THAT HAS HAPPENED SOO MANY TIMES. Verse Lindsay at the US Open, and against Myskina at the French, break points when her opponent is serving for the match. ANd she can't win it!:fiery:

Same score as last time. Venus just couldn't keep up with Maria's high level of play.

She missed way too many returns I thought also.

And she played well at 15-15, or 15-30, but never on game points or 30-30.

 6 frickin' break points.

Even tho there was little Venus could do on most of them, Maria was just too tough.

Congrats to Maria! I feared after the Davenport debacle at IW that she would have a meltdown here. That does not appear to be the case. This is a really good win for Maria. Now she is in her second tier 1 final of the year!

Also congrats to Venus. She played very well in this tournament!

Both players played well. The difference is that Venus didn't take her opportunities and she had more UE's than Maria did. Believe me, Venus could have won the match had she did what I said, but she didn't.

She didn't win the title, but she had a great tournament because she got father than I tought she would.

Venus only started playing during the last two games or so. I was surprised she was tentative from the beginning. If she had been aggressive from the beginning she would have taken the match. I think it's a boost to her confidence that she can go toe-to-toe with the 3rd ranked player in the world. Hopefully her next tournament will be an even bigger improvement than this one.

I am sooo hurting right now :o -that whole time w/ the deuce/ad points--it reminded me of the davenport match last year. They both played extremely well minus the many unforced errors from Venus. Sharapova looked like she deserved to win because she just didn't make any mistakes. I'm still :fiery: though, but I'll get over it in a day or two. Keep it up Venus I saw YOU out there this week and I hope you keep moving forward. keep:cool:

Venus can look back at two things in this match that cost her:
FOREHAND & RETURN OF SERVE.

Her forehand is still way too INCONSISTENT...one min amazing shot, next min very ugly. Also her return were just awful today. I don't think Maria did anything special today...she simply had to be steady and keep going after Vee's FH and it worked.

The best part of this match was Vee's serving. She was really going after her second serves and she was placing the ball really well on her first serves.

She seems to have fixed the serve problem...NOW FIX THE FH

Maria played the best match I've ever seen from her. I can't believe she kept it up for the whole match, she really played outstanding and would have beaten anyone today.

Venus served really well and that last game was . She should have been a little more agressive on the BPs in the last game, but on those points Sharapova served so well that there was nothing she could do. She really started to play close to her best too late in the match.

Maria is the real deal, she earned it today. I just wish she didn't play the match of her life against dear Venus, but that's okay. Venus has a lot of positives to take from this match and especially the entire tournament.

Good luck next tournament Venus and congrats Maria.

The way Venus was playing the beginning of the year, I didn't think she could, but she did.

BTW, 6-4, 6-3 isn't that routine of a win, epsecially when you have to fight off six break points to win.

And yes, I thought if Serena got the SF, she could have beaten Maria.

It reminded me WAY too much of Venus' 4th round match at last year's USO against Lindsay.

Toe to toe first set, then played a loose game to lose the set 7-5, got down an early break in the second, fought all the way, but never had a break point on Lindsay's serve. Then the last game, she plays an amazing game, seems to be defending the best she had all match long, had I think around 5 break points to level the match, but couldn't.

I think if she woulda converted the BP's from today's match it would have gotten her over that hump. She still needs to play better on the really important points.

Good fighting tho from Vee.:)

Yes that loose game in the first set was not needed. She should have zero'ed in and focused.

Also she needs to learn to blunt/bunt back those cannon serves maria throws at her.

The forehand has needed fixing for awhile now I doubt it will happen. She needs to do something though. When everyone knows your weakness the sharks smell blood.

The match was close than the score indicates. Venus should have focused earlier in the second set and should not have given up a loose game in the first.

She will learn and come back stronger this has been a great tournament for her. She took out a higher seed and a player she hasnt beaten in six attempts. She will have a plan for maria next time I hope.

Ok guys I think this is my first post ever. Have been watching tennis since 1987. Have followed Seles' game very closely and always thought Monica was the definition of intensity. Sharapova today reminded me of Monica completely. Her entire game (the angles, the backhand) are so reminiscent of Monica. She indeed is the real deal.

Btw, Venus was very gracious at the net. Sharapova needs to learn that from Monica as well - a little bit of grace and humility.

Get your head out of the Williams' butt. If Maria didn't do anything then you should stop watching tennis cause you don't know a thing about tennis. Venus has been playing tennis for 20 odd years and still got that forehand...nothing's gonna change now..lol Just make way for the younger folks. Venus is what.. 25 yo?

True but then Maybe she shouldn't dump her forehand in the net. Its that simple. If you have a bad shot do something to fix it. Or have something else that compensates. Venus was outplayed. Howevever she could have won that match which is a good sign. Its not like she didnt have her chances.

They were both serving well, Maria kept it for longer. Venus had a few opportunities in the last game, but taking advantage of those woul've just made her even in the second, still behind in the match. Too solid from Maria today.

Maria was just more solid on the important points.

Yes. Maria held serve without giving up a break point until the final game. Venus held serve solidly early on, and then had aberrations.

Maria didn't come to net a lot. She has been against easier opponents, but chickened a little this match.

Maria's second serve again held her in good stead. She won nearly 70% of points on it.

YEAH! Well done Masha! Amazing win!
Fantastic service, fantastic ability to rise from 0-40 and save those break points! (but why did she arrive at the point of having to save bps??? grrr.... this has still to be improved...)
Now good luck for the final!!!

maria played her best ever tennis and one of the best matches from a woman since 3 years today! venus should not be downcast - she played so well and it was just maria played the match of her life - even better than Wimbledon, IMO!

I knew this was going to be a hard match for Venus is she didnt play her game well. I knew the unforced errors would break her if she had them...because Maria is not going to make that many unless you u run her. But anyway...I hope Maria goes on to win it..because she is my honorary williams sister...(she tries to mimic them anyway) I hope to see Venus and Serena in another FINAL in the near future.

Outstanding play from Maria! :worship: :)
Venus made a bit too many errors in the beginning, but what a battle that last game was. Love to see two players who are able to improve their game the tougher it gets.
Congrats, and best of luck for the final Masha! :)
And thanks again to both girls for a great match. Had a good time here watching it to the very exciting end.

Only Serena has beaten Maria...twice.

Venus and Maria have played twice (including today)...Maria is 2-0 against Venus.

Wow, how intense was that last game  I wanted it to go to a third set just to see how Maria would react but congrats to her, she played out of her mind today :worship: It's a shame that Venus only managed to raise her game to Maria's level when it was too late but nevertheless, Venus should be proud of her achievements in this tourny :yeah:

The one thing that really stood out for me in this match was the quality of serving  So impressive from both players. And then Venus stepped up and hammered down an ace to save a match point  That WAS impressive!

The Eurosport commentators didn't annoy me today actually. Usually Chris Bradnam is practically salivating over Sharapova when he's calling her matches but I think it was Simon Reed today (I get them confused ). One thing that did annoy me was that he kept saying Maria won Wimbledon at 16 :smash:

It was a great match. Not much in it until 4-4 first set. Venus served very well (power, placement, angles) at the start but to me the key was in the next 6 games. Masha stepped it up made no mistakes and piled on incredible pressure. Venus simply couldn't match her at that moment; the serve and forehand went and the match was gone. In the last couple of games, I thought Venus was incredibly gutsy and played some wonderful uninhibited points. Masha held on though and resisted the pressure to produce some fine tennis of her own. She deserved to win in straight sets today, to my mind.

Venus played her best match in years. High service percentage, great success as net, as many winners as unforced. But it ain't 2001, Sharapova merely played solid and whipped her ass. Next time it will be 6-2 6-1 Maria. Congrats Masha!!!

Now, go Kimmy! :hearts:

She will never beat Venus 6-2, 6-1. Even last year when Venus wasn't playing her best, she lost to Maria 6-4, 6-3, so I don't see a beating like that coming from her against Venus anytime soon, maybe never.

Reading this thread allows me to come up with two conclusions. Venus fans are extremely gracious in defeat. Meanwhile, there seems to be a group of just Williams haters that will jump on any player's bandwagon when they beat the Williams. Venus is still improving and getting her game back to her normal level. This match also has nothing to do with Serena. Saying her win in Australia is a fluke is just stupid. I can now see why some Williams fans gets so offended by "Sharapova fans." However, let me say in truth that those are not real Sharapova fans, and if they are, they are not indicative of the majority of Sharapova fans. These people I think will go into any thread and say the same thing if a Williams lost. It's quite sad.

Well done Masha.

I didn't see the match but I taped it. I got in to switch channels from ESPN to ESPN2 at 3pm EST in case the match was still being played. I rewound the tape a bit and it doesn't look like ESPN interviewed Maria after her win and they went to commercial as Cliff Drysdale was talking about the match. That was bush league. :( Did ESPN interview Maria?

But she's a great player. I can't wait for Justine to come back on full strength, so she and Vee can make Maria's life real hard ...

Goe,

You have to consider the source. Liz is so ANTI-Maria that the Royal Court won't even take her.

She'll attempt to bait you into arguments.

That BS about being a junior vs senior member here doesn't hold water. Everyone's opinions are respected.

You might want to consider shunning her, or put her on your ignore list if she begins harrassing you too often.

You'll get the hang of things.

I noticed. It's pathetic.

That BS about being a junior vs senior member here doesn't hold water. Everyone's opinions are respected.

Time for her to get off her imaginary high horse I think. And to be honest it was just a desperate and pathetic comeback because she had nothing else better to say (like that'll be a surprise).

You might want to consider shunning her, or put her on your ignore list if she begins harrassing you too often.
