Why is it we can't watch a women's match without Mary Ferdandez drooling all over Maria Sharapova? Mary Jo talked about Maria during Serena's current match more than she did Serena. How many times do we have to hear about the Williams/Sharapova rivilary? Please someone make her stop!

Is she for reals? I'm like a huge Maria fan but there is no more recognizable figure in women's tennis than Serena Williams. Seriously, maybe Maria would be recognized in some areas over Venus, but Serena? No way. She is a huge star in the U.S.

It seems that Cliff Drysdale is not happy with the generated rivalry that he says the WTA is trying to generate between Serena and Maria. It seems that those two need to play more often to consider it a rivalry. Is is true that Maryjoe is Sharapova's mentor?.

you anti-Maria people are just adding fuel to the fire with threads like these. if you personally don't like Maria, suck it up and deal with it. bitching about it won't make it go away. Maria is the real deal and here to stay people, live with it.

Well I hope that people aren't trying to make Maria look bad. Because the media's obsession with Maria has nothing to do with Maria. Maria doesn't egg them on nor does she do anything to warrant any special treatments from the media. And I agree with Clive. I mean, the media is going overboard in trying to make this Serena-Maria thing all huge and stuff. I guess they do kinda have a rivalry, but that's because they've played some amazing matches so far, especially their last two ones. Plus they are the two most marketable tennis players right now. However, I don't like it when the media makes it seem like they don't like each other or that they keep asking them about each other. It's like the whole Justine v. Kim thing and how the media at first tried to make it seem liek they were best friends and then made it seem like they hated each other. Niether's true, they are just simple acquantainces who respect each other's games.

There is a reason for it. And it really pisses me off too, even though I do like Maria.

Mary Jo's husband is an IMG agent. IMG represents Maria.

This is the dirty little secret of tennis broadcasting. The agency affiliations of the announcers influences what they say about players. Cliffie is guilty of this too.

Mary Jo was pretty funny during Maria's double bagle humiliation.

Mary Jo was in rare form today. She is in LURVE with Maria. I just think it's hilarious. I really would like their to be other rivalries besides Maria vs. Serena.

I agree with Cliff. The overkill of this one particular matchup is alot of hype. The WTA would do better if they promoted more diversity, maybe Justine vs Kim or something.

Oh at the beginning of the match, when Maria was down two breaks she was talking about how Maria was such a fighter and she never gave up.

And then she was talking about how even though Maria had all these media commitments, it never detracted from her tennis because she scheduled all of them for just a one week period.

Anyway, I had already seen a lot of the match in person, before I saw the replay on TV after I got home at night, so the whole fighting back thing was funny. I didn't watch the rest of the match because I had seen enough of it already.

I don't remember exactly what Mary Joe said. I don't recall her saying anything funny. THe fact is that she loves both Davenport and Justine, because I believe that her husband represents Davenport too doesn't he? Or I remember some connection between her husband and Lindsay. Hmm...I can't recall what Mary Joe said. She really was all compliment for Lindsay though, saying that when Lindsay's playing the way she does there really wasn't anything Maria could do, which I guess is sorta true to a certain extent. I think that Maria though could have served better or taken control better or fought better, but I don't want to get into that too much.

Ooooh Starr you saw the match in person? What was the crowd's reaction like? Like were people pissed that they didn't get their money's worth? I know that the crowd loves Davenport, so were they just really excited or did they want to see a better match?

Tennis commentating dirty little secret!;) Promoting ING players during commentating! The William sisters left ING after the Indian Wells fiaco!;) I don't think that's the reason they left, I believe it had more to do with money!

The hilarious part about that rivalry discussion was MJ's insistence that Maria was right up there with Serena in terms of popularity. Maria is popular to an extent, but Serena is without a doubt more recognizable to the average person.

I didn't say anything at all about why the Williams sisters left IMG.

I'm just agreeing with you about Mary Jo husband and IMG. The Williams sisters thing was just information. I saw a special last week on the Tennis Channel, it's still in the showing roatation, about tennis players and their agents. That's one of the things they said during the special. It's an hour special, it's very interesting. For those who have the Tennis channel it's a must watch!:D

How dumb of MJF. Does she even live in the US?? The average person in the US doesn't even know who Sharapova is. The average person when asked about tennis will know: The sisters, Roddick, Agassi, Sampras, Capriati, Seles, and MAYBE Hingis.

The hype about Sharapova is not as big as some in the tennis world make it out to be. Sure she is getting more recognized as time goes on, but she is not on the same level in popularity as Serena is in the US. Serena is THE most popular female athlete in the US. She eclipses Mia Hamm, Marion Jones, Michelle Kwan and Sharapova who may be more popular on a world level, but in the US??? No way.

Mary Jo and Pam both did the same thing with Kim after she won the 02 season ending champs over Serena. There is a reason Mary Jo wants Maria to become this hugh superstar. The more money IMG makes, the more Mary Jo's husband makes. The more money Mary Jo's husband makes, the more money Mary Jo gets to spend. Mary Jo doesn't really give two shits about Maria, she's nothing more than a dollar sign to her and a lot of others hyping her up.

I travel a lot for my job. Trust me people who are not tennis fans do not know who the hell maria sharapova is. Sorry but they dont. For the most part.

Which means yes in Russia even non tennis fans know who maria sharapova is.

However not many other places from the random questions i would ask when I talked about tennis to people.

The main person people knew on the womens side.....

Graf
Serena
Chrissy
Monica
Nav
Venus

and then it dwindled.

Of course you have to take into account if I was in a players home country. The answers invariably had home country players at the top of the list even if they had barely cracked the top fifty.

very interesting...do most people still consider Anna K a tennis player? She is highly recognizable. Much more than Sharapova. :wavey: I could not believe Mary Joe when she said Maria will be as popular as Serena after all the commericals she is filming air. MJFis such a dumb bee:mad:

This was the first time since this thread started I actually had a chance to watch a Sharapova match with Fernandez in the booth. I had to turn the sound off. The woman is unlistenable. Or her agent.

Hmmm, a fairly attractive thin white female oogling and fawning over another fairly attractive thin white female tennis player.
or...MJF fawning over a big strong sista who kicked the pretty little girls azz at the AO ?
Poor MJ is scrambling and she should be removed from announcers chair.

MJF isn't white or thin. I think she's attractive(even though her eyebrows are kinda bushy and her makeup looks like somebody from a HairSpray movie applied it for her)

For real. MJF, I have a waxing specialist I can refer you to. I normally like MJ as a commentator, but the fact that her husband is an agent really puts her credibily in question sometimes.

Is she worse than Carillo? I think not.

I can't stand anybody drooling over Sharapova, but Carillo drools and drolls until she's swimming in slimy saliva. At least MJF can commentate.
