1 week max in advance, I think's reasonable Duiz. We may sometimes allow 2, depending on how the other tournaments affect it, but I think you should seriously think about this!

I dont mind this one that much. It is her next tournement after all. Can start discussing Masha's chances on clay, though we dont know the extent of the entry list to discuss.

I hope she gets some chances to play the top players to se just where she's at. When she played Kim, the conditions worked against her, and while the GM would tell me this is not an excuse (bad repping me 100 times on the way) I think we'd all agree we did not see Maria's game played anywhere near its best. In their last match, she had the means to beat Serena, but let her get back in it.

And I've never felt worse for her than her latest match with Lindsay. I would be very interested to see a rematch of this, and also with Justine, now she's found her winning ways again.

Go Maria!!!

Maria Croft
Apr 29th, 2005, 03:53 PM
she will have a tough time on clay beating both Kim and Justine, but it's the truth, the wind did effect maria's game a lot !! so it will be a different match on clay !! she just has to get to 2 QF's to get to number one !! Go Maria !!

To be number 1 or 2 seed on clay although i love her i dont think she is ready yet. Im not sure how shen will go. As long as its an improvement from last year thaqts all i can ask for. To Make number 1 would be amazing but the pressure would be huge, but i supposes you would never give up the chance to be number 1 it may never come back.

here is an interview from Maria at the press conference at the german Open

Q: How do you like it here? I heard you went to the zoo yesterday?
SHARAPOVA: I love coming back. I've been in Germany a lot. But I was in Berlin for the first time last year. I am very familiar with Germany. I love the country, the people are great, the food is good.

Q: If you win you will be No. 1. How is your spirit?
SHARAPOVA: I don't really think about No. 1. I just take one match at a time. I am excited and happy to be back on clay court.

Q: How do you feel about being 18?

SHARAPOVA: I feel old (laughs). No, I feel the same. It's nothing bit. But there are a few things I can do now which I couldn't do before?

Q: What are those things?
SHARAPOVA: Nothing special. I don't really know.

Q: When do you think you became an adult? A long time ago?
SHARAPOVA: With being a sportsperson, I had to become an adult a long time ago. It's just experience and having to be responsible even when you are still young. I never really thought about being an adult. When you travel that much you have to be older than your real age. A lot of the young people are in school. They have more of a social life. Also with education. It's difficult to maintain education especially with travelling.

Q: Do you ever have moments when you want to hang out with your friends and change your life?
SHARAPOVA: Oh, yes, there are a lot of these moments when I feel I want to be with my friends. But after a few days off, I want to get back and play.

Q: How do you change your game when you come on clay?
SHARAPOVA: I can't really change my game. It's longer rallies of course and you have to be patient, but I can't change my whole game.

Q: How do you rate your chances winning a title on clay compared to grass?
SHARAPOVA: Actually, I played a lot of tournaments on clay as a junior. I had a lot of experience on clay. Everybody told me how smart and patient I was. I feel good on clay; it's a different game, but it's fun.

Q: What exactly is different about Roland Garros compared to Wimbledon?
SHARAPOVA: Oh, it's very different, but I love going back to Paris. It is my second favourite Grand Slam. Last year I got to the quarters. So, this year I am looking forward to winning. I know it well now. Last year it was my first time there.

Q: So, this year you are more confident about the French Open?
SHARAPOVA: Yes, I just have more experience and that gives me more confidence.

Q: Do you know Anna-Lena Groenefeld?
SHARAPOVA: I have never played her, but I know her name from juniors.

Q: I don't know whether you pay much attention to the voting of the top 50 in the People magazine. Is the competition with Anna Kurnikova on your mind?
SHARAPOVA: I always followed the voting. So, it's a big honour. But the competition, I don't think it should have anything to do with it.

Q: Am I correct that you played in Doha?
SHARAPOVA: Yes.

Q: What brought you to Doha and what were your impressions?
SHARAPOVA: It was my first time there. It is completely different. The tournament was in the middle of nowhere, but the hospitality was great. The people are so laid back.

Q: Can you imagine that a country like Qatar organizes this tournament. Can you imagine these countries taking over more and more tournaments?
SHARAPOVA: It is amazing. For instance the building here. When I saw it I thought I was in Doha.

Q: You said you don't really change your game when you play on clay. But do you do some slight adjustments?
SHARAPOVA: Of course, but I don't change my game. I have to be more patient. You're not going to hit so many winners. Also mentally and physically you have to be more fit. But, I've been training hard for it.

Q: Do you still continue your yoga lessons?
SHARAPOVA: Yes, I still do it, but not as much as before. More once in two weeks.

Q: Was it more mental yoga?
SHARAPOVA: It is more to relax and stretch.

Q: Do you think it helps you on clay?
SHARAPOVA: No, for clay you need a lot of fitness.

Q: You also play speedball?
SHARAPOVA: Yes, that's just for fun.

Q: You say that you are very happy on court. Is that why you are so focussed?
SHARAPOVA: No, I think its natural. When you step on court, you just think on how you are going to play. It's a personality thing.

Q: You are close to the No. 1 spot. Is that something you try and keep out of your mind?
SHARAPOVA: It would be a big honour for me. Of course, I am No. 2 and I know the next spot is No. 1. If it happens it is great. But, I have time.

Q: You always think very positive. Is that something you have inside you?
SHARAPOVA: I always try to be optimistic. I think it helps in life.

Q: How do you feel about defending your title in Wimbledon?
SHARAPOVA: Right now, I am not really thinking about Wimbledon.

Q: You created a perfume?
SHARAPOVA: Yes, I created the scent. I worked with the lab people and created the bottle and the box. It is coming out on the 1st of September.

Q: When you met Martina Navratilova, did she help you to go to Boletieri?
SHARAPOVA: No.

Q: Why did you chose to go to Boletieri?
SHARAPOVA: I don't know. It was just because my parents had heard about it.

Andy.

Maria's interview after her 2R match...;)

Q: She actually played well and you killed her. You must be quite pleased?
SHARAPOVA: With first round, you never really know to expect. It's my first match on clay. I knew it wasn't going to be easy; she was going to play the favourite. She has quite a big serve. So, I tried to step in and attack and put pressure on her. It was a good, solid performance.

Q: What do you have to try to do to your game to adapt from a quick to a slow surface? Put more spin on it?
SHARAPOVA: The pace of the ball has to be faster and heavier and you might have to hit it harder. The ball might not bounce off as fast as on a grass court. And you have to be a lot more patient than on faster surfaces.

Q: Does it take a lot of time to do?
SHARAPOVA: I think I had enough time from Key Biscaine to this point. I had some ten days off and then I was back in training. I had about 3 ˝ weeks of hard good training.

Q: You won a Grand Slam on grass. You came close to a title on rebound ace? Do you think you have it in you to win on clay?
SHARAPOVA: I think I do. I just think I need some time. I had a great experience in Roland Garros. I learned more about my game on clay. Because, I felt I had more options. Like last year, I don't think I was 50 % of what I am now on clay.

Q: You said you were working out for 3 ˝ weeks. Where was that? At Bolitieri's?
SHARAPOVA: I was in Florida for about 5 days, because after Miami I was doing a lot of sponsor stuff. So for about 10 days I was working for my sponsors. So I stayed there. Then I went to my house for 5, 6 days. Actually it was for the first time this year. Then I went to Spain and trained in a little town near Alicante.

Q: Do you know how good a clay court player you are now?
SHARAPOVA: I'll see how it goes. It' s hard to say when you just played your first round. But I played a lot on clay in juniors and I remember I was very good, very patient. Actually I played a lot better on clay than I did on hard court back then. Maybe because I couldn't really adjust to the hard balls at that time. It needs time. Not everything comes so quickly. I have to adjust. I have to realize that I have to be more patient.

Q: You said you only spent 5, 6 days in your house. Did you ever yet feel too much strain? That the travelling is actually a strain?
SHARAPOVA: No, actually I have a few homes. I train in Los Angeles a lot. It's a bit like home, but I don't really have a house there yet. Also Spain is a bit of a home. I train a lot there, so it feels like home. It makes it easier.

Q: When it was tight today in the last game you used the grunting. In which way do use them as an intimidation?
SHARAPOVA: I have no idea. I don't really think I use it to intimidate.

Q: You might become No. 1. Do you realize you might be playing against Clijsters or Henin in the semis?
SHARAPOVA: I never look ahead in a tournament. I just worry about the next opponent and take it from there. Of course it would be amazing to be No. 1, but I'm not putting any extra pressure on myself.

Q: Apparently at the men's tournament in Rome there was a problem with the Nike logo on the back of a shirt. Did you ever have such a problem.
A. No. Never.

Interview from after the 3R match...

Q: That was a funny, odd match?
SHARAPOVA: Yes.

Q: What happened?
SHARAPOVA: I think the umpire called the ball out.

Q: It seemed like a fairly routine win for you.
SHARAPOVA: Yes. I started off well. I was serving very well. I think I put a lot of pressure on her service games. So she felt, she needed to do a little bit more. I felt good also when the points went longer, I had the energy. I was moving well.

Q: You seemed to attack the return of serve harder today. It seemed you were applying pressure on her second serve as well as on her first serve. Is that something in your mind playing on a clay court?
SHARAPOVA: I think it's important to put her under pressure when you get a good chance. I don't think I did it on break points or points that were really close, then I had to play out the points. But if I was 0:30 up, I had the chance.

Q: How good is she and how good do you think she is going to be?
SHARAPOVA: I think she's got a lot of potential. I think she definitely should work on her movement, because that's one of her weaknesses. But she has a really good serve and can get good free points with her serve.

Q: You saved the breakpoint early in the second set. After you had saved that, the whole match seemed to run in your direction. Do you think otherwise, the set could have gone the other way. Do you think it was a psychological thing?
SHARAPOVA: It might be, after winning the first set 6:2. After that game … It was a tough one. If she had won that game it would have been a different story. I was up two or three games. I don't think mentally she is at her best in that point.

Q: Does the relatively cold weather make it difficult for you?
SHARAPOVA: The conditions are heavier, the court is heavier, you can't slide as much. I definitely don't like cold weather (laughs). We had a few good days. But what can we do. That's nature.

Q: You seem very relaxed and confident given that it's a surface on which you haven't won a major title.
SHARAPOVA: I didn't win anything since last year. But I feel relaxed and good. I think my next match is going to be tougher. And it will be tougher as the rounds go on. I think it's important to have fun and enjoy on the court. If not it wouldn't make sense.

Q: Do you work on the mental side or is it natural?
SHARAPOVA: Natural.

Q: Just to ask a very English question. What are you going to do between the French Open and Wimbledon?
SHARAPOVA: I will play Birmingham. It depends on how I feel. I like a week off before the Grand Slams.

Q: I would like to know where you were on the day of your birthday.
SHARAPOVA: I flew into Spain on that day.

Q: How did you spend your birthday?
SHARAPOVA: I arrived at the club and everybody pretended they didn't know it was my birthday. I thought "oh, alright". But then the kids came with a cake. Before I spent the day with my mum in Florida. That was nice. Actually we bought a house, so that was a big surprise.

Q: Do you think more about winning the tournament or about becoming No. 1?
SHARAPOVA: I guess if I win, I am No. 1. Whatever.

Q: Just to ask a very English question. What are you going to do between the French Open and Wimbledon?
SHARAPOVA: I will play Birmingham. It depends on how I feel. I like a week off before the Grand Slams.

I thought it had been said she was not going to play Birmingham?

Maria is saying otherwise.

Interesting about Birmingham...I think it is possible for Maria to play there and it looks like she'll wait and see how she goes in the next few weeks..She hasnt comitted yet but I bet theyve left the door open for her to enter later...

Maria tried hard but she was no match for the clay court expert, she still has much to learn on clay, too bad !!

From the last 3 losses, it seems her biggest enemy is bad weather.
Maybe she should learn how to beat it, just like Ayrton Senna before he became the "Rain Man" :)
