For anyone unfamiliar with this program, it's a half-hour sports discussion show on ESPN featuring a bunch of sports reporters (men, of course) discussing various topics. Most of the time they talk about the NFL, NBA or MLB.
They had a year-end discussion this year. One part involved what they thought was the big sports story of the year.
I thought they were going to talk about baseball (the World Series, Barry Bonds, etc.).
Instead, two of the reporters (out of three plus the host), chose women's tennis stories. One guy chose Venus Williams' "domination" of women's tennis (being black in a white-dominated sport, repeating her big titles, etc.). The other guy, who I think was Bill Conlin, chose Jennifer Capriati's comeback story.
And then came the part that made me laugh: The guy that chose Venus started to argue with Conlin over his choice of Jenny...saying that Venus didn't take drugs and stuff like that.
Then Conlin said a few things and then something like "You don't have to start an argument over it. It's just my opinion. For me, Capriati was the story that touched me."
It was just amusing seeing a bunch of male sports reporters who normally don't discuss tennis discuss women's tennis and get into the same kind of arguments that we get into at WTAWorld.
Wish I taped it.

I think it's on again on ESPN2 at 1:00 or 1:30, or thereabouts.
I saw that bit. Who'd have thought they'd discuss women's tennis in such an "important" context?

LOL! I happened to tune in to that too! I was first shocked they actually mentioned women's tennis at all, then I laughed too at how the guy started arguing. I thought, geez, they represent exactly what seems to go on here! I guess this board is not the only place where Venus fans are on the defensive and Capriati fans are just happy for her...too funny.

Venus fans are on the defensive and Capriati fans are just happy for her...too funny.
All the guy was saying is that Venus is the best without the whole drugs and going to jail thing. Her story was good for the heart how the down-trodden can over come. Now if it was about the sport of tennis Venus is the best. That's what cappy fans hate is she is no where near Venus. It's great she won due to her comebabk story. I LOL at that. When Venus says what's may name cappy know because Venus is all up in her head. So cappy can have the feel go story Vee will take the titles LOL
JC uhm you Cappy fans are defensive all the time imho. Especially when one brings up her attitude and nasty on court demeanor. Noone can bring up her attituted without somebody going off. SO it works both ways buddy. I still can't belive she lost her nerve while playing Monica.
p.s. It is nothing but America and the mainstreamin ways that wish to praise an ex druggie over someone who is better. Screw the "Once I was a problem kid to now I am better". Look it is a great feat but it does not deserve to be the BEST STORY. AINT NO WAY. ESPN is trash. WOnder what we'll see next? Oscar's giving the reward to Robert Downey Jr. because he came back from a addict to sober??rollesyes.

Fo u know how Jennifer secceded to get about seven awards of Spotswoman of the Year? Because she is
Dec 30th, 2001, 08:35 PM
I hope I get to see this show. Doesnt surprise me that someone got all riled up b/c someone thought Jennifer was the story of the year. Well anyways, You GO JENNIFER!! Congrats Jennifer on a great year! You are doing great and you are a threat, otherwise no one would even mention you (even if it is a cutdown)!! Congrats Jennifer!
Dec 30th, 2001, 08:36 PM
Okay then, if Jenny's story wasn't the best story then what was?
Dec 30th, 2001, 08:50 PM
YYYAAWWWNNINNNGGGG at more player arguements
haven't we beat this one to death? Some people think Jenn is the best story of the year, some think Venus is - who cares?
Anyhow - its good that those commentators gave womens tennis some much needed publicity, and props for creating TWO very good sports stories this year.
Dec 30th, 2001, 08:52 PM
Venus' tennis story was 2000, and yes, she repeated that feat this year which is an amazing feat don't get me wrong. But c'mon her story is so passe compared to Jen Caps

Exactly!
Cappy was the more interesting story and VENUS was the best athlete and sportswoman.
So, based on this precedent, if ANNA wins any title she will automatically be Athlete of the Year.

"haven't we beat this one to death? Some people think Jenn is the best story of the year, some think Venus is - who cares?"
I agree completely.
I just thought it was pretty funny to see the guys on the show go at it a bit just like people here do. Obviously I'm a Jen fan, but I do like Venus also (believe it or not!). Maybe it's just a few people, but it seems Venus fans will not let it rest that she's the best. I think most know that is the case. But like Shane said, as a threat to Venus, Jen will continue to be in these arguments. And, well, I guess that's fine with me.

Yeah.. they KNOW it, and they HATE the hell out of it... that's why her, 24/7 faultfinding, bloodthirsty detractors, "WILL NOT LET IT REST".

lol... AIN'T nobody losing sleep over Capriati JC2002. Not me, and for damn sure not Venus Williams.... JC is "in these arguments", cause she's a tennis player, just like Davenport is "in these arguements", just like the Williamses is "in these arguements", just like Justine Henin "is in these arguements", ECT., they will ALL continue to be "in these arguements".

You have issues...

Heavy_Hitta: I respect Venus is your fave and you support her like none other - thats cool.
But sheesh...you should really calm down and take a valium or something.
So far i am yet to see any one "detract" from Venus in this thread. If having a different opinion is considered "detracting" in your eyes, then perhaps that is why I fail to see any at the moment.

JCAP's success is definitely one of the greatest stories in 2001 sportsworld!!! No doubt about it!!!
BTW, its so funny to see ppl trying to argue the same issue over and over again in this forum!!!

Now let's see after May, when did she win another tournment "umm you know well I think, that's it she didn't". Oh yeah she was #1 for a short while kudos to her for that I almost forgot about since davenport ended #1. Story of Tennis LOL I'll give you the comeback angle.

Very funny! I saw that show it was surprising that they would even think of tennis!
Dec 31st, 2001, 08:55 PM
Two separate arguments are going on here: 1. Who was the best tennis player in 2001 and 2. Who or What is the best story of 2001. The same candidate doesn't have to occupy both slots; the best player isn't always going to be the "story" of the year.
I give Venus the edge over Jennifer as best player of 2001 only because Venus dominates their head-to-head. But it's a slight edge because Jennifer performed better than Venus in the 4 slams. And ask any player which year they would prefer, one in which they won 2 slams and reached number one (even if briefly) or one in which they won 2 slams and finished the year number 3, and most would would choose the former.
For story of the year, between the two, I would pick Jennifer. Venus defending her slam titles is impressive, but Venus didn't really do anything in 2001 that she hadn't already done in 2000. Jennifer on the other hand, had the best year of her career, winning slams and reaching number 1 about 8-10 years later than many had predicted she would. This doesn't necessarily make Jennifer the better player of 2001, but for many, it makes her the better "story" of 2001.
So I can easily see how the better player of 2001 isn't the better story. Imagine if, for instance, Monica wins another slam -- there would be little, if anything any other player could do that would bump Monica from garnering story of the year in tennis.

I thought I'll make my debut on this board with a very controversial issue - Who was better in 2001, Venus or Capriati? Well for me Venus' performance this year was better. Most Money, most titles with the least amount of effort inc. two slam titles, best winning %age, and best of all, best head-to-head record. I think when one juxtapose the totality of the efforts of both women, most, if not all would choose Venus' than Capriati's.
Happy New Year to all on this board

Calabar - We've had multiple rows over THAT! Maybe you should view some of the older threads.
Welcome to the board and a Happy New Year to you too.
Anyway, I just created this thread because I found it very amusing that two sports reporters would go at it like we have done. And they were so serious about it. Out of all the sports stories of the year, they chose two different women's tennis stories.
BTW - The other guest reporter said that it was the "year of death." A real downer. No Ryan or Lupica or the over-rated Albom on the show...though I think Lupica would've chosen some Yankee-related thing.
I forgot to mention Conlin's "I'm not knocking Venus' achievements." Also made me chuckle.
