View Full Version : Hingis said "If I had Maria's serve there'd be no doubt i'd be back"

The puts into question all this "i'm not fit to play because my ankles hurt nonsense, and sounds more like she doesn't want to be pounced on from the top fifty on up. :wavey: :tape:

I think she's more than capable of making a sucessful comeback, and I'm still hoping she will, but for right now she said she's keeping that a secret.

What it sounds like is obsession :hearts: And when she said that while she was commentating, it was said in jest, while she was laughing, with the focus on Maria's serve, not about Hingis making a return. :wavey:

"obsession?" she's obsessed w/Maria's serve? And she said it after MJ asked her about WTT, and any possibility of a return to the WTA...she said it was "..a secret" which implies she hasn't ruled it out the followed it up w/the comment on having Maria's serve which meant if i had a serve like that, it'd be no question...

I'm hoping the intepretive skills of the board isn't a reflection of the gen. population, because that would truly be another indication of the dumbing down of society.

Yeah maybe like Venus she doesn't want to go a year without beating a top 10 player or be a tennis player ranked in the lower half of the top ten for the rest of her career .:wavey: :tape:

Yeah, but the thing is, even if she were half the player Venus is, she still wouldn't ranked in the top 10 because at this point, she can't even beat anyone ranked in the top 100. :o

See? It's quite clear that DA FOREHAND has a Hingis hatred obsession. She's even in his signature! To make it clear to everyone yet again, the quote in the title of this thread is taken totally out of context, she was clearly joking around.

Oh phooey on Hingis.

We real tennis fans know Hingis can still play and compete but she is a coward and afraid to lose. Justine revamped her serve andit seems Elena D is working on hers.. Hingis can as well.

She is just lazy and not a true competitor.

Marlene beat her and she lost all hope, this is not a real champ.

In other words Hingis hates to lose more than the LOVE of the game.:)

Hmm. You guys are on to something. Martina clearly could compete and be Top 10 in the world. I think she did "retire" because she wasn't willing to improve her game to be able to compete at the top and win Slams.

In any case, I hope she re-evaluates and comes back. I didn't like her for much of her career as she was a rival for Graf and (to a lesser extent) S. Williams. BUT I miss her so much in hindsight. The game needs her!

This is so stupid. Hingis had ankle surgery on both ankles in a span of what? 7 months? And she came back after the second one looking like she had not moved her feet in a very long time. It's amazing what crack head theories people here come up with  Although it's interesting how Hingis fans have long gotten over her retirement but the Hingis haters still obsess over it every day. :haha:

Unfortunately DA FOREHAND's childish obsession is because of two numbers: 10-9 :wavey:

I think Martina would return to tennis If she had Maria's serve cause she wouldn't have to run as much cause she would be winning many free points on serve!

But thats just my opinion

Deja Entendu is perfectly right.I don't know if Da Forehand is obssesive about Martina but he is acting ignorant about her serious injury. It took the top especialist in ankle surgery to operate on her in Germany.I remember quite well that before the surgery the Dr. stated that this would be it,that she will be lucky enough to walk normally but no chance of returning to play.A two torn ligament injury is one to guarantee retirement fron a lot of sports. The surgeon made it clear that she'd be able to practice a maximun of two hours before severe inflamation and pain set in.Due to pressure from sycophantic journalists once in a while she feels obliged to tantalize fans with phrases like "maybe I'll come back..>

FOREHAND - Isn't this obsession with a retired player a little .. well Republican? You sound like Trent Lott railing about the evils of Bill Clinton. Nobody's going to change their opinion of Hingis. She was a great player, who suffered career ending injuries. Sure she could come back and be #950. Why? Andrea Jaeger could have done that too. Why, though?

Nothing you say or do will prove she was better or worse than anyone else. The severity of her injuries doesn't change based on your obsession with her. She's yesterday's news. Let. It. Go.

Lets try and look at this from her angle (well i'll try)
Since birth you've been trained to be No.1 player in the world that's literally what has been ingrained in to her mentallity, obviously this is similar to the Williams sister but they weren't in the level of competition that Hingis was at that early age, French Open junior champ at 12! etc etc Wta debut at 14 and so on.
She made great impacts, broke records moved swiftly up the rankings everything happening as it was supposed to as she was programmed to do from such a early age.
Just a quick question here then, Could she or any of the prodigies actually enjoy this? Did Hingis actually really apppreciate her 1997 year, did Graf really enjoy 1988 and so on. Players like these know that there going to win slams, when it happens is the victory as sweet as say a player who obviously knows there a good player but too win a slam they knew they could do but maybe had some self doubt?? Mary pierce? Myskina? Sue Barker? Kuznetsova? Sabatini? Novotna?
So when Hingis was dominating it was self expected she felt comfortable with it she was only achieving what she was meant to all along, When the more powerful players came along, we saw all of her competitiveness trying all sorts of tactics and fitness regimes to compete at the highest level.
Playing more tournaments than most to keep hold of the top ranking, something which may have attributed to her injuries. Thats how much she loved the game and wanted to be theorretically the best by being classified No.1 if in many eyes it was Venus.Serena and Lindsay.
I don't think there is any doubt that Hingis loves the game but how much must it hurt to have these career threatneing injuries, be simply overpowered by players who you have more skill then in your little finger etc etc
Who knows what goes through her mind when watching or commentating as she does now, how would we feel to watch a game we once dominated and were programmed to be the best in from such an early age now longer be a part of.
WTA whore said she reitred because she wasn't willing to improve her game. How many times did we see her try to do this, can we blame her for wanting to rest after 2 ankle operations and maybe hitting a brick wall in terms of what more she could do to be thes best or at least compete.
How many of us want to go onto a tennis court against people knowingly underprepared knowing you could definitely at least have a good match if not beat your opponent but instead loose convincingly! I definitley wouldnt even though I love to play and it's the same for Hingis and there's no questioning her love of the game.
Plus she would have millions of people analysing her every move and any attempted comeback would intense this.
