View Full Version : Secret WTA memorandum - banning double-handed BHs???

In the upcoming April issue of German tennis mag "Tennis-Revue" there is a report on a alleged "secret WTA memorandum" discussing measures to "revitalise" women's tennis again.

The most revolutionary idea is to prohibit DOUBLE-handed backhands!!!!

Surveys are said to have proven that many tennis fans - especially older ones - (who have the money to pay expensive tournament tickets) prefer SINGLE-handed back-hand play as more elegant and - quote - "lady-like".

The authors of this memorandum acknowledge that it could be a problem to change the rules as most of today's top players use double-handed BHs. So they recommend to introduce the "single-hand rule" in tier2-or-lower tournaments first. A WTA spokesman - when asked about it by "Tennis-Revue" called the article "pure speculation" ...

Wow, I'd love that!!!

i'd hate it 1 handed backhands are boring. It's only good if they can keep hitting it flat! top spin i find is quite boring and same with the slice!

Oh and I´ve also read in the German Tennis Magazin, that the ATP actually wants to introduce the underhand-serve again, so that the matches get more interesting, serves from above the head will be prohibited, but well, the discussion is still on...let´s see how they decide but the chances are really good!

hell, why stop at 2-handed backhands? I say, the WTA ought to ban ALL backhands. The backhand is an ugly, unladylike shot. They should decree that players are only allowed to hit forehands. Of course, they might need to make the court a little smaller, but there's an idea that would increase the game's appeal tremendously.

Hm...Please stick to the current rules. :)

And bring back wooden rackets! And ankle-length skirts and long sleeves! These 'ho's show way too much skin to be ladylike. No more interviews, either. Proper ladies don't speak out in public. Last, but not least, insist that every lady travel with a parent or other approved chaperone, no matter how completely psychotic that parent may be.

Now that's a plan to increase tennis' appeal.

I always liked Sabby's top-spin and Graf's slice.

THis is pure speculation and in my opinion absolute bullshit! The prohibition of double-handed backhands would mean marginalising a lot of top class players. We would have to give up about a generation of players who currently use DHB's, and do you know what that would entail? The SH backhand is probably one of the most difficult strokes to master. Moreover, the fact that we have both the SH and SH backhands offers the game of tennis a sense of variety. Don't get me worng, I do love seeing Justine's backhand as it is such a lovely shot, but can one actually imagine how monotonous the game of tennis would be if we only used SH backhands?!

PS: Graf's backhand slice was one of the greatest shots of all time, rather unorthodox, but was very effective! Look at the records!

If they ban double-handed backhands, they might as well also have the players play on ice-skates because by the time the ban gets implemented hell will have frozen over.

Tennis officials and organizations cannot regulate tennis players' shot techniques and styles as long as they abide by the basic court rules of the game. It would be like MLB dictating how a batter swings at the ball or the LPGA stipulating how a golfer putts. I do miss the one-handed backhand, however, and look forward to its re-emergence. It's on its way back!

Double handers are more effective now because tennis is more power based.

Graf barely had a backhand. Seles changed the way backhands were percieved, and nobody in their right mind would teach a child a single handed backhand nowadays. (e.g. Richard Williams)
