She didn't do anything special, she just went to the Venus forehand which every player does.Hell Mary Pierce beat Venus at the Olympics last year. This match vey much reminded of the second set of the US Open when Venus had an oppurtunity to break but couldn't.

It's not about who she beat, it's about the performance and she was basically flawless today. The best match she has ever played, including Wimbledon.

But you are right that Maria did not "play the match of her life"!

She is capable of much, much better.:worship:

This isn't really a good defense for Venus if that's what you are looking for

Maria won, Venus lost, I'm not happy with it, but I'm happy with various portions of Venus' game and attitude. We've known for some time she needs to work on her forehand, serve, etc., she just needs to get down to it.

I'm happy with how Venus played today, but she lost.

Agreed. Venus didn't play poorly today. Maria was just too dominant today. Especially on serve.

The fact that people have to say that Maria played the match of her life against a woman who is supposed to be as "has-been", ranked number 8 (as of Monday) is a compliment as far as I am concerned. It means that she knew she had to bring her play up another notch to beat Venus and she did. But we all know what happenes when players play the match of their lives against Venus....

Well, if you consider how many times Venus has won a Grand Slam tournament in the past four years.....fairly well I'd assume.

You act as if Venus is the worst player in the top ten because hse has not won a GS in four years. The top player has not won one in five and only got to a fnal for the first time in five years this year. Venus has the ability to win a Slam again and she just might.

I think that the reason why many claim it's the best they've seen Sharapova play is because of the following reasons:

1. She was dictating play the entire match moving Venus side to side
2. SHe had 12 errors in 19 games. That is Hingis like, and she did it while dictating play and going for the lines.
3. She fought and dug deep near the end of the match to be able to finish Venus off.
4. No way did Venus play poorly, she definitely played very well and served extremely well, and as well as she did against Serena two nights ago. She was just not getting those short balls to come into the net.
5. It was consistent hitting, consistent power-hitting.

It is NOT the best match of Sharapova's career in my opinion. I thought she played better in the Wimbledon final and in her match against Hantuchova at Wimbledon. However, I can understand why people think that it was such a great performance. It really was power bashing at it's best today. Some of those rallys were just amazing. The way she saved one of the break points when she and Venus were both screaming their heads off, that was amazing.

Some of you guys really know how to spoil a good tennis match, with all this hate and negitivity. The truth of the matter is, is Maria played solid clean tennis and Venus made to many unforced eras. Venus is only going to get better as the year goes along. Maria has to keep this form of for and entire year. I hope she does because it should be some fun stuff torwards the US Open. Especially if all the top 8 players advance to the quarter finals.

omG, i agree with liz. davenport, mauresmo, molik, and zvonareva have nothing over venus in slams in recent history and certainly nothing over her in the longrun.

Tanked? She didn't have a break point until Maria was serving for the match. I mean, she could've played a bit better on certain points, but she was at a high level anyway. Venus and all tennis players are human, and it is extremely rare when someone takes advantage of all their opportunities. The reality of it is that Venus was playing well, although not perfect, and it was still a two set win, which is why people say Maria played a great match.

Damn Straight, Serving to stay in the match at 4-5 serving well and STILL cant come up with a way to hold? Seven break points in the second set (including triple break point) and you still cant find your way to net to close the shit off? Thats unacceptable:fiery:

That's why we fans of Venus are very satisfied with Venus' play today, because she was just below flawless today. Maria played almost perfectly and she won because Vee played a couple of loose points twice to lose serve. So, it was in the cards for Maria and not for Venus, because it could have been the other way around easily with the way both were playing.

Masha played well. She was focussed and aggressive throughout the match. She kept the errors right down, hit ferocious forehands and returns of serve, and made very few errors in clutch situations.

It was a very good match. One of her best performances so far, against a good opponent.

Comparing with the Wimbledon Final, she was slightly more dominant at Wimbledon, but her serve did get broken once there, so its a toss-up.

This is probably one of the best matches that Maria ever played. No one gave her a chance, except for Maria fans, to beat Venus who had just beaten Serena. Venus' tennis has improved this tournament, so there was a lot of expectation that she would win. Even Maria acknowledged in her post-match interview, that Venus is a tough competitor and that a player has to bring their A game to beat her. Yes, I realize that Maria is higher ranked than Venus, but considering how well Venus plays in Miami and considering that Maria had just gotten double-bagelled in her last tournament, this was a great win.

You're correct, because Venus had more winners than Maria and if she had not made so many UE's she would have won.

Venus had 22 winners to Maria's 11, and Venus had 24 errors to Marias 12.

Maria answered the question that letting Serena off the hook at the AO raised as well as drawing a line under the bagels. Venus was playing better than she has for years and had the opportunity to attack and get the match back. This time Maria dug in.

Apart from taking that step on, her shots and her stats were brilliant and she seems to be thinking more and beat Venus a lot with her head today.

Why do you keep emphasizing that somehow Maria choked or let Serena win or Serena won by luck? You know as well as I do, that Serena raised her level of play and whipped Marias ass at the end of that match. Maria couldn't think straight with all the winners whizzing by her at match point. So, don't even go there. You need to just accept fact and stop being such a sore loser about it.

I'm talking about this board. The day that Venus beat Serena. Everyone was saying that Maria really didn't have a prayer. I'm well aware enough of what the rankings say, but I wasn't referring to that. Besides, Venus is a 4 time grand slam champion and Miami has always been a great tournament for her. I never viewed Venus as an underdog myself.
