A left hip injury has forced fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva to withdraw from this week's Bausch & Lomb Championships in Amelia Island, Florida. Dementieva, who won her first career tournament title at Amelia Island in 2003, said playing successive tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami took a toll on her sore left hip.

"Iím very sad not to be playing the Bausch & Lomb Championships this year, but unfortunately my hip doesnít feel good after the two tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami," Dementieva said in a statement. "Amelia Island is a place I always enjoy coming back to, especially since I won my first title there in 2003. Itís an excellent event and I sincerely hope I can be back there again next year. I wish everyone there well."

The fifth-ranked Russian was scheduled to make her sixth consecutive appearance at the Bausch & Lomb Championships. On the road to her 2003 win at Amelia Island, Dementieva upset seeds Amanda Coetzer, Daniela Hantuchova, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Lindsay Davenport to become to the tournamentís lowest seed (No. 10) to win the coveted trophy. She reached the quarterfinals in 2001 and 2002 as well. Dementieva holds four career singles titles and is currently ranked No. 7 in the world.

The 2005 Bausch & Lomb Championships boasts a competitive field that includes No. 1 in the world and the tournamentís defending champion, Lindsay Davenport. Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Anastasia Myskina, Vera Zvonareva, Nadia Petrova, Conchita Martinez and Mary Pierce also headline the tournamentís field.

Very disappointing for Lena..hopefully she can get back to full fitness before the majors in May/June

Apr 4th, 2005, 04:21 PM
Take Care! We'll miss you; but it's for the best that there's no
tennis this week. :wavey: #5 player in the world. :)

A pity. Elena here had only one point to defend so would have been a good chance to gain some valuable ranking points - but Elena get fit and well soon! :bounce:

As a practising journalist I would never make such a mistake about Lena's ranking ;) Well maybe Id get carried away and put her #1 as shes my #1 :p

Get well soon Elena

Apr 4th, 2005, 06:21 PM

be back soon Elena :)

Apr 4th, 2005, 11:37 PM
That's too bad :( Lena could have grabbed more points here since she had an early loss there last year...

I hope this time she'll rest up well before committing to anymore tournaments before RG. That's already the 2nd time this year she's been out injured!

Dementieva...is currently ranked No. 7 in the world.

I thought it was no.5

She seems like a very nice girl. The nicest out of the Russians, for sure.

Poor Lena  Get well soon!

Apr 5th, 2005, 12:55 AM
get well soon Elena

But at least this is just a Tier II I suppose and she can make it up when she plays the big Tier I events

if she plays Charleston next week

or plays Berlin and Rome

Apr 5th, 2005, 01:00 AM
Elena :(

Her schedule is just too much.

Dementieva should participate in Rome & Berlin.

She should miss Charleston :)

Apr 5th, 2005, 01:15 AM
she should gain a lot by playing Berlin and Rome but then the pressure is on when Roland Garros starts as her ranking could take a hit unless she has a good performance there

Lena

So that's why she withdrew.... I was kind of psyched about her playing at AI, where she's done really well before. And where Kim isn't playing :p But, perhaps its best if she just keeps herself fully fit for the big ones

poor Elena, of late she seems to be getting small but irritating injuries, she stated the year in tokyo on a very positive note and looked like she could settle down and string some fantastic wins.

Apr 5th, 2005, 10:55 AM
Get well the soonest, Elena!!

Take care!

And thanks for the (not so good) news!

Apr 5th, 2005, 11:36 AM
Elena tsk tsk. You just got over an injury. I'm not sure what player attempts to play for 5 straight weeks but obviously it's not a good idea. I hope you get over this injury soon.
