View Full Version : French Open Semi-Finalist.

PointBlank

Ok every year lately there is a semi-finalist no one really expected to get there(except maybe there favorites but hey)..anyways..here are some examples:

04 - Suarez
03 - Petrova
02 - Fernandez
01 - Clijsters/Henin-Hardenne

So who do you think this year?..please dont put Zvonareva..even though she is slumping she is still a top player..

I think maybe Karatantcheva..she won juniors this year..and she loves clay..and she gets to play it finally pro this year..

I think Schnyder could surprise everyone.

Schnyder plays well on clay.

anyone think Fabiola could make a suprise

I think Schnyder could surprise everyone.I wouldn't call it a surprise. Patty has an excellent game for clay.

I sorta agree with you and Karatantcheva. I don't think she will make the semifinals but she will show her potential on clay this year.
I don't know who will be the surprise player this year.

Lindsay Davenport. Yeah she's the number one player in the world but who really thinks she could make it that far.

Marcus1979

Could we call it a suprise if Mauresmo won a semifinal or won the event ;)

Farina-Elia  I just love how she always floats around the GS draws. :D

The 4th Rnd is where she normally loses in the last few of GS events.... But i'd love to see her do well in RG ... Perhaps QF .

Flavia Pennetta  Her GS record is not too good. Only been playing in GS since '03. RG debut = 3rd rnd ... She's already won 2 events this season. I think Flavia could surprise a few. :)

Currently I'd say Pennetta could spring a surprise if she brings her clay court game with her.

Hmmm... otherwise I really don't know! To me, Roland Garros tends to be bring most of the surprises in terms of Grand Slams! Tim Henman anyone? :P

Maybe Pascual? If she's on, who knows?

Tim Henman anyone? :P

I take this , it's good to see him play on clay, it brings change to the clay courters game , last year I wanted him to take the title

i'll be dissapointed if patty loses before the quarters of roland garros so i wouldn't put her in the surprise category.

suarez was a surprise but you can't look over the fact that she benefitted from her draw (i credit her for that though - it's not a criticism at all)

petrova was in great form leading into that tournament from memory

clijsters/henin were big prospects.

fernandez was the only major shock and i think she beat someone good early and then beat suarez in that dramatic quarter-final.

switz
Apr 5th, 2005, 01:51 AM
yeah i would put mary in there. if she's healthy and has decent draw she can beat anyone.

i think golovin might do something - maybe not semi.

Don't get me wrong, so did I when he reached the semis but my GOD what a shock! Especially for a guy who doesn't play that well on clay (a general British trait really!)

Anyway... Erm... ladies...er... Vaidisova, Vaidisova, Vaidisova. That makes this post valid. Sort of.

Would Dokic be given a wildcard? If she is maybe it would be her.

Of course I would hope Tammy be the surprise semifinalist.

And given last year's breakthrough by Zheng, perhaps a Chinese girl (Li, Peng or Zheng might reach the semifinals.)

at this point i want to see him win any slam, i'd hate to see him retire without one.

I'll go out on a limb and say that I think the surprise player will be Shahar Peer or Ana Ivanovic. At least that's what I am hoping. I think these two girls can do some damage on the clay!

Molik in the SF's would be a huge upset...

Clay... :scared:

Apr 5th, 2005, 10:15 AM
the top twelev players to include kim and justine are not going to be upset, if one is upset there is still a host of other players. Quite frankly, the top four are not too far away from the pack. as of now,
the no.s 5-8 are elenaD, myskina, kuzy and venus
9-12 molik, veraZ, jen petrova.
and there there is justine and kim.acording to seeding if anyone on the the 5-8 is uspset by the 9-12 or the belgians, no surprises there. hard to imagine some virtual unknown having to beat molik, kim and venus just to make the semis. Upsetting one yea, all three not possible.

Apr 5th, 2005, 11:11 AM
Nadia played very well in 2003 beating Monica (injury retirement) in Rome, and then Monica (last pro match she played), Jennifer and Vera at RG.
Clarissa Fernandez beat Kim 6-4, 6-0 at RG in 2002 on her way to the semis.
Kim and Justine were already known on the tour by the time they played RG 2001. Kim had beaten Martina in the semis at Indian Wells in 2001.
Suarez was not a surprise. She is a brilliant clay-court player. Respect.

I didn't see Paola as a surprise at all, more considering she could have been there some years before, so it was pretty natural to see her up there in her best surface... hell it was much more shocking to see her doing great in Wimbledon.
And about the thread... not sure at all if they will reach semis, but some who may surprise could be Penetta, Serna (she has to stop her slump anytime), Medina or Benesova if she's on :p of course add as well an unknown russian who will come from somewhere and whose surname will be impossible to say for most of the population in the world :p

I think Flavia has a very good chance to go deep at this years French Open - she is currently unbeaten on clay this year and has titled twice on this surface - all her titles are on clay as are her final appearances so clay is definitley her best friend.

I love the French Open as it can be so unpredictable.

Ivanovic, Vaidisova and Mirza will also probably do quite well too.

The field is much stronger then the past few years, so I pedict four top-players in the semis.

Michaella Krajicek?? She's pretty good on clay! Though that wouldn't happen I think.. but I think that she has a good chance to reach at least the fourth round. It would be great for France if Tati or Momo can reach the semis at Roland Garros! :p
