I know Mary got a wild card into the Australian Open but I was wondering if she will be seeded there also because of her ranking protection?

I hope so. She is too dangerous if she is underseeded.

I don't believe she received any kind of injury ranking or anything. Even if she did though, she wouldn't be seeded, because of her actual ranking of 129. However, they might do what they did at Wimbledon in 1998.. Graf had fallen to 91st in the world, but they gave her the fourth seed. However, I don't think they will seed her.

I don't think Mary will be seeded. I read somewhere that the organisers were a little peeved as she had a choice of wildcards, ie one that goes to the French player on the basis the French Open gives one to an Australian at the French Open or just a wildcard. She opted for the latter and they would have preferred her to take the other that way they could have given another one to another Aussie player. I can't see how they could seed her if they did anyway.

Ok another question then. If Mary is being injury protection, why could she not be seeded if others like Monica and Steffi have in the past?

Wasn't Mary a top-15 player before she stopped playing?

Monica and Steffi were Gold Exempt Status when they returned.

Mary is not

Hi TheBoiledEgg, for us tennis dummies why don't you elaborate that for us.......after all mary is a former Aussie champ......so what does this gold exempt status mean?

look in statistics forum, you'll see a full explanation there plus other rulings i've dug up.

Mary is a former slam champ but she isn't listed as one of the 20 Gold Exempt players for 2002.
