I would've made Maria beating Serena as an upset @ Wimby.

The Kim - Lina match was in Toronto not Montreal :) For sure that match was a shocker and the only time Kim lost before the SFs that year (ironically the first tournament with #1 Rank)

compared to Marianne Deswardt beating Steffi Graf none of these were really surprising.......

Patty Schnyder beating Serena at the FCC in 2002 was a nice little upset because Serena had smoked patty in their previous meetings and Serena was comming off of a hot streak winning Scottdale and Miami in a row.

The Vera loss was the beginning of the end for Venus, IMO

Nos. 3, 4 and 5.

Marlene because she was down 2-6 0-3 15-40.
Virginia because Martina used to win these matches until then.
Jana because she was not in good form which she proved in the 2nd round.

there was something about that match, that somehow, was NOT a surprise. Hingis was really in decline then.

i'd have to say, Kandarr's first round shocking of Mauresmo, who had just won Rome and Berlin and was THE favorite going into RG '01. And Kandarr was a player who did little or nothing else of note during an 8 year career.

Marlene was amazing... def. Defending Champ, and what a match that was!

I voted for Kandarr over Mauresmo too:) She was THE top player on clay leading up to the FO & just collapsed. Kandarr was not a great player and one would have never given her a chance to take a set.

I didn't vote for Vivi's win over Hingis b/c I think she was an accomplished player, with experience in big matches from doubles. I watched that match & she played pretty good.

Add... a heavily slumping Hantuchova! :(

Um, what about Barbara Schett beating Venus in the first round of RG in 01? Venus was the reigning Wimbledon and US Open champion and had won a warm-up tournament on clay.

There's also Capriati over Hingis in the final of the Aussie in 01.

I think that there have been so many big upsets at majors this decade that it's kind of pointless to include upsets from other tournaments.

Also Hingis, Capriati, and Henin-Hardenne were all injured or sick in their upset losses.

i'd say there must've been more shocking upsets this millenium that you didn't list although i'm not willing to scan the record books to find them, i picked weingartner over cappy because it was 1st rd and jenny was 2 time defending, but there were reasons/excuses for almost all these losses, which makes them less "upsetting"

I voted Martina/Vivi.

But Amelie losing first round to a nobody after she had beaten all the best players during the clay court season was very strange.

for me it was Jana Kandarr over Mauresmo
because everyone expected her to win the title and then she lost against Kandarr

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO:fiery: :fiery: :fiery: . The third millenium started in 2001. The first year of the first millenium was AD 1. A millenium is a set of 1000 years. Therefore, the 1000th year was AD 1000. The second millenium began therefore in 1001. The 1000th year after that was AD 2000, the end of the second millenium. The third millenium thus began in AD 2001.

Hingis' loss to Vivi was shocking, because Hingis just didn't lose to people other than the big hitters at the time (Cappy/Venus/Davenport.) There wasn't an excuse for that match either. The Mauresmo match probably comes in a close second, because she had won a thousand claycourt matches that season, and no one knew of her mental fragility at home back then (she had won two French tournaments earlier in the year...)

Though not on the scale of these, I still find the Sharapova - Davenport match a shocker, though Davenport being #1, I guess rules this out as an upset lol! I think I'm still pretty shaken by this result:sad:
