Family Circle Magazine and State Farm Celebrate Henin-Hardenne's Giving Spirit

Over the past thirteen years, the Player Who Makes A Difference award has been given annually to a woman professional tennis player who knows that giving has its own reward. Since 1992 thirteen women athletes have been honored not for what they did on the playing field but what they did off the court. This year Justine Henin-Hardenne will become a member of this elite group of young women for her efforts in making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate by receiving the 2005 Family Circle / State Farm "Player Who Makes A Difference" award winner.

With the loss of her mother to cancer, Justine knows first hand the pain a family experience when a loved one is diagnosised with the disease. In 2003 when Justine raised the women's championship trophy at Roland Garros it was with a sense of both happiness and sadness. It was at that same stadium years earlier that she had shared a dream of winning Roland Garros with her mother and sharing that victory with her mother that day would have made it even more memorable. Following that victory in Paris, Justine decided she wanted to make a difference in the lives of other people who are faced with battling cancer.

In December of 2003 Henin-Hardenne launched "Justine's Winners' Circle" in Belgium, which is a foundation dedicated to helping provide children living with cancer some joy and help in their lives. Over the past year she was worked with her foundation on a number of different events, all aimed at giving children with cancer a sense of hope and courage. The foundation helps organize special events throughout the year that give kids experiences outside of the sterile environment of hospitals and treatment centers where they can laugh, play and feel like kids again.
