Big shock here at the first round at the B&L Championships at Amelia Island.

Evgenia lost 4-6 6-2 6-4 to Anabel Medina Garrigues

I thought the Russian teenager would go far at this tournament :(

She doesn't have a lot of clay court experience, but I'm surprised she didn't come through.
It's still a big year for her.
And she plays in the doubles qualie final later today.

I don't think she's that comfortable on clay.

Well she did loose to a claycourter. But last year at this time, she won the Jackson, MS 25k on green clay and the next week reached the Dothan, AL 75k final, on green clay. She played very well those two weeks and seemed like she knew how to use the clay court to her advantage. I guess it was a telling sign though that she lost 2 and 1 to Shuai Peng (who isn't a clay fan) in the final of the 75k. Oh well, she has plenty of time to find her game:) Go Evgenia!

It's not a big shock, Linetskaya is number 37, Anabel is number 43 and claycourt specialist. I think the result is perfectly normal

But Linetskaya was #201 last April, and has beaten Mauresmo, Zvonareva, and Frazier this year.
So it's a little surprising.

Yeah it's not that shocking. The match was close so either person could have won. Anabel just had more experience on clay and survived. Linetskaya will get better as the clay season goes on.

You knew Medina was going to be a tough opponent in the first clay tournie of the year. It was just a bad draw for both players and unfortunately one of them had to lose first round. I'd say Zhenya's stock is still riding pretty high despite this loss.
