she played enough to beat a passive venus

She just played solid tennis and served well. Her groundstrokes were consistent. I wouldn't exactly say she is a genuis or played like Roger Federer. Maria played Venus like every coach tells their player to play her, just go for the Venus forehand and wait for the error. I watched that match and Venus made some spectacular shots like the stab volley she made at the net to cut off a cross court passing shot by Maria but Venus never got credit for that. Venus went toe to toe with Maria but lost her serves and made alot of forehand errors as usual. I also feel she didn't make good shot selections, instead she was hitting the balls in Maria's strike zone. Venus was inconsistent like always, she only got agressive towards the end but I was still impressed by her performance. At least she didn't get double bageled.

considering maria played as well as she could play and we all know venus can go up several more levels........its kinda scary to think that maria only won the match on two breaks and mostly venus errors (venus had more winners in both sets).........in due time this rivalry will favor venus if she continues the progress the way that she has these past couple of weeks

She sure did play well. Lets hope she can keep it up for the final.

If both maria and kim play up to their semi final levels, we are in for an absolute bottler.

In due time, you mean as they get older?

OK....

so who has more chances of progressing?

the 25 year old Venus or
the 18 year old Maria.....

Look, in that match Venus and Maria almost played at the same level, only Venus failed to hold on the big points and Maria take advantage.

And i understand from where you are standing as fan of the WS but please your logic is way idiotic here.

my logic is that 18 year old maria is at her peak..........you can disagree all you want but remember age doesnt have much to do with when a player peaks (hingis anyone?)..........she wont get much better than she already is......venus on the other hand is not at her peak right now b/c she has proven she can play much better than she did against maria........maybe maria has another level higher than the one she has displayed this year but i highly doubt it.........she was taught to hit the ball hard and that was about it......she doesnt have anything to back that game plan up should it go off.....in my opinion her game will remain the same and players will soon discover how to beat her.......and please dont reply back with venus and serena have the exact same game as maria........they have better games.....their movement is better...shot selection better......volleys better....serve better.....and the list goes on.........obviously i could be wrong but i doubt it....

Wow, this argument could go either way. Lets just say congrats to Maria for a good match, and to Venus, hopefully you will win a big tourney soon! Congrats to both on a good tournament!:wavey: :bounce:

so your saying that maria is at her peak right not but venus isn't cause she can play much better? once players hit their peak, they usually don't play that well ever again. Venus will never be as good as she was a few years ago.

well thats a good point..........its definitely not certain that venus will ever reach her peak form again..........i guess what i am trying to say is that peak venus beats peak maria 9 times out of 10 unless maria can show us that she has another level that she can reach (which is definitely possible......no denying that)........but in my humble opinion you won't see maria sharapova in her career play much better than she is playing right now

first people say venus was passive, but then they see that she had way more winners and unforced errors than maria, who actually dictated more points. if fans are so delusional that they can't see that maria was tugging venus around the baseline on a string that entire match, then that's their issue (and their mistake).

then they wanna paint the picture that this was some ultra close match and that maria played out of her mind and that venus has all these other "levels" she can play at. well where are they?

to think venus is going to improve throughout the rest of her career and that maria will either stay the same or get worse is just retarded.

Exactly.

It's almost as if playing a consistent game is frowned upon, because that's what Maria done. Many times she could've unloaded and gone for winners, but instead she chose to place the ball deep to Venus' forehand and draw the error.

Really it isn't that complicated. Maria = consistent/less errors. Venus = more winners/more errors.

Even Martina Hingis who knows a thing or two about tennis didn't say anything special about the way Maria was playing when the commentators asked her about it. Martina basically said Maria is serve dependant and said Venus was not agressive enough. Maria didn't do anything special!

Exactly, Maria didn't do anything special. She gets faster and stronger every week, and those Landsdorp groundies and developing serve will only get better. The scary thing is, wait until September rolls around... in that much time, I'd like to see anybody who can beat Maria. It will be damn hard, for sure...

Believe it or not I am actually happy Venus is upstaging her comeback BUT
in the end, whether Vee didn't bring her A game or not, Maria found a way to defeat her. period

ill agree with you that she can definitely get faster..........but come on the groundies cant get any better........and i honestly dont see how the serve can either........

We don't even know if she's done growing yet. Certainly, she can (and has been) getting more muscular. In my opinion Maria's shots, as hard and clean as they are now, will only get faster and heavier in the near future. Could be wrong.

yep, nothing special. keep telling yourself that.

meanwhile, mauresmo and elena consecutively played their worst matches all year against kim, and kim just had to keep the ball in play against both of them to win. she hit like 4 winners against elena and not that many against amelie... sounds like martina is trying to get herself popular over there...

I agree, Venus is still improving and the rest of the year will tell us if she can get back to her peak. Venus at her peak is definitely better then Maria at her peak, altough I do think Maria has room to improve even more.
I disagree with the poster who said that Venus played passive she had more winners and more errors then Maria so she was the agressor, but her return of serve was bad and she didn't execute at the right time.
It was a close match and Maria came out on top because she played cleaner.
It's just a matter of time before Venus is completely back.

Maria can defiitely get stronger. She says so herself. And her average serve has only been around 100 MPH. If she can get that average up closer to 110 with the same accuracy (which requires a gradual increase in strength) she could get her serve games even harder to break. Imagine Maria with a serve like Molik.

I would much prefer Masha have greater footspeed than tacking 10 MPH more on her serve.

And Sharapova didnt play amazingly against Venus. She played consistently, and well, thats enough to beat Venus these days.

Maria was playing too well for Venus to beat her. The fact that she wasn't missing at all, means that Venus had to be spot on ALL the time. Maria also wasn't guiding the ball. Venus is long enough and quick enough to get to those balls that would most likely be winners against most. For Venus, she needs her opponents to make errors. Venus can't hit winners every point. Venus was not allowed to come into the net, because Maria was hitting the ball SOOO deep. I felt that maybe mixing up the pace would've helped Venus, because she was hitting into Maria's strike zone everytime. Venus needs to make Maria play sloppy. The next time Venus plays Maria, she needs to make Maria play well early, not wait for Maria late in the set. She didn't jump on Maria quickly enough, and couldn't play toe to toe with her for ten games. The early games against Maria are the most important to win, because then she will get negative, like against Davenport or against Molik in Doha.

Certain Williams' fans are scaring me with how stupid they are.. OMG Those arguments of Sharapova less likely to improve at 17 versus an aging Venus.

Alot of Maria ass kissers are living in some fantasy world if you think Venus and Serena are her only competition. Their are other players who will challenege her and kick ass. You underestimate and ignore the other players. It won't be a cake walk for Maria believe me.

I agree. Maria, I felt, played one of those once-off matches where she could do no wrong out there. I mean all credit to Maria but I feel she will never play as good as that again. I don't think any player could have beaten her that day, she was just too good. :) Venus though is certainly back on the right track :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Venus' best day are behind her. It's been 3 years since she won any big tournaments besides the Tier 1 in charleston. Back then the tour wasn't as tough with the Belgians and Russians. Certainly she's had a good career with 4 GS. Nothing to be ashamed of.
