I thought we have tournament threads which come and go, but why don't we have an ongoing Fed cup thread, which we can use to post all Maria's Fed cup news?

Tell me if this is a good idea, and I will leave it here. Tell me if it's a bad idea, and I will delete it.

Sharapova left out of Russia team

Sharapova has yet to play in the Fed Cup
Maria Sharapova has been left out of Russia's squad for the Fed Cup first-round tie against Italy later this month.
Team captain Shamil Tarpishchev went to Miami last week to try and persuade the 17-year-old to join the squad.

"I spoke to her father and we decided not to include her," said Tarpishchev. "It is a burden to play all the tournaments in a row."

The team is Ana Myskina, Dinara Safina, Elena Bovina and Elena Dementieva.

Sharapova has yet to make her Fed Cup debut and denied speculation last week suggesting she was about to switch her allegiance to the US, where she has lived since childhood.

The Wimbledon champion was the subject of a row last year when French Open champion Myskina threatened to quit the Russian team if Sharapova was picked.

She was unhappy with the courtside behaviour of Sharapova's father Yuri Sharapov.

News? What news?

"Maria Sharapova" and "Fed Cup" do not belong in the same sentence, it seems.

Nope...
Maria said in an interview the other day that she has ruled herself out for the whole year because she doesnt think its fair on the other girls if she comes into the team, at one of their expense, after they have won the earlier tie..:)

I think that's a poor exuse; It's nice of her if it is true that she doesn't want to come in and mess things around, but I kindov think that if she has space in her timetable, the best thing for the team would be to have their #1 player on call.

I think this is a cover up for some other excuse, probably quite simply, that she wants to take a break.

'well duh' is the right answer because Maria said the reason she isnt playing the first tie is that she wants to rest her tired body.

She was talking about ties later in the year when she said she didnt want to disrupt the team...

Sarah how can you not be a Fed Cup type?
Maria is a proud Russian and if she hadnt already played 25 matches this year (unlike all the other Russians) and had 2 niggling injuries then see would have surely played...At her age and stature she cant go on playing for 3 months at a time without a long rest :)
