I don't know why, but this comment from her interview had me rolling.

Q. Do you think it's easier to make a comeback on the women's side than it is on the men's side?
KIM CLIJSTERS: I'm not a man, so I have no idea.

Kim's getting more to-the-point with the journalists and I must admit, I really like that new behaviour ;) It's so obvious she's no friends with journalists

Q. In approximately four weeks, there's going to be a Fed Cup match between the United States and Belgium, which Serena Williams and Lindsay Davenport are going to play four Belgian women who are not ranked very high.

KIM CLIJSTERS: Yes.

Q. You never know what's going to happen in a Fed Cup match, but in all likelihood it could be a great embarrassment for the country. Why have you chosen not to play?

KIM CLIJSTERS: I don't know if you know, but I was injured for a year

Ahh... top stuff. It's always fantastic to hear a player make smart ass comments to reporters.

I wouldn't say Kim is any less than angelic for making these comments, I mean, who would be able to take the crap that a lot of players get from them?

Seriously! Those stupid reporters are always trying to make the players feel bad about themselves. I love it when the girls call them on it.

I think Kim was frantically trying to get away from this less than riveting press conference for some long awaited and well deserved rumpy pumpy with that luscious chunk of hunk commonly known as "Luc", who allegedly arrived in Miami from Belgium yesterday ................ and maybe she thought that, as sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, it would shut them all up. ;)

Kim comes across as being very selfish IMO, and you can read the irritation in her comments. Thich suggests she knows she should really play the Fed Cup, because that's what a good sport would do, especially if the Team is facing a really hard challenge.

Not sure there's a need for Kim to come across quite so selfish and snotty-nosed.

She was asked "Do you think".

Even half the posters here including the trolls have a better answer than that.
Guess she just ran out of "you knows".

the most of the journalists ask stupid questions.
I have an interview on my computer with Daniela in Rome , and the only thing he asked where questions about Golf. Nothing about her match.

This was not her entire answer to that question. Her complete answer might be called selfish in that she is putting herself and her health first, but the tone you can hardly call snotty...
"I don't know if you know, but I was injured for a year so, you know, I think I have to, you know, set my, you know*?? I'm not going to be able to play as many tournaments as I did, you know, in 2003 where I did play my Fed Cup matches. And even last year, when I got injured, I still tried to, you know, to keep the Belgian*?? the country in the World Group.

But, you know, I just have to put my, you know, myself first at the moment. And, you know, my wrist, there's still, you know, it's not the strongest part of my body and I have to look after that. I know that playing, especially the traveling, is not easy for my body now."

I wouldn't say Kim is being selfish in not playing the Fed Cup, in fact I'd say she is being smart. For arguably the first time in her career she is putting herself first. She put a lot on the line to play Fed Cup last year and it back fired, she also played in 2002 against Australia with her shoulder injury. Kim's wrist is still a problem and she is being smart to go home and prepare solidly for the clay season and progressively build up her clay game, if she were to put the Fed Cup in there straight before she begins her clay season would be stupid. You could argue she could play Fed Cup over Warsaw, but I don't see the logic in that either, that would only give her one week to prepare for berlin by whacking the Fed Cup on a hardcourt in the middle of her clay season preparation. To my knowledge Kim hasn't said no to the Fed Cup for the whole year just this tie. Belgium will more than likely be playing a quallifying tie later in the year and if it fits her schedule then I wouldn't be surprised to see Kim play. JHH is also smart not to play the Fed Cup in this tie.

Fantastic
Mar 27th, 2005, 01:36 PM
Kim didn't really answer the Fed Cup question. She assumes that the journalists know what she's going through and can just read her mind. Agreed, she was being a smartass.

Am I right in guessing that Kim is only playing 14 tournaments this year? Nine Tier 1 tournaments, the one Tier 2 in Antwerp, three Grand Slams and possibly the YEC? I assume she might swap the Tier 1 in Moscow for the Tier 2 in Luxembourg or the Tier 3 in Hasselt. This looks like a good schedule. Andre Agassi plays a similar schedule on the ATP Tour.

She's also signed up for Tier II Warsaw. I'd bet Kim plays either Stanford or LA, and definitely Filderstadt. Perhaps she'll play a grass warm-up like Rosmalen also. She won't play Charleston or Moscow, so only 7 Tier Is.

So total this year will be 3 gs, 4 tier II, 7 tier I, 1-2 Tier III and possible YEC

Classic Kim :rocker2: I've missed her.
Great answer to a stupid question from that journalist.
And it's a smart thing to sit out the upcoming tie.
Kim played for her country in Fed Cup last year even when her wrist was less than 100% and it strained her wrist even more. She needs to think long-term. In the long-run it's in Belgium's best interest to have all their players healthy. And that journalist should get off his high horse. Kim's represented Belgium many times before and is coming off a wrist injury when her ranking plummeted to 130+ in the world so obviously she needs to play more tournaments.
