Now that is weird. After reading Maria's post match interview today. THe interviewer asked her, her thoughts on playing Kim or Mauresmo. She said she remembered playing Kim long ago. But she also said she never played Amelie. That is a weird statement. How should she forget her only loss on her way to winning last seasons Year End Championships...

that is funny she played kim in 2003, but she played Mauresmo at the end of last year 4 or so months ago.

I would much rather forget the bagel Kim handed her than the Mauresmo loss. LOL

Well. Yes Sharapova lost to Mauresmo but she considers it an exhibition since she was already in the YEC semis from her wins against Kuznetsova and Zverareva.

The YEC match was not important, since both Maria and Momo had already qualified for the Semis. It was like a dead rubber. So, since nothing was hanging on it, Maria probably treats it in her mind as an exhibition match.

Yeah well, Maria also never remembers playing Justine before 2 days ago.

Q. When you see Justine in the same quarter of the draw, does that make you feel anxious to play her? Have you played her yet?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, I don't remember playing her, no. But, you know, every match I'm expecting a tough one. You know, right now I'm just worried about my next one.

But then again, this was only an exhibition match and Maria lost in a very controversial manner (something about her having been robbed and cheated or something and Justine made another amazing comeback). Maria was very upset (there may have been tears) and she did not attend the ceremony after the match.

Anyway, lots of matches in one year. Maybe is not so unreasonable that some match-ups are forgotten.

Anyway, more chardonnay for me now. :drink:

and it wasn't very close either.......what an odd thing to forget. she hasn't won that many competitions - I suppose though as it didn't count as she made the SF anyway she just may have blanked it.

Contrary to popular belief here...the match STILL counted and Maria has never before defeated Amelie..or Kim for that matter.

I keep hearing now about her feeling cheated or robbed or whatever, but at the time there wasn't any talk of that sort. She blew like 8 matchpoints and she was probably pissed, but it was just an exo. Was there a bad call or something?

This stuff is weird from Maria though. She seemed trained by IMG to say all the right things last year but this year she's saying more and more silly things.

I am not really sure, viggen. The information I have is second-hand, I am afraid. Somebody (I can't remember who) was kind enough to explain what had happened through comments Maria had made after the match. But it was all very vague and weird. I'll see whether I can find the thread where this was discussed.

I think it shows just how much like a young Monica Maria is - and I think that's as far as the analogy goes.

Her game is no more similar to Monica's than about 50 other players, but she just has this tremendous ability to look forward. I don't see why she'd lie about not remembering her loss to Mauresmo last year - I think she's simply blotted it out.

When Maria loses a point, she just gets on with it. When she loses a match, she does the same. Like there's no such thing as yesterday.

Seles did that better than anybody not only in her heyday, but after a 0&0 loss of her own -- to Hingis -- in 2000. She went on to have one of her best post-comeback years.

There are many cultural differences between Russians and Americans that contribute to many fans on this board complaining about Maria, Nastya or Sveta's emotions being "fake". Many non-Russian tennis fans can't relate to their reactions on and off-court. The opposite is also true. Most Russians who have never been abroad consider the smiles of Americans who visit Russia as fake and deliberate.

She actually didn't play even though she played... I mean.. she ensured her place in the finals in YEC... and then she had to save her energy for the finals. So she basiclaly didn't at all in that match... You should watch it... it was noticeable that Maria wasn't playing at all...
