Elena lost against to Clijsters... 6/2 6/1
I'm really fed up with all those thrashings against the top players.

Stop hiding your head in the sand, Elena ! As long as you don't improve your serve you won't win any big event and beat the best players. How can you hope to win when you hold only 25-30% of your serve games ? You must even struggle against ordinary players less talented than you just because of your serve, thus losing a lot of energy before the important matches. I'm sure it isn't that difficult for you to get a decent serve (it was much better at the end of last year). I don't know if you need to work harder or change your coach, but please IMPROVE YOUR SERVE !! If not, it will be very hard to stay long in the top 10...

Well ,Elena has beaten plenty of top players too so its not all bad, and it was not the serve that cost her yesterday ,she just made way to many errors and played a bad game ,the worst she has for quite some time ,it happens.

Lena obviously needs a better serve ,but she IS working on it and its gonna take time ,her speeds in the kim match were ok ,about a par with Kim herself and she actually had a slightly higher 1st serve percentage ,but obviously 8DFs a little high.

The UEs killed her ,42 or so not the serve ,kim got very few UEs yesterday ,but she had loads against Nastya ,so it happens to em all ,Lena simply played shit tennis yesterday ,just like Masha did with Davenport when she got bageled!!

You're right in a way, but with a better serve she could compensate a little her bad days...

I'm waiting for Lindsay, Amelie, Maria, Kim, Serena and the others to be dementinated again very soon !!

With the exception of Serena, I dont feel the other four of them girls are too hot on clay... ;) This is where Lena needs to be picking up some scalps!

I only saw the second set, but that looked like the bad old Lena of '03 and early '04. She was visibly nervous, frustrated, wasn't hitting shots with confidence and looked to be near tears at times. Not at all the player she's been since the '04 FO.

I hope this was a one time deal and not the start of another slump.

Looked to me she was back to her old habit of putting her serves all in the same part of the court.

On the other hand, there's no question that Clijsters knows how to play Lena. Some players just match up really well against others. Clijsters and Myskina always make Lena look bad. Hopefully, Kim's rapid return to form will move her up enough in the rankings that she doesn't get to play Lena before the semis or the finals.

Let's still hope for a doubles trophy.

anyone can have an off day.but if lena believed she was going to win she would have done better.she won't admit it but a lack of confidence hinders her in big moments sometimes.she is 5 in the world.she can beat anybody but needs to believe she can do it.

Well, I think that she believed that she could win.
But sometimes you can't play well. I know it: one day, I was playing volleyball (i'm pretty good at it), and I just couldn't do anything. It was horrible. Only when I hit the ball it flew somewhere.

Well said Ronaldo, everyone can have an off-day ag. any player, even the Williamses, Sharapova or any other top players, it's tennis so it's normal, i believe we can see the real Lena soon!! :bounce:

Well it seems not only I was mad when I saw the result and the stats (serve) But seriously speaking I think it was one of days when the sun wasn't shining bright 4 Lena. Over 40 UE-s is rare thing for Lena.It let her down and she didn't care about serve. Probably it was a match like:
1. 0/6 5/7 loss to Raymond
2. 1/6 4/6 loss to Dulko
3. 1/6 4/6 loss to Jankovic
4. 3/6 1/6 loss to Schnyder
Sometimes it happens and you can only do
Get well soon Lena :D

Well, she lost again - but she is not jet "fit" after the "Asian Adventure" earlier this year. Just the complet recovery (inclusive re-training) of the injury of the right hand should take at least six weeks. But, she was there again to play after 3 weeks. "Neo - Liberalism" or "robbery" against her own body ? She went now somehow in a "circulus vitiosus". But, who is going to stop it ?

Hmm.... yes, very disappointing Elena. I'd say at least 3 or 4 games in both sets would've been the minimum acceptability.

But I, as should the rest of you, take much comfort in the fact that Kim has just destroyed Amelie in even more devastating fashion. At least we can't say she didn't lose to a red hot player. And take into account, Kim is just one of those players who Elena doesn't match up well against.

Sure, we should be upset over this, but let's not get TOO angry. Mind you, I've had a few days to get over it.

Heyy,
I never think that beating Amelie is so difficult to our Elena. But what about Serena ,Maria & others? Do u still feel that it is only Service-problem?
I think Elena is less-confident  . I have posted my opinion even in my past thread & i still feel so.
Elena is reaaly a good player :D ,but she should increase her confidence.
What about u?

I'd say there is a mind problem against Serena. Last year in the Tour Championships, Serena was crippled, and Elena still didn't take a set.

There isn't so much of a problem against the others though. Last year, Elena took out Venus and Jennifer, two players she'd failed to beat before. Elena took a set off Maria last year in Zurich, and beat her this year in HK. Not sure what to think of Kim though, considering she destroyed all her other opponents too.

So mentally, I think Elena is gaining confidence. She realises she belongs in the top ten. She probably could still improve in that area though, and that would be because of the serve. When your serve can destroy you irregardless of how good the rest of your game is, its hard to be confident.

You know, I think Clijsters is what the Germans call 'ein Angstgegner' for Elena. Apart from their first meeting Lena has barely won a set versus Kimy.
Btw: if you wan't me to explain Angstgegner, just ask, cause I suppose this word means nothing to people that speak English. ;)

Ein Angstgegner is somebody you always have a hard time against, and who often defeats you even though you might be a better player than him or her.
Worst part of it is that there is hardly an explanation for why you always have such a hard time performing against this player.

Last year Lena lost 1-6, 1-6 to Serena.
Lena made 2 of the next 3 slam finals. Serena made 1.
What happened in Miami means nothing at RG.

I disagree

Lena had hard times against Jen (Capriati) and when appear the "KEY" time (match) Lena won
Jen has a game very looks like Kim
Kim looks like Lena, except for the agressive part, Kim dont have too much power

What I think about Lena is that she needs try more hard
Like she did with Jen in USO
And, IF LEna meet Kim in RG finals this year, I could bet my ass on Lena!!

It's a matter of "How hard she wants something"
If she realy wants, she will do
Like in USO, when she was very bad, but she still won 2 matchs against 2 top players (besides that was HARD matchs)

That's all IMO ;)

Like Dokic was almost always losing to "Great Mandula Ghost", Federer to Nalbandian and Dokic to Davenport (Lindsay leads 9/0 in H2H probably)

I think "nemesis" would be the English word that comes closest. Kim is definitely one of those for Lena.

Yep I definitely believe this... players such as Clijsters and Davenport are not the same threat on clay.

I don't really think it's a matter of wanting to, because if anyone wants to it's her, you know. I think it might still be that lack of confidence, esspecially versus Kimy.

In French people would say that Kim is Lena's "bęte noire" ("black beast")...
