I'm a bit embarrassed for Alicia. Oh well. I hope she gets it together later in the season for Roland Garros, she has 1R points and can pick up some more if she wins a few rounds! Go Alicia!

I'm embarassed for her too. I'm embarassed for myself for picking her in my fantasy tennis. Damn my team is sinking. I don't know why she was losing her serve. She serves in the 110s easily. She should have acted like she won on clay. She's been a little off lately. I hope this doesn't continue. Hopefully playing in doubles with Navritilova will help her play better on singles in clay.

Nice win Razzano, it's about time you get a win over a solid top ten player, you really deserve it. Razzano is one of the nicest players, so kind when I met her at the US Open. I'm really happy for her!!! Good luck in the next round!!!

hmmm... wasn't expecting to see that. This will give Venus an opportunity to put some distance between her and Alicia. She's not been nearly as consistent as she's been the last half of 04' and the beginning of this season- but if she stays positive she can turn things around.

Not too surprising of a result in my opinion. Molik hasn't performed well since Australia. Plus her ranking is a little overinflated in my opinion. She is only top 10 because of Clijsters and Henin-Hardenne's injuries.

Virgine Razzano is a capable player on dirt, but this result is a surprise. Though this is a good opportunity for Venus to put some distance to hopefully keep a top 8 seed going into Roland Garros.

Don't agree. She has played good at Antwerp and Doha..... A SF and a F is great for a lower top-10-player. She deserves it IMO. I am not her fan, but I appreciate her work.

:bigclap: to Vrginie!!

molik led myskina by a set and break in the first round of roland garros last year and made the final in vienna.

naturally it's a surface least suited to her game.

people seriously underrate razzano. she beat kuznetsova in the first round of wimbledon last year after she won eastbourne and she was a french open junior champ and has beaten some good players on clay.

i expect her to move up the rankings soon because she's been playing better lately. i guess she's top 50 for sure now no?

To me, this isn't very surprising. I mean, it IS a clay court, and Razzano is an underrated player, especially on clay, a surface that Molik isn't great on anyway.

VRP normally has trouble against power hitters, I'm surprised mightily at this result. Definitely not a step in the right direction for Molik. She needs to win these kinds of matches in her sleep.

While I think that Alicia has talent, i have not been convinced that she firmly belongs in the top 10. I think that she is one of those players who will depart when the order is reestablished, and it is getting there.

Kim has no desire to spend time more time out of the top than is necessary, Justine just coming back is heading there.

Besides, being a top player means the ability to translate your results into any surface and win.

I tend to think that even though she is a very good player, she is just a tad overrated. I mean couple months ago, there was a thread that she was headed for the number 1 spot!!!!

I hate it when a bit of the draw opens up so much with Vera Zvonereva - who was nearly upset - the top ranked played left whilst Lindsay plays Venus in the quarters.

I'm hoping this early exit is as a result of very little practice this year on clay.

Hopefully she has a few weeks off and can practice hard on clay.

virginie has a win like this from time to time, likely she'll lose her next match

and its only alicia's second poor loss of the year so lets not be to her hard on her.

Alicia :)
I was very shocked to see this result caue I didn't expect her to lose. But she will come back eventually and perform better. Like Levo said, hopefully she'll be practicing hard on clay so she'll perform well in France, but if not she'll definitely pick her game up again after the clay season.

(Fortunately for me I still have Amélie to root for during the clay season ;) )

I agree that Razzano probably had one of her freak days and played like crazy and Molik hasn't played on clay yet this year..... she's definetly no fly-by night thing though she's been trooping for years and has had to work damn hard to get to this point and I don't think she'll let it slip away - everyone has these sort of loses - Serena VS Jidkova, Lindsay VS Schual, Myskina VS Peng....... Sharapova VS Washington - she can't win every match she's expected to.

I have a feeling a lot of it was due to lack of practice on the clay courts. I mean she played in the Miami Doubles final on sunday, and then by tuesday played her 1R doubles match here and then on wednesday played her first singles match. Not really that much time to get used to the clay courts.

Anyhow, bad luck Alicia...i'm sure u'll do better next week and during the rest of the clay season. I think clay isn't really that bad a surface for Alicia....it would help the kick on her serve and the bounce and topspin on her groundstrokes, and it also slows the ball down a little so she should be able to get a few more balls back.

Thats not a very good excuse. If she considers herself a top player, she should expect that she will be going deep into tournaments, and she should give herself ample time to prepare.

Harsh, but true. Every top player on the womens' side knows how to play well on every surface. There are no "clay specialists" like there are on the mens' side.

I was really disappointed at the way Alicia played in Miami against Justine. Granted, I was rooting hard for Justine but I like Alicia also. But, against Justine, Alicia was not aggressive and seem to back off when confronted with that backhand. It was a rough draw for Alicia but Justine had been out for the best part of a year and Alicia should have been more aggressive, the way Maria was in the following round.

So, even though I like Alicia, I think her best days have passed because the big guns are back and she will sink to around the 15-20 level, which is, unfortunately where I think she belongs.
