back stronger as she is probably more used to the rain delay than Domachowska who is just starting off on tour.

It's a long break and will be like coming back into a fresh match with only one set. It could be that either Venus comes back wanting to finish it off - or Domachowska takes it a la the first set!

She didnt take the first set Venus handed to her on a platter... any player on tour would have done the same thing (not that its Domachowska's fault) ... Venus will step it up tomorrow and I hope Domachowska is ready for it or she will get blown off the court.

You thought she'd get blown off the court TODAY.

Also, if Marta didn't take the first set, how come the scoreboard shows that she won it 6-3? Sure seems like she took it. And she closed it out with an ace, if I remember. Great stuff, Marta! And there'll be more great stuff tomorrow, too :D

The word is spelt 'lesser'. :)

Also, what Sharapova may or may not have done is irrelevant to both Venus and Marta. Are you that obsessed with her that you can't help bringing her up in a Domachowska v Williams thread? Not even her self-proclaimed fans have mentioned her here!

Here you go... (and Denise too :) ) And no. "Morer" is not a word. "Least" is a word. ;)

lesser **
adjective [before noun]
used to describe something that is not as great in size, amount or importance as something else:
A lesser man (= a man who was not as strong or brave) might have given up at that point.
The charge of murder was altered to the lesser (= less serious) charge of manslaughter.
Ethiopia and, to a lesser extent/degree, Kenya will be badly affected by the drought.

No, no, the word is "lessor". Everyone knows how these players seem to struggle every time they have to play against the landlady. Jeez, I would too. That is someone you definitely want to keep on the good side of, so it's an idea to run dead for at least one entire set. Make the landlady feel that she put up a fight. I expect that every player on tour gives consciously tanks for much of any match that she plays against a lessor opponent.

I know how to spell lesser and I know the definition and difference between "lessor" and "lesser". I'm a real estate attorney and I'm used to typing the word "lessor", and made a mistake. Thanks for the definition, but there was really no need. But, if it makes you and sartrista feel better that you caught a mistake made by me, what can I say. I hope it made your day. :)

Last I looked, Venus played this match, so any commentary on her - however snarky - is relevant. Maria is not even playing this tournament.

I mean, you can contest those remarks if you want. What does a tight match against Marta tell us about Venus's clay court prowess? Some people interpret it as showing that she isn't as good as others have made out on the surface. Others maintain it's just a bad day. I think this is definitely on topic!
