Since I saw Monica Seles  for the first time in 1988 in Rolang Garros ( SF against Graf loosing 6/3 3/6 6/3 at the age of 15), I'm completely passionate by girls who are playing double handed backhands and forhands.
If you can help me to make out the list of the girls who are playing with that specific aspect, you would bring me happiness!!!

I start the list:

Marion Bartoli :bounce: :bounce:
Aranxta Parra Satonja
Akiko Morigami :bounce: :bounce:
Lindsay Lee Waters (but I'm not sure)
Irena Pavlovic (junior) :bounce: :bounce:

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

I even mention it in my post just above the pictures. But I thought you might be interested in her anyway. She is a rare bird, hitting only backhands. Maybe we should start a thread on which players use two handed backhands off both sides (thus never hitting forehands). I don't think there are many.

After that we can start a thread on which players hit forehands off both sides (thus never hitting backhands). Only one comes to mind and I think she's retired - Koulikovskaya.

Does she really play both sides double handed shots??

Thank you

I also want to know if s.o has ever seen play Margit Ruutel and Ekaterina Makarova because on itftennis, it's mentionned that they play double handed bakhand. Normally they quote "both sides double handed shots".
And concerning Ekaterina, there's a pics on her biography where she hits a one hand forhand.

Jewel Peterson and Adriana Serra Zanetti are in the main draw of the 25 K$ Augusta challenger in U.S

GOOD LUCK FOR THEM!! :bounce: :bounce:

1rst round:
Jewel Peterson (261) vs Stephanie Dubois (seeded 7-ranked 167)
Adriana Serra Zanetti (227) vs Elisabeth Kobak (WC-862)

Main Draw:

1rst round:
A.Serra Zanetti (227) defeated E.Kobak (WC-862): 6/2 6/2 ;)
A very smart victory for Adriana, but logical too, she faced an unexperienced American girl of 16 y.o who benefits from a WC.

Next round, the serious things are starting:
A.Serra Zanetti (227) vs Chanelle Sheepers (196)
Chanelle seems to play pretty well this week, she ousted the n5 seed ranked 142 Kelly Mc Cain in straight sets 7/5 6/2.
So Adriana may take this match very seriously.

no information concerning Jewel's match against S.Dubois....wait and see

She starts that stroke as a lefty two-handed backhand, and ends it as a righty, choked-up, one-handed, forehand (like Koulikovskaya).

[QUOTE=fredbdx]Main Draw:

ITF 25K$ Augusta Challenger:
1rst round:
Jewel Peterson(261) defeated Stephanie Dubois (7 seed-167):6/4 6/4 :bounce: :bounce:

Great victory for Jewel who seems to play really great tennis against an up coming canadian Girl!!
Now it's time to face Viktoria Azarenka only ranked 463 but a strong opponent! She's only 15 and very talented (she's already 2 QF and 1 SF in 25K$ challengers!)... SO good luck

ITF10K$ Roma Tiro a Volo Challenger:
Ana Floris (499) defeated Lucie Hradecka (seeded 1-209): 7/6 6/4 :fiery:
Big upset for Lucie who was top player in that tournement!

i have another issue with the doublers -
do they get injured more often?
IMO, marion get's injured so much BECAUSE of her double-play. it makes her take the ball with very dangerous swings, and add alot of power to that and she kills herself out there.

Ranked 10 as a college player? What year is she? How old is she? Will she try to go pro?

Yes, she's ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division I tennis as a freshmen. She's probably 18/19 years old. I don't know if she'll turn pro...she currently plays No. 2 singles on the USC team so she's not playing the No. 1 singles player of teams they compete against us. It would probably be wise of her to play ITF events in the summer just to gauge where she is but I think she'll return for a second season.

Thanks for the update and spelling correction. I'll have to go back and correct her name on two of my web sites. Below is a picture of Lindsey's follow through on the right side. She starts that stroke as a lefty two-handed backhand, and ends it as a righty, choked-up, one-handed, forehand (like Koulikovskaya).

Amelia Island:

Qualifying Draw:

1rst round:
R.Dragomir (447) def. A.Nakamura (98): 7/6 6/2 :fiery:
A.Morigami (73) def. A.Muller (WC-375): 7/5 6/3 :)

Main Draw:

1rst round:
S.Peng (49) def. M.Shaughnessy (55): 6/3 2/0 ret. ;)
A.Sugiyama (23) def. M.sanchez Lorenzo (91): 6/1 7/6 (10/8)
M.Domachowska (Q-67) def. A.Morigami (Q-73): 6/3 6/4

Big upset for A.Nakamura in the 1rst round of the qualies after an intense battle in the first set, she seemed to give it up in the 2nd.
Good run for Akiko who qualified but has been stopped by an other qualifer in the 1rst round of the main draw.
A bit of regret for Maria who came back strongly in the 2nd set against Ai to play a very close tie break!
Good news for our ultimate chance in Amelia with the victory of Shuai against Meghann. In the next round she'll face Vera Zvoraneva, if Shuai is able to play smart tennie she's really good chance because Vera's having bad statistics in the last tournement she's played!

A bit surprise to see Aranxta competing in such a weak tournement. Maybe it's because it's in her homeland! and maybe she wants to get confidence winning a couple of matches.
Of course Aranxta is the 1rst seed as ranked n75 in the world!

Main Draw:
1rst round:
A.P.Santonja (1-75) def. S.Errani (455): 2/6 6/3 6/4 :o

Slow start from Aranxta in that tournement, i hope she's going to improve her game next round...or maybe Sara plays incredibly well, having nothing to loose....

Shuai Peng: Shuai had really no chance to face Mary in the 1rst round of Rome considering the amzing shape that Mary recovered. Mary was simply better on every point of the game: strong serve, extremely powerfull shots from both sides...
I saw the match: in the 1rst set, Mary was playing merely her best, all her shots were in, and Shuai couldn't organize herself to stem them. Most of the time Mary overpowered Shuai who had to defend from part to part (hitting one hand forhand defend shots, receiving "return aces" on her 2nd serve and sometimes on her 1rst).
On the 2nd set, Mary started to loose a little bit of concentration, making more unforced errors, shortening her shots...so it helped Shuai to regain confidence, and to play more agressively (hitting winners from both sides).

Aranxta Parra: I'm really worried concerning Aranxta. I thought she had recovered a pretty decent game last week in Rabat loosing only against the winner of the tournement in 3 sets...but once again, she's been loosing this week in the 1rst round against Jamea Jacckson who's not a clay specialist....I really don't know how Aranxta will be in RG, but i'm realy suspicious!

Ayumi Morita:
what a run this week again in a challenger. Last week, she surprised every one but this week she made even better as runner up in Fukuoka at only 15 y.o :) and will be next week n389 in the wold ranking (she was n643 last week and unranked 2 weeks ago!!!!)
I really hope she can continue that way!!:)

No news from this thread since the 14th of may...so I'm going to up date the news of all our players!!

Marion Bartoli:
Marion was off court until Rolang Garros where she played after a couple of weeks without playing. From my point of view, she decided to play in RG because she's french and she didn't want to miss that event...there's no doubt that she wasn't ready to play it and she had to face a really dangerous rookie on the 1st round...Shahar Peer
That's really sad because Marion was seeded for the 1rst time in a GS event as n28:

Her result:
Roland Garros:
Shahar Peer (84) def. Marion Bartoli (33/seeded 28): 6/4 6/3

Shuai Peng:
Pretty good results from Shuai since Roma. She's been playing a QF in Strasbourg upsetting the n2 seed Tatiana Golovin. Then after in RG, she was so close to beat the n1 seed Lindsay Davanport in the 2nd round. I really think that Shuai is talentuous, but she's to work mentally because it's not the 1rst time that she can beat a Top 10 player but she can't conclude her match

Her results:

Strasbourg:
1rst round: S.Peng (43) def. T.Tanasugarn (67) 6/3 6/0 :)
2nd round: S.Peng (43) def. T.Golovin (seeded 2/n20): 6/4 3/6 7/5 :bounce:
QF: M.Domachowka (52) def. S.Peng (43):4/6 7/5 6/2 :fiery:

Rolang Garros:
1rst round: S.Peng (43) def. M.Andrieux (WC-410): 6/0 6/1
2nd round: L.Davenport (seeded 1/n1) def. S.Peng (43): 3/6 7/6 6/0

Akiko Morigami
Smart results for Akiko who played in Istanbul and Roland Garros. In Istanbul she lost to Shahar Peer in 3 sets after defeating the n4 seed Lisa Raymond in the 1rst round, and in RG she made it to the 3rd round upsetting Karolina Sprem the n31 seed loosing in 3 sets against the talentuous and last year RU E.Dementieva

Istanbul:
1rst round: A.Morigami (72) def. L.Raymond (seeded 4/n47): 6/1 6/2 :bounce:
2ns round: S.Peer (84) def. A.Morigami (72): 3/6 6/4 6/2

Roland Garros:
1rst round: A.Morigami (72) def. A.Haynes (105): 7/5 6/4 ;)
2nd round: A.Morigami (72) def. K.Sprem (seeded 31/n28):7/5 6/3
3rd round: E.Dementieva (seeded 4/n5): 6/3 4/6 6/3

Aranxta Parra Satonja
Nothing particular about Aranxta who's to find back confidence, she played an honorable RG making to the 2nd round loosing against the veteran italian top 25 Silvia Farina Elia

Roland Garros:
1rst round: A.Parra Satonja (69) def. S.Perry (102): 3/6 6/3 6/4 :)
2nd round: S.Farina Elia (seeded 18/n25):7/5 6/2

Maria Sanchez Lorenzo
A bit the same as Aranxta, Maria is under her level since a couple of month. I thought she could have gain confidence after her 1rst round win in RG against the 2004 winner A.Myskina (seeded 5/n6) who's completely out of her tennis for personal reasons. Thanks to this victory, she opened her draw but she lost in the 2nd round.

Roland Garros:
1rst round: M.Sanchez Lorenzo (109) def. A.Myskina (seeded 5/n6): 6/4 4/6 6/0 :bounce:
2nd round: E.Gagliardi (105) def. M.Sanchez Lorenzo (109): 6/3 6/3

Marion Bartoli:
A very good tournement for Marion at Eastbourne but with another retirement!!It seems that Marion oftently is getting injured ...that's a real problem for her. What's up with Shiho??? She's been loosing 2 times in a row whereas she was seeded 3! She had played pretty well in the first part of the year...she seems to be down now...she has to regroup and find back confidence!
Very good toourment for Korina who prooved that she deserved her WC. She outsed the n1 seed in the 2nd round, and 2 times she won after being close to loose!

Felixtowe 25 K$ Challenger:
Qualies:
1rst round:
I.Pavlovic (675) def. A.Cooper (WC/unr): 6/1 6/1 :)

2nd round:
S.Mamic (89) def. Z.Yan (231): 6/4 5/7 6/3
A.Smashnova (s5/61) def. A.Parra Satonja (94)

Good tournement for Zi who defeated in the 1rst round a talented seeded player Marta Domashowska and who fought hardly against Sanda Mamic...sad that she lost.
Decent result for Aranxta who beat Pastikova before loosing to the winner of the tournement. But, we are still waiting for better performance...she shouldn't be bagelled in the 2nd set.

FINAL:
JOSIPA BEK (Q/792) def KORINA PERKOVIC (WC/680): 5/7 6/1 6/1

Well, Korina is one of the girls of our thread that's having the best results.
One against, after a QF in a 25K$ challenger, she prooved that she deserved tthis WC. Korina reached the final ousting the 2nd seed Petra Russeger in the 2nd round.
This week, she's up 141 spots in the world ranking due to her quater final in Darmstadt 25 K$ challenger (from n680 to n539). Next week, she'll certainly
move up close to the top 500 with her final in Garching.

FINAL: A.MORIGAMI (72) VS P.SCHNYDER (1rst seed/12)

Well, good tournements for our girls!! excepted Marion's loss in the 1rst round against Mattek...who reached the Semi final ...so may be Marion wasn't playing her A game and Mattek did the tournement of her life!!
Good first match for Aiko with a victory on Abigail and a very strong fight on the 2nd round against 1rst seed Patty Schnyder...Aiko is the only one who took a set to Patty!

Comments:

The leading position changed on august 2005 with Shuai Peng who took the 1rst place to french Marion Bartoli. Shuai played solid tennis all through this year and reached her highest ranking (n31) in august.

Aiko Nakamura is up 2 places and a career highest ranking (n65) in october.

What a second semestre for Zi Yan who is up 6 places over the last 6 months. She was about to break the top 100 but she didn't make it (stopped at her best ranking in october n101!...she was n279 six months ago!).

The revival of Su Wei Hsieh who's up 9 places in 6 months (from 17th to 8th) and 386 spots earned in the world ranking! She's now closed from her highest ranking (n130 in july 2002)

Mari Tanaka: this young japan girl was merely ranked n1000 a year ago..and she's been playing a full year on the itf circuit with many points earned in challengers.

Top players victory:
Nathalie Dechy (13), Paola Suarez (19), Elena Likhovtseva (15)

Comment:
An up and down year for Marion who's finishing the year at pretty the same ranking as last year but she's been dethroned from her 1rst position in the ranking by Shuai Peng.
However, Marion reached this year her best ranking and made her Top 30 debut (n27).
The bad point is that she's been retiring too many times (5 times) but she's also been playing a lot of tournement (27).

Highest ranking player victory: Barbora Srykova (94)

Comments:
Stable progression for Lucie this year who broke the Top 200. She's been competing most of the year on the ITF circuit with quite good success (2 titles), and tried a couple of time to qualify on the WTA circuit...without success right now! We'll see next year how she can do and continue to rise in the ranking.
In double, her results have been incredible...from unranked to n85 at the end of the year with a semi final in Prague Tier IV event and 9 titles on the ITF circuit (two $75K in Zagreb and Denain, two $50K in Biella and St Raphael, three $25K in Civitavecchia, Prague and Prerov and two $10K in Biberach and Rogaska Slanita)

Gold Coast Tier III $175K

Qualies:

1rst round:
Zi Yan (s7/n99) def. Vania King (n166):6/4 6/2
2nd round:
Zi Yan (s7/n104) def. Shikha Uberoi (n153):4/6 6/4 6/4
Final round:
Angela Haynes (n146) def. Zi Yan (s7/n104):6/4 3/6 6/2

Good victory for Zi over Vania who is one of the american teenage up coming talent. Sadly she's to play the under rated Angela Haynes (former n95 five months ago)...strong fight but not enough.
Will she be lucky as 1rst in the Lucky Looser list?

Main Draw:

1rst round:
Aiko Nakamura (n66) def. Antonella Serra Zanetti (n64):2/6 6/4 6/3

She'll next play spanish talentuous Anabel Medina Garrigues (s8/n32)

Aukland Tier IV $145K

Qualies:

1rst round:
Su Wei Hsieh (n138) def. Sacha Jones (WC/n776):7/5 6/1
2nd round:
Mervana Jugic Salkic (n156) def. Su Wei Hsieh (n138):6/4 6/4

New season and new status for Su Wei who's now competing on the WTA Tour after a merely all season played on the ITF circuit to rise in the world ranking.
Pretty sad result for Su Wei who logically beat a local WC in the 1rst round after falling to experimented Mervana in 2 sets.

Main Draw:
1rst round:
Akiko Morigami (n49) vs Elena Likhovtseva (s3/n18)
Marion Bartoli (s6/n33) vs Emilie Loit (n73)

Well it's not an easy draw for both of them.
1rst, Akiko will have to play her best against the 3 seed of the tournement. And Marion will have to take care of her left handed opponent (former n27 in april 2004) who has a dangerous topspin forhand and a slice backhand wich could disturb Marion. However, she's the 6th seed of the draw and she should win that match.
Good test for both girl!...good luck

Gold Coast Tier III $175K

2nd round result:
Anabel Medina Garrigues (s8/n32) def. Aiko Nakamura (n66):6/4 6/4

Good fight from Aiko against her strong opponent of the day...logical loss.

Auckland Tier II $145K

1rst round:
Marion Bartoli (s6/n33) def. Emilie Loit (n73):6/7 6/3 6/1
Maria Sanchez Lorenzo (n96) def. Shinobu Asagoe (s7/n35):6/0 3/6 6/2
Elena Likhovtseva (s3/n18) def. Akiko Morigami (n49):7/5 5/7 7/5

Gloabaly a good day in Auckland...even if we can regret that Akiko didn't create the biggest upset of the day...However, she played a really strong match against a Top 20 player so she's on the good way to start 2006.
Logical victory for Marion even if she had to play 3 sets to beat Emilie (as expected considering Emilie's talent).
At least a very good news from Maria Sanchez Lorenzo...who ousted the japanese 7 seed Shinobu Asagoe....Maria seems to start 2006 better than in 2005..!

Match to be played today:
Maria Sanchez Lorenzo (n96) vs Kristina Brandi (n85)
Marion Bartoli (s6/n33) vs Laura Granville (n62)

Well, pretty interesting matches to be played...with pretty good chance to win...good luck

Auckland Tier III $145K

2nd round:

Kristina Brandi (n85) def. Maria Sanchez Lorenzo (n96): 6/4 6/1
Marion Bartoli (s6/n33) def. Laura Ganville (n62):3/6 6/2 6/2

Desapointing result for Maria who could have done better against veteran Brandi...with a severe 2 sets loss (especially in the 2nd set). After her good 1rst round perf against the 7th seed, we were expecting better from her.

For the 2nd time Marion has been pushed to 3 sets against talented former n28 Granville. After loosing the 1rst set (like against E.Loit), she adjusted her game to win easely.
She's pretty good chance to make it to the semi final (just like last year) because she'll face quite unknown but dangerous big hitting baseliner Julia Schruff (n95). That german girl created the surprise of the day ousting 3rd seed/n18 Elena Likhovtseva. Good luck for her!
That match is really important for Marion because if she win it, she'll secure a seeded status in the Australian Open!

Auckland Tier IV $145K

Quater Final:
Marion Bartoli (s6/n33) def. Julia Schruff (n95):6/2 6/0 :worship:

Well I was expected a tougher match for Marion who simply lost 2 games. That overwhelming victory for Marion is positive for her confidence. She played a strong match (very good serve) and more than 15 winners and very few UE. She pushed Julia to play over her level with pressuring returns of serve and solid game.
After her match, Marion said that she was very happy to play here and that she always enjoy to play in Auckland and that she wantes to do better than last year (semi finalist).
For that, she'll have to make a huge performance competing against 1rst seed/n7 Nadia Petrova who's been dropping only 10 games since the beginning of the tournement. .
Good luck for her.

However, Marion did the right choice to play in Auckland and even $75K Dubai challenger (that she won)...it gave her confidence ....and also enough points to be seeded in the Australian Open.

Marion created the biggest upset of the day by beating the favorite of the tournement. She produced once again her best agressive tennis to take the first set...Nadia came back in the 2nd before retiring at the beginning of the 3rd. For sure Marion would have prefered to win properly that match. However, she played great tennis today and will compete for the 1rst time against dangerous former Top 10 russian Vera Zvonareva. Vera is lower ranked than Marion these days but she's for sure under rated after a very poor 2005 season. She only dropped one set during that week and preformed a solid game to beat the 2nd seed/n17 Daniela Hantuchova.
Marion will have nothing to lose...good luck.

First qualifying results of next week WTA Tournement.

Sydney Tier II $600K qualies:
1rst round:
Tian Tian Sun (n109) def. Akiko Morigami (s3/n49):2/6 6/1 6/3 :o
Zi Yan (s8/n99) def. Eva Birnerova (n113):6/1 6/1

Big upset for Akiko who loses in the early round despite her 3rd seed status. She lost against Tian Tian Sun...remember Tian tian beat Serena Williams last year and is a solid player mostly reknown to have won the gold medal in the Olympics in double.
No problem for Zi Yan who dominated Eva Birnerova in 2 easy set.

Camberra Tier IV $145K qualies:
1rst round:
Eva Hrdinova (n232) def. Olivia Lukaszewicz (WC/n539):6/4 6/0
Olivia benefited from a WC in Camberra and playes a solid 1rst set. After that Eva grew in confidence adjusting her shots to play harder and bagelled Olivia. Hiwever, it's always a good experience for young up coming girls to play WTA tour matches.

Hobart Ter IV $145K qualies:
1rst round:
Aranxta Parra Satonja (s1/n108) def. Zsofia Gubasci (n222):7/6 6/1
Well aranxta was one place to be directely accepted in the main draw...so she's the 1rst seed of the qualies. It could be a good opportunity to play some matches and find confidance...that she has lost in 2005.
For her 1rst match she was opposed to Zsofia Gubasci who stronglt batled in the 1rst set...after that Aranxta found the good rythm to overpower Zsofia.

Auckland Tier IV $145K

FINAL: MARION BARTOLI (s6/n33) def. VERA ZVONAREVA (s8/n36) 6/2 6/2

Incredible week for Marion who took her 1rst title on the WTA Tour. Auckalnd is definitively one of her favourite tournement with amazong record: 2 times semi finalist (2004, 2005) and victory this year.
Despite a lower ranking, Vera was the favourite in that final as former Top 10 player, domintating head to head against Marion and impressive week in Auckland.
However, a report said that Marion was just playing on fire especially in the high level of play in the 1rst set: both players were hitting winners after winners...Marion dismissed nearly anything in that set and succeed to break 2 times (the score didn't reflect the games which were very closed). In the 2nd set, Marion kept playing her best and easy lead 5-1 and then 6/2.
After the match point, Marion just took her head in her hands...she couldn't realize that she has won. During the ceremony, she also cheered her father to support her as a coach..and Walter Bartoli even cried, joiging her on the court for a photo shoot.
At 21 years old and 3 months, Marion won her 1rst title on the WTA Tour. Her former best results on the WTA circuit was 6 semi-finals.
That's a great achievement for that courageous and talented girl who started to play tennis because she was fan from Monica seles.

Sydney Tier II $600K qualies:

2nd round:
Zi Yan (s8/n99) def. Denisa Chladkova (n151):6/4 6/4

Solid win from Zi against that former n31 in the world...Zi kept on playing well after her rise in the world ranking in 2005...she's now to win one more match to be qualified in that Tier II event! Her next opponent is Anastasiya Yakimova (n116)

Hobart Tier IV $145K qualies:

2nd round:
Aranxta Parra Satonja (s1/n106) def. Andrea Vanc (WC/n836):6/3 6/3

Aranxta continues her run as best seeded in that qualifying draw ousting veteran Andrea Vanc...she'll have a strong test in her next match against rising canadian talent Aleksandra Wozniak (n169).

Sydney
Main Draw:
1rst round: Shuai Peng (n41) vs Ana Ivanovic (n19)

Hobart
Main Draw:
1rst round: Maria Sanchez Lorenzo (n96) vs Iveta Benesova (s5/n50)

Camberra
Main Draw:
1rst round:
Aiko Nalamura (n66) vs Virginie Razzano (n59)
Marion Bartoli (s2/n33) vs Viktoriya Kutusova (n78)

Shuai Peng is back on her revealing last year tournement (reaching the semi final in 2005). Of course, it's going to be really tough for her to reeditate the same performance considering the high level of the competitors. Her 1rst match against teenage Top 20 Ana Ivanovic is going to be a real test.

Maria Sanchez Lorenzo could create a good surprise...for the 2nd time in a row she's facing the 7th seed of the draw. Last week, she upsetted Shinobu Asagoe (7th seed/n35)...this week the 7th seed is lower ranked but dangerous Iveta Benesova.

In Canberra, all the players will fear Auckland's last week winner Marion Bartoli who is the 2nd seed of the draw. We hope that Marion could physically recover from her 5 matches played and she'll have a strong test in the 1rst round against rising teenage Viktoriya Kutusova. If she's ok, she could meet in semi final the other "crowned" girl ok last week Lucie Safarova (surprising unseeded winner in Gold Coast who performed victory over skilled player such as Ai Sugyama, Patty Schnyder, Dinara Safina and Flavia Pennetta :o :o ).
Aiko Nakamura will have also a strong test against hard hitter french Virginie Razzano.

Sydney Tier II $600K

Qualies final round:
Zi Yan (s8/n99) def. Anastasia Yakimova (n116): 6/1 6/3

No problem for Zi who qualified for the main draw...A good performance considering the high level of the players.
In the 1rst round of the Main Draw, she'll play rising russian teen Anna Chakvetadze (n37)...so good lucjk for Zi who has nothing to loose...

Sydney Main Draw 1rst round result:
1rst round: Ana Ivanovic (n19) def. Shuai Peng (n41):6/2 6/4

Early but logical exit for Shuai who was playing one of the most talented revelation of 2005. The 2nd set was pretty close and Shuai could have put more pressure on Ana.
Shuai was maybe a little bit nervous to be back in Syndey with all the points she had to defend (she was semi finalist in 2005). The sad consequence in that she'll be out of the Top 50 next week.

HOBART Tier IV $145K

Qualies Final Round:
Aranxta Parra Satonja(s1/n108) def. Aleksandra Wozniak(n169):6/3 3/6 7/5

Despite her 1rst seed status, it's a really good test for Aranxta today who play one of the girl to follow in 2006. Maybe the experience made the difference in the last set. It's great to see Aranxta competing with pleasure.
In the Main Draw, she will play Kristina Brandi (n85)...interesting test for her...Aranxta's the game to win it.

1rst round Main Draw result:
Iveta Benesova (s7/n50) def. Maria Sanchez Lorenzo (n96):6/3 2/6 6/4
A little bit of regret in that match..Maria was closed to oust the 7th seed of the draw..well the good point is that last week she beat a Top 40 player, this week she did really well against the 50th player...so that mean that she's under rated..and it should give her confidence for the next tournements.

CAMBERRA TIER IV $145K

1rst news..Marion Bartoli who was supposed to be the 2nd seed of the tournement withdrew. That's pretty logical after her 1rst title last week. she said that she wanted to take a rest this week to be ready for the AO were she's supposed to be the 27th seed.

That withdraw is interesting for Aiko Nakamura who was about to play dangerous french Virginie Razzano...who replaced Marion as 9seed.
Aiko will play a qualifer ...Eva Hrdinova (n232)

The ITF circuit is also starting this week in Florida La Tampa $25K challenger:

Girls in competition:
In the qualies Chrissie Seredni (n611) faced the 1rst seed n273 Chi Wei Chan. Natsumi Hamamura (n484) will place unranked WC Brittany Augustine.
Cory Ann Avants (n280) is directly accepted in the Main Draw

HOBART Tier IV $145K

2nd round:
Francesca Schiavone (s7/n15) def. Zi Yan (s8/n99):3/6 7/6 6/1

what a fight from Zi against italian solid top 15 ... she was so close to beat her and was even leading in the Tie Break...after the tie break's loss, Zi couldn't continue to play the same level...she was reailly tired in her 5th match in Sydney

[COLOR=Red]CAMBERRA TIER IV $145K

Aiko Nakamura (n66) def. Roberta Vinci (s5/n51):7/5 6/0

Aiko is playing great this week in Camberra! she ousted the 5th seed of the draw...and even bagelled her in the 2nd set!! :bounce:

Well, goor start from Aiko who took the lead...After that, Shahar started to play harder and Aiko shortened a little bit her shots... The 3rd set was completely overpowered by Shahar. Hoowever, this is a good tournement for Aiko with a Top 50 player victory (Roberta Vinci).

La Tampa challenger $25K

Well, nothing really exciting this week in La Tampa, woth 2 qualifers who lost against better oponent...but also with no real fight.
In the Main Draw, Cory Ann was unlucky to meet an up coming talent ...But the score is too severe..

Stuttgart Challenger $10K

Well, very good night for our players with the last 2 girls qualified for the final round!
1rst, applause to Shiho who ousted the 8th seed of the draw!! Shiho seems to play very srtong tennis in Australia after a very poor end of season in 2005. That's great to see her play good tennis. In the final round, she'll face Ting Li (n197) who beat Liliah Osterloh (s21/n139).
In the 2nd match, Su Wei pay have played really smart game to overpower that young rising talent of 16 y.o who was one of the best junior in the world!
Her next match will be very serious against skilled and former Top 20 Tamarine Tanasugarn...good luck for her

Main Draw:

1rst round
Aranxta Parra Satonja (n107) vs Tatiana Panova (n116)
Akiko Morigami (n45) vs Hana Sromova (n92)
Shuai Peng (n42) vs qualifer
Aiko Nakamura (n62) vs Alize Cornet (WC/n330)
Zi Yan (n101) vs Nathalie Dechy (s11/n11)
Maria Sanchez Lorenzo (n94) vs Lucie Safarova (n35)
Marion Bartoli (s27/n27) vs Amy Frazier (n52)

Most of the girls have pretty good match to play in the 1rst round excepted Zi Yan who is facing the 11th seed and last year semi finalist Nathalie Dechy.
It's going to be a tough job also for Maria who's meeting the highest unseeded ranked player and recent winner in Gold Coast!
Marion will have to pay attention in her 1rst match against dangerous american veteran Amy Frazier!

Stuttgart Challenger $10K

Main Draw 2nd round:

Tamarine Tanasugarn (s11/n128) def.Su Wei Hsieh (s20/n138):6/1 6/2

Sadly, none of the girls were able to qualify for the Main Draw. According to different reports, they didn't play as well as they did in the second round.
Shiho played as much winners as Ting, but she also made twice more unforced errors.
Concerning Shuai, she played more agressively than Tamarine but with too much unforced errors too. However, and especially for Shiho, it was pretty good result to reach the final round. Shuai had a logical loss against a undre rated experiment player.

Main Draw 1rst round:
Aranxta Parra Satonja (n107) def. Tatiana Panova (n116): 4/6 7/5 6/1
Hana Sromova (n92) def. Akiko Morigami (n45): 3/0 ret.
Ashley Harkleroad (Q/n109) def. Shuai Peng (n42):6/4 6/1

Well pretty bad day...with only a victory over the 3 girls on court.
Fist unlucky Akiko who had to retire for an akle sprain.
Big surprise with Shuai loosing to Ashley Harkleroad who is realizing a good come back on the tour. Ashley just played intelligent and smart tennis to win tha match. Shuai has definivelt bigger weapons than Ashley but that wasn't her day. In the 1rst set, Shuai missed an easy shot who could have make her leanding 5-3 and after that, she only won 1 game. Shuai isn't feeling well right now...hope she'll recover her last year level soon.
Good result for Aranxta who had to fight against battling Tatiana Panova. She was close to loose but kept hanging there to win the 3rd set very easely.
In her next match she'll face the 14th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.

ITF CIRCUIT:

AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Main Draw 1rst round:
Aiko Nakamura (n62) def. Alize Cornet (WC/n330):6/2 4/6 6/2
Zi Yan (n101) def. Nathalie Dechy (s11/n11):6/7 6/2 6/3 :bounce:
Maria Sanchez Lorenzo (n94) def. Lucie Safarova (n35):6/4 6/3 :bounce:
Marion Bartoli (s27/n27) def. Amy Frazier (n47):6/3 6/2

With a lot of supporters cheering her, Aiko battled 3 sets against french 15 y.o sensation Alize Cornet. Aiko was much more powerfull than Alizee hitting great shots especially on her backhand. In the 2nd set, Aiko started to play more unforced errors and Alize was running on every point winning that set. After that, Aiko regrouped and dominated Alize with her flat shots.

Who will stop Zi in her progression...! Considered as a double specialist since last year, she's now believe on her single chance of success and she ousted the 11th seed of the draw and last year semi fianlist Nathalie Dechy. Ok, Nathalie wasn(t playing her best today, but Zi kept concentrating to take the 2 final sets.

Good surprise too from Maria Sanchez Lorenso who ousted the higher unseeded player...Lucie Safarova who won the 1rst tournement of the year in Gold Coast. Lucie made too unforced errors despite numerous winners, but Maria played really smart tennis with only 15 UE!

Marion had a tricky 1rst match against ever dangerous veteran Amy Frazier. Marion seemed to take that match very seriously and won it in 2 easy sets.

2nd round preview:
Aranxta Parra Satonja (n107) vs Svetlana Kuznetsova (s14/n14)

Maria Sanchez Lorenzo (n94) def. Anna Lena Groenefeld (s22/n22): 4/6 6/4 6/1 :bounce:
Roberta Vinci (n48) def. Marion Bartoli (s27/n27): 6/4 3/6 6/3

Well half of the girls won las night...and frankly th ewon who won were the less expected:
Aiko Nakamura completely dominated Gisela Dulko in 52 minutes...Aiko played really smart tennis against Gisela who never found the rythm. For the 1rst time, Aiko is qualified for a 3rd round...next step 7th seed/n7 Patty Schnyder...nothing to loose.
I was expected a win from Zi over Sybille, even if Sybille is playing great since a couple of months (breaking top 100). With 53 UE, she wasn't able to handle that match even if she made twice more winners than Sybille. Zi made have missed her chance in the second set who was really closed (65 minutes!).
What a good surprise from Maria Sanchez Lorenzo who ousted the 22 seed. Maria played with a lot of agressivity hitting more winners than Anna Lena who is reknown to play hardly. Maria played less unforced errors and made the point to the net at 73% (11 over 15). That is for sure a great match for Maria.
Last match and another desillusioned even if it was a really tough test for Marion because Roberta has been rising on the WTA Tour for 1 year. All the more, Roberta is definitevely playing a type of game to disturb a double handed player: lot of slice on her backhands, not a power hitter games, and net type of game. That was for sure a tough battle (only 2more points won by Roberta in the entire match -83 vs 81- and nearly 2 hours of game).

ITF Circuit:

Fort Walton Beach $25K Challenger:

Main Draw 1rst round

Lioudmila Skavronskaia (s1/n180) def. Cory Ann Avants (n278): 6/4 6/0

Well very slow start from Cory Ann in 2006 with 2 loss in the 1rst round of the challengers she played. Ok she has been pretty unlucky too with the toss: Shvedova, an upcoming player last week and the 1rst seed of the draw this week. However, it's hard to accept that she has been bagelled in the 2nd set! I hope she'll find the determination to train and play better.

Patty Schnyder (s7/n7) def. Aiko Nakamura (n62): 6/2 6/3
Francesca Schiavone (s12/n12) def. Maria Sanchez Lorenzo (n94): 6/0 6/0

Well our last hopes are logically out.
Aiko lost to left hander Patty Schnyder with an horable score. Of course Patty had mixed the ball with a lot of top spin and also played a lot of cross court shots...that really disturbed two handed player. However, this is a really positive tournement for Aiko who will be close to the Top 50 at the next ranking.
42 minutes on the court and only 18 points won by Maria Sanchez Lorenzo! That's Francesca's law who has been playing estonishing tennis since a couple of months (she's geting closer to the Top 10 now!). Maria didn't enter the match. But Maria can be proud of her tournement reaching the 3rd round (the last time she did it was in the US Open 2003).

FINAL: VIRGINIE PICHET (s1/n269) DEF IRENA PAVLOVIC (n584):6/4 6/1

Well, 1rst final for Irena on the ITF tour with strong victories over 6th and 3rd seed before loosing to the 1rst seed Virginie Pichet. Strong result from that 17 y.o girl that could give her confidence for the next tournements.

This Week:

Hull $10K

Chrissie Seredni (s2/n610) def. Nicola Mooney (n1340): 6/2 6/0
Final round:
Julia Bone (s13/n1191) def. Chrissie Seredni (s2/n610): 6/3 6/2

Main Draw:

1rst round:
Irena Pavlovic (n584) def. Davinia Lobbinger (n686): 6/3 6/3
Chrissie Seredni (LL/n610) def. Rachael Dillon (WC/n746): 7/6 6/1

Quater Final:
Irena Pavlovic (n584) def. Katie O'Brien (s1/n255): 6/3 6/4 :bounce:

A couple of match won by Chrissie which is a good news even if she couldn't find any solution against the 3rd seed Karen Peterson.
Irena Pavlovic continues to play on fire after her last week final in Tipton, she's now qualified for the semis upsetting in 2 sets the 1rst seed/n255 Katie O'Brien (highest ranked player victory!). In Semi, she'll face dangerous qualifer Pila Suomalainen... Good luck for her!

Grenoble $10K:

Main Draw:

1rst round:
Korina Perkovic (n538) def. Alice Bellica (WC/n1234): 6/3 4/6 6/4

2nd round:
Korina Perkovic (n538) def. Giulia Gatto Monticone (Q/n803): 6/4 6/3

Quater Final:
Korina Perkovic (n538) def. Elodie Caillat (Q/unr): 7/5 6/3

Good results for Korina who is qualified for the Semis in that tournement...with no strong opposition (a lot of seeded ousted). Now she'll face a strong french opponent , 2nd seed/n266 Virginie Pichet who won Hull last week.

I found this interesting article about japanese girls on tour playing double-handed strokes:

Double-handed Japanese learn not to make a fist of ithttp://www.indianexpress.com/grfx/trans.gifhttp://www.indianexpress.com/grfx/trans.gifSHIVANI NAIK (http://www.indianexpress.com/about/feedback.html?url=http://www.indianexpress.com/full_story.php?content_id=87841&title=Double-handed%20Japanese%20learn%20not%20to%20make%20a%20 fist%20of%20it)

http://www.indianexpress.com/grfx/trans.gif

BANGALORE, FEBRUARY 13: You thought Japanese ingenuity was restricted to sleek automobiles and gadgetry? Its seeped on to the tennis court as well, with a pack of Japanese women opting to play two-handed on both flanks, adding that extra bit of power and pace that their small frames otherwise limit.

There are about 30 women gripping the racket with two fists and punching on both sides on the Tour, and the tribe is only increasing. A decade after Monica Seles showed how it could be done with visible success and an audible grunt, this double-hand-double has found its following, none more faithful than the Japanese.
A third of those 30 have followed Rika Hiraki and Akiko Morigami knocking on the top-50s regularly from Japan and the nation now has a clutch of five players in the top-100. Aiko Nakamura and Shiho Hisamatsu, currently playing here at the Bangalore Open, adhere to the typically constant two-hand grip, and have found more company in Taipeis Su Wei Hseih, another upcoming player who wants to make up for the lack of muscle.

Most of us start two-handed because the racket is too heavy and we dont have the power to match the big girls, says Shiho Hisamatsu (26), who alters her top-bottom grip several times in a single rally. I managed to hit very hard and generate power to return the heavy balls, so I continued after a Canadian coach advised me to work further on it.

Those like Nakamura (22), currently No 68 in the world, dont switch the grip playing on either flank but position themselves suitably to counter the opponent from the baseline. Running away with a 6-love first-set win, fifth-seed Nakamura lost her momentum to go down in three sets to Mariya Koryttseva, and coach Eiji Takeuchi reckons that the ploy can at times restricts movement. It gets tough when opponents target the body, and players who change grips have to decide fast. Also the reach is short, but it is worth the effort since the Japanese move fast on court. It can tire you out some days, but it works most of the times, he says. Take Sato, who coached Akiko Morigami when she broke into the top-50s, reiterates that the Japanese prefer two-handed on both sides because they found it tough to match the big-hitting ones in power. Asians have traditionally been small-built, we have no choice, but to improvise, he says.

That's a great article, and completely in accordance with my thread, here's some updated results of all of the double handed players:

Marion BARTOLI:

After the Australian Open, Marion decided to play Tokyo Tier I where she beat her compatriot Tatiana Golovin (n24) before falling to veteran 7th seed/n18 Elena Likhovtseva. Then she came back to France to play the Open Gaz de France in Paris where she faced a strong Nathalie Dechy (n21).
During that period, Marion reached her best ranking n26.

Aiko NAKAMURA:
Since her good result in the AO (3rd round), Aiko is seaching good sensations...she lost in Tokyo against revival Sam Stosur (n98 in Tokyo, she's ranked n51 this week!), she reached the 2nd round in Pattaya falling to Lourdes Dominguez Lino (n65) and was completely out of her subject in Bangolore Tier IV loosing to Mariya Korrytseva (n125) after leading 6/0!
She also reached her best ranking so far at n54.

Maria SANCHEZ LORENZO:
She was another good surprise in Australia reaching the 3rd round. After that, she flew to Pattaya where she reached the 2nd round loosing to 4th seed/n43 and very talentuous Shahar Peer after a good battle (7/6 6/3)

Zi YAN:
After her emotional crown in the Australian Open double competition, Zi played in Pattaya where she lost in the 1rst round against Emma Laine (n76)
Zi also reached her best ranking at n77.

Aranxta PARRA SATONJA:
Aranxta was back to competition this week in Belgium whith an early exit against french Stephanie Cohen Aloro (n139).

Su Wei HSIEH:
After a year plaing on the challenger tour to rise back in the top ranking, she can play on the WTA tour. In Tokyo, she lost i the 1rst round of the qualies against former Top 80 player Miho Saeki after a strong 3 sets battle.
Better results in Pattaya where she beat Saori Obata 2nd seed/n107 in the qualies but fall to qualify in the 3rd roung against 8th seed/n124 Katherina Bondarenko.
In Bangalore this week, Su Wei entered the main draw directly but lost to Tzipora Obziler (n131).
Su Wei reached her best ranking on the 30th of january at n126.

Shiho HISAMATSU:
Shiho has been playing realy good tennis since the beginning of the year. In Tokyo, she reached the fianl round of the qualies upsetting 1rst seed/n42 Iveta Benesova!!before loosing to 7th seed/n101 Saori Obata.
In Pattaya she lost in the 1rst round of the qualies against 8th seed/n124 Katerina Bondarenko.
In Pattaya she logically run to the final round of the qualies (as 5th seed) but lost to skilled veteran 1rst seed/n139 Tatiana Poutchek.
With all the good results, Shiho reached her best ranking at the beginning of february:n162

News about Lucie Hradecka, Cory Ann Avants, Mari Tanaka, Francesca Lubiani, Irena Pavlovic, Natsumi Hamamura...

Lucie HRADECKA:
After the Australian Open, Lucie came back to Europe to play on the ITF circuit. 1rst step was Italy with a strong Ortisei $75K where she sadly lost to french young power hitter Aravane Rezai (n187) in the Final round of the qualies. Big battle from both girls who went to the 3rd set (4/6 6/1 6/4).
She staid in Italy to play a weaker event: Capriolo $25K...and won her 10th ITF tournement and of course the 1rst of the year. Lucie kept her seeded status whereas a lot of them fall in the early rounds. As 5th seed, Lucie captured the title without facing any seeded player!
At the end of january, Lucie reached her best ranking at n173. But she will officially break her record on monday with a ranking aroung n155!

Cory Ann AVANTS:
Well, I have been confused about Cory Ann results since the beginning of the year. I'm surprised because I thought she was a Top 200 potential player but the results are not coming.
In 5 tournements, she lost 4 times in the 1rst round. Ok, most of the times, she faced higher ranking players or up coming talents. However, if she wants to rise in the world rankin, she'll have to beat stronger players!! The only acceptable result was in Midland $75K where she reached the final round of the qualies falling to Yaroslava Shvedova (n269)

Mari TANAKA:
Mari played her 1rst tournement this year in New Zealand. In Wellington $10K challenger, Mari was the 1rst seed but fall in semi final against young czech Katerina Krampova.
This week, she played $25K Sydney challenger where she reached the 2nd round with a good 1rst round victory over Kim (n318) before loosing to 5th seed/n257) in 3 sets.

Francesca LUBIANI:
The italian veteran continues to play on the tour. She started in New Zealand Taupo $10K challenger. As 1rst seed, she reached the semi final falling to another double handed player Natsumi Hamamura (n487). After that, she lost to prominsing player consecutively: 15 yo english Jade Curtis (n976) in the 2nd round of $10K Wellington and 17 yo from New Zealand in $25K Sydney.

Irena PAVLOVIC:
Big program for that young french talent of 17 yo...with very good good results. May be she is inspired by Marcos Baghdatis who is training in the same academy as Irena. First she played 2 $10K challenger in Great Britain...and she finished Runner up of this 2 events! In Tipton, she ousted 1rst seed/n255 Katie O'Brien before falling to n398 Melanie South for the title. In Hull, she created the biggest upset of the 1rst round beating 2nd seed/n279 Sarah Borwell, but also 3rd seed/n387 Rebecca LLewellyn before loosing to compatriot 1rst seed/n266 Virginie Pichet.
The week after those 2 excellent results, she came back to France to play Belfort $25K. The organisator allows a WC to Irena where she scored her biggest victory against n212 before loosing to eventual champion n177 Christina Barrois.
Irena was in Paris Open Gaz de France Tier II WTA event for the qualies. She was close to beat her academy partner n213 Pauline Parmentier!
Of Course, with all the results, Irena broke her ranking record last week: n453...she's been up 115 spots since the 2005 year ending ranking.

Natsumi HAMAURA:
Natsumi had a good start for her 1rst 2006 tournement reaching the final in Taupo $10K beating 1rst seed Francesca Lubiani before loosing to 4th seed/n428 Leanne Baker.
The week after, she lost to 16 yo Kairangi Vano from New Zealand in Taupo.
In Sydney, she succeeded to qualify before loosing to 7th seed/n292 Sophie Ferguson from Australia.

Marion BARTOLI:

Ranking Evolution: -4 (from n29 to n33)
Pretty desapointing fortnight with 2 tournements played and only 1 victory. She lost in the early round in Dubai (vs n48 Dushevina) and 2nd round in Doha (loosing to n2 Amelie Mauresmo). Last year she reached the 2nd round in Dubai as a qualifer and the QF in Doha...so she lost a couple of points finishing outside the Top 30.

Shuai PENG:

Ranking Evolution: +1 (from n61 to n60)
Shuai Peng is facing authority and politics problems with the Chinese Governement. After her loss in the National Championships, the Chinese tennis organisation decided that Shuai didn't deserve a personal training team. Shuai decided that she should give up with the national organisation. But the chinese authority didn't agree and started to put pressure under Shuai not giving her visa to play in the Emirates, considering that she has been benefiting from free coaching for many years and that she should be devoted for them now.
However good news, Shuai is back to competition this week in the Unites States.

Maria SANCHEZ LORENZO:
Ranking evolution: +13 (from n74 to n61) :bounce:
Very good stats for Maria Sanchez Lorenzo who's up 13 spots in the world ranking and 3 in the "two handed both sides player" ranking. In februay, she reached 1rst tour singles semi final in nearly 2 years in Bogota Tier III $175K ousting 3rd seed/n39 Catalina Castano before loosing to Top seed/n18 Flavia Pennetta. Sadly the week after, she fall against Laura Pous Tio at Acapulco.

Akiko MORIGAMI:
Ranking Evolution: -7 (from n57 to n64)
Akiko was off court due to her injury contracted in the Australian Open. She'll be back at Indian Wells like Shuai Peng.

Aiko NAKAMURA:
Ranking Evolution: -2 (from n64 to n66)
Aiko didn't play in the Emirates, her last tournement was in Bangalore with an early upset against Mariya Koryttseva (n125). Aiko will be back to competition in Indian Wells.

Zi YAN:
Ranking Evolution: +1 (from n75 to n74) -reached her best ranking n72 last week-Nothing really exciting for Zi who competed in the Emirates: in Dubai, she reached the qualies final round falling to veteran Henryeta Nagyova (n146) and in Doha, she lost in the early round aainst compatriot n209 Ting Li :o . After a really convincing australian tour, Zi seems to struggle a little bit to find her confidence back.

Aranxta PARRA SATONJA:
Ranking Evolution: -9 (from n96 to n105)
After a short coming back in he Top 100, Aranxta is back to her confidence trouble loosing in the 1rst round of all the tournements she played iduring the 2 last week: Stephanie cohen Aloro (n139) in Antwerp, Bethanie Mattek (n125) in Bogota and Carla Tiene (Q/n377) in Acapulco :o :o...all of them lower ranked than Aranxta.

Su Wei HSIEH:
Ranking Evolution: -4 (from n126 to n130- n126 highest ranking)
During that period, Su Wei played Bangalore Tier III $175K loosing to Tsipora Obziler (n142).

Lucie HRADECKA:Ranking Evolution: 0 (n154)
Lucie keeps her best ranking playing in Biberach $25K challenger reaching the Quater final with a surprising loss against qualifer n268 Renata Voracova.

Shiho HISAMATSU:
Ranking Evolution: -5 (from n165 to n170)
Shiho's trying this year to play more wta events. Due to her ranking, she has to play the qualies. In Bangalore, she reached the fianl round of the qualies loosing to Top seed/n141 Tatiana Poutchek. In Doha, she lost in the 1rst round vs veteran 7th seed/n144 Anne Kremer.

Of course, it's difficult for girls who are between n100 and n200 to choose the best strategy: playing ITF Event to secure their world rankings or trying to qualify in WTA Event and learning to play against stronger player.

fredbdx
Mar 13th, 2006, 07:30 AM
Cory Ann AVANTS:

Ranking Evolution: -5 (from n276 to n281)
Cory Ann only plays qualies at Memphis Tier III $175K as WC and lost against Brenda Schultz Mc Carthy (unr/WC) who is trying to come back on the tour. That's very disapointed. We're still waiting for Cory Ann to level up in her game

Morita AYUMI:

Ranking Evolution: +31 (from n332 to n301)
Morita is one of the biggest new generation's biggest hope. She just celebrated her 17 years old bithday a couple of days ago and she's about to enter the Top 300.
She's competing on the australian challenger tour and reached the semi final in Sydney $25K beating 8th seed/n308 Cindy Watson before loosing to 7th seed/n292 Sophie Ferguson. The week after, at Gosford $25K, she fall to 8th seed/n322 Ye-Ra Lee in the 1rst round.

Adriana SERRA ZANETTI
Ranking Evolution: -9 (from n325 to n334)
Adriana is still injured, she hasn't been playing since the US Open 2005. She's expecting to recover soon and coming back on the tour

Mari TANAKA
Ranking Evolution: +18 (from n386 to n372)-new ranking record n370 (february 27, 2006)
Like many asian players, Mari played in New Zealand and Australia. She reached the Semi final in Wellington $10K. Despite her Top seed status, she lost to surprising czech teenage ranking n1089. The week after, she was competing $25K Sydney challenger reaching the 2nd round falling to 5th seed/n257 Junri Namigata in 3 sets. Last week, she lost to Francesca Lubiani (n410) in the 1rst round.

Irena hasn't been plying since the Open Gaz de France but got points from Belfort $25K 2nd round where she beat n211 Magda Mihalache before loosing to eventual winner n206 Kristina Barrois. That 2nd round allows her to reach her best ranking in february 2006 at n450

Korina PERKOVIC: +41 (from n518 to n477)-ranking record n472 (february 27, 2006)
Korina is back in the Top 500 after 6 weeks out. She played $25K Stokholm challenger reaching the Main Draw's 2nd round as qualifer beating qualies 6th seed n429 Tatjana Priachin before loosing to eventual winner 3rd seed/n202 Elise Tamaela.

Chrissie SEREDNI:
Ranking Evolution: -5 (from n603 to n608) -highest ranking n598 (February 20, 2006)
As American, Chrissie played in North American the last couple weeks with no real succes. At Saguenay $25K, she lost to unranked 15 yo canadian Alexandra Odell Michels. At St Paul $50K, she lost in the 2nd round of the qualies against 5th seed/n531 Petra Rampre. At least, in Las Vegas $75K, she fall to n530 Nicole Seitenbecher. The only good news is that Chrissie entered the Top 600 for the 1rst time in february.

Nicole THYSSEN:
Ranking Evolution: -8 (from n666 to n674)
Nicole hasn't played yet in 2006. No news.

Marion BARTOLI: +2 (from n33 to n31)
Marion played the 2 major Tier I in the United States: Indian Wells and Miami. At Indian Wells, Marion didn't take her chance to reach the 3rs round loosing against n77 Maret Ani who upsetted out of form Nathalie Dechy in the 2nd round. After a tight 1rst set that Marion lost in the tie break, she gave up a little bit in the 2nd loosing 6/2.
Her Miami's draw was much more stronger. In the 3rd round, she faced Top World compatriot Amelie Mauresmo. After a good 1rst set where Marion scored 4 games, Amelie levelled up and won the 6/0 the 2nd set.

Shuai PENG: +4 (from n62 to n58)
Good news, Shuai is back to competition after facing her authority problem with the chinese federation. That return wasn't as easy as expected with a 1rst round loss at Indian Wells against french hard hitter n84 Stephanie Foretz. Her game started to organize at Miami where she beat veteran but still skilled n51 Amy Frazier before falling to 15 seed/n17 Elena Likhovtseva. Shuai could be a little bit desapointed to loose against Elena because she really had opportunities to win that match. However, she's on the the good way and I hope that she'll not loose that kind of match very soon..

Aiko NAKAMURA: +5 (from n66 to n61)
Up and down for Aiko this month. A very good run in Indian Wells reaching the 3rd round upsetting 25th seed/n40 Mara Santangelo before a stinging loss vs 1rst seed/n3 Justine Henin Hardenne (6/0 6/0). I really hope that it didn't affect her psychologicaly...considering that she lost in the Miami 1rst round against qualifer n92 Anastasiya Yakimova.

Maria SANCHEZ LORENZO:-4 (from n61 to n65)
Maria is playing better this year thas last...At Indian Wells she lost against erratic n96 Mashona Wahington who could be better ranked if she was more stable in her game. At Miami she repaired that desapointing loss upsetting n38 Roberta Vinci in 3 sets before falling to 5th seed/n7 Nadia Petrova.

Akiko MORIGAMI: -7 (from n64 to n71)
What's going on with Akiko...she was Top 50 less than 2 months ago! She continues to slump in the world ranking. She has been scoring terrible stats since the beginning of the year with a Win/Loss record at 0/5.
At Indian Wells she lost to qualifer n111 Meng Yuan and at Miami against n60 Na Li. Meng Yuan is a upcoming talent from China but Akiko should have handle that kind of match.

Zi YAN: -3 (from n74 to n77)
Zi seems to struggle a little bit with her game...Of course, wit hher new ranking status, she's competing in high level tournements where she has to face dangerous opponents. At Indian Wells, she lost in the early round to resurgent n78 Ashley Arkleroad and at Miami she fought hard against rising netherlands stars Michaella Krajicek (n56)

Aranxta PARRA SATONJA : -9 (from n105 to n114)
Aranxta is growing more and more distant from the Top 100, she needs to react. She tried to stem her slumping in the World Ranking mixing up WTA and ITF tournements...but unsuccesfully right now.

Maria SANCHEZ LORENZO:-1 (from n°65 to n°66)

I always thought Yan,Zi was a Selesian (two hands on both sides), but the photos from this week's Watsons Water Champions Challenge (Hong Kong) show her hitting one-handed forehands, and www.wtatour.com (http://www.wtatour.com) currently describes her playing-style as "Right-handed (two-handed backhand)" - so perhaps she is a lapsed Selesian?

I would also question whether Astrid Besser continues to use a two-handed forehand.
