WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - Venus Williams will join her sister Serena and top-ranked Lindsay Davenport on the U.S. Fed Cup team for its April 23-24 quarter-final against Belgium at Delray Beach, Fla.

That trio - all ranked in the top 10 - hasn't played Fed Cup together since 1999, when the United States won the team event.

Completing the squad is Corina Morariu, who forms the world's No. 2 doubles team with Davenport. They were the runners-up at the Australian Open this year.

USA takes on Belgium in Fed Cup for the fourth time and currently boasts a 3-0 record in previous meetings. In 2003, USA defeated Belgium 4-1 in Moscow in the World Group Semifinals.

hey are you in jacksonville?! if so, then you must be going to Amelia Island! I'm in the same predicament for Fed Cup; I'm in Gainesville, which is a long ways from Miami, and its the same weekend that my final exams start...

Actually I live in OKC, Oklahoma :p

I was planning on going to Florida sometime either this month or next month (Couldn't go now because of commitments to my church) and am now most likely going to see if I can go for Fed Cup. My friend got her liscense and car about two months ago and told me she could come and get me so we'll most likely go to Delray Beach for a few days, HOPEFULLY while Lindsay is playing :)

Easy Opener for Davenport
As expected, Lindsay Davenport had little trouble with Belgian Eveline Vanhyfte, giving the United States a 1-0 lead in this first round rubber with a 60 62 win in just 39 minutes.

Davenport broke at love to start the match then held her first two service games at love to sprint to a 4-0 first-set lead. The world No. 1 closed out the first set with another easy break and a quick hold. The opening set took just 13 minutes.

Davenport, who has now won 22 consecutive Fed Cup matches, broke again at love to begin the second set. Vanhyfte fought her way to deuce in the next two games before losing each. She held her last two service games to extend the set, but Davenport was always in control.

Vanhyfte has not played a WTA Tour-level match this year and had never played anyone ranked higher than 180 before Davenport.

Davenport Leads Off for USA

The draw has been made for the World Group I tie between USA and Belgium in Delray Beach, FL, USA :

Lindsay Davenport (USA) v Eveline Vanhyfte (BEL)
Venus Williams (USA) v Els Callens (BEL)
Lindsay Davenport (USA) v Els Callens (BEL)
Venus Williams (USA) v Eveline Vanhyfte (BEL)
Lindsay Davenport/Corina Morariu (USA) v Leslie Butkiewicz/Els Callens (BEL)

This caliber of players does not come together without a reason. Hoping to end a five-year drought in Fed Cup, the United States has assembled a powerful squad to face Belgium in this weekend’s World Group quarterfinal in Delray Beach, Florida.

“We’re third on the list right now,” US captain Zina Garrison said in reference to the current Fed Cup nations ranking. “There’s so many other great teams, but, I think, [the players] have gotten together and they’ve discussed what they wanted to do, and I think that I just happen to be at the right place at the right time.”

Lindsay Davenport is the top-ranked player in the world. Serena Williams won the seventh Grand Slam of her career at this year’s Australian Open. And Venus Williams has not dropped a Fed Cup rubber since 1999. This is the first time the trio has worn the red, white and blue at the same time since the US beat Russia in the 1999 final.

“You always want to be part of such a great team,” Davenport said. “We really feel like we can stick together this whole year and play all the weeks. We feel like we should win it.”

Davenport returns to Fed Cup for the first time since 2002 this weekend. She brings with her a 21-match winning streak in this event, dating back to the 1994 final against Spain.

“It’s been a while,” Davenport explained. “I was a huge supporter of Fed Cup for 10 years. I’m happy to be back, and happy to be back with such a strong team.”

While Garrison has the “problem” of choosing between three players who have all been #1 in the world, Belgian captain Carl Maes is without his best weapons. Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin-Hardenne, still recovering from injuries that kept them off the court for most of last year, are not in southeast Florida this weekend. That leaves doubles specialist Els Callens and three inexperienced players to fight the American juggernaut.

“I think we’re playing probably against the best team ever that stepped on a court for a Fed Cup tie, so we need to be realistic” said Belgian captain Carl Maes. “We look more towards this week as a preparation almost for the next ties.”

Callens’ résumé boasts almost three dozen Fed Cup rubbers, playing at least one tie now in 10 of the last 11 years. Nineteen-year-old Kirsten Flipkens played a live, deciding doubles rubber last year, but is not match-ready yet because of a recurring back injury, according to Maes. Evelyne Van Hyfte, who begins this best-of-five against Davenport, and Leslie Butkiewicz have never played a Fed Cup rubber.

The match-up is so lopsided that the president of the Belgian tennis federation all but ceded victory to the Americans at Friday’s draw and said they should win the entire event this year.

Now, there are some chinks in the US armor. Serena Williams is not likely to play this weekend because of an injured left ankle. Davenport withdrew in her last match because of a hip inury, and Venus was feeling under the weather at Friday’s draw. Davenport shrugs off the hip issue; Venus says she will be fine come Saturday; and Serena could play if necessary.

The United States is 3-0 in Fed Cup play against Belgium. Their last meeting was a 4-1 American decision at the 2003 semifinals in Moscow.

Davenport Sends USA Into Semifinals
World number-one Lindsay Davenport began this Fed Cup first round tie in Delray Beach, Florida with a quick and impressive victory. She closed it out with another in Sunday’s first reverse singles rubber.

In a match-up of the No.1 singles players, Davenport defeated Els Callens 6-4 6-0. It was much more of a struggle, though, than her dismantling of Eveline Vanhyfte on Saturday.

Davenport struggled early in windy conditions, but settled late in the first set. She then opened the second by breaking to love, and then never looked back. Davenport, who has now won 23 consecutive Fed Cup rubbers, used three aces to hold to love to finish off Callens.

The Americans move on to face Russia in the semifinals the weekend after Wimbledon. The US has won their three previous Fed Cup encounters, the last of which came in the 1999 final. But the July meeting will most likely be on clay, which is not the American’s strongest surface.

Venus Williams will now play Leslie Butkiewicz in a dead singles rubber followed by Davenport and Corina Morariu against Callens and Kirsten Flipkens.

In BBC Tennis article, it says this:

Davenport, who has won her last 23 Fed Cup matches, said that the Williams sisters have promised her they would travel to Russia for the semi-final.

"When we were walking on court, I made them promise they would go," said Davenport.

"That's assuming we all stay healthy. It would be a special tie. We're all looking forward to it."

 seems like she has taken charge of the team and is making sure that the Williams stick to their word ;) Lindsay's got the power! :D

So you have it all planned out in your head? ;)

I can see Lindsay as future Fed Cup captain. She's always loved playing events that reprisent her counrty, that's why the lympic gold meant so much to her! She has the experience and she has proved over and over again, that she is a great player - particularly in Fed Cup, where I think her winning streak now in Fed Cup matches is like 25 in a row! That is some going!

Go Lindsay! :woohoo:

I'm so excited for the summer season.....the sun is shining in the UK where I live and it just reminds me of Wimbledon time........where Lindsay will kick some butt ;) :D
