Creating an avatar. Need help

Would someone tell me how to change a regular jpg image into an avatar?
I tried to use the profile options but somehow it says my image is too big.

You need to reduce the size of your picture using Paint or any picture software you have. And then I find that saving it as a GIF file makes the file smaller than JPG. I hope this helps ;)
